I have that carpet you’re referring to. It’s a stock option in the Laredo’s. It goes all the way up over the hook bracket for the door. The same bolts that hold that bracket hold the carpet in place neatly.
So if I have those knobs & vents I have air conditioning!? I've been wondering what the hell those do for the last 7 years!!! I have a 1991 YJ Islander manual trans.
Thanks for this video, just bought a 95 YJ manual with AC, and I am so happy about it. The only thing I am gonna do is to install Herculiner, no carpet for me.
AC was a dealer installed option on all YJs. Just like soft tops were on CJs... It was also a very expensive option at the time. That is why everything on the inside looks like it was just bolted on... it's because it was.
When the top lever is in the VENT position, it opens the airbox on the passenger side, which permits air to flow into the cab. That is a vent. The YJ, if equipped with full metal doors also has wing vents, which work well.
I love my fellow Jeep owners! Everything in this video from pointing with toes, to the patriotic drama movie music, AC not working currently etc lol #JeepLife
Own a 92 YJ. Based on what you showed me, I think I have AC! Who knew? Not like I ever drive it with the top on :) Also, the song in the background, played that in college in the wind ensemble. American Salute I believe. Great music!
Thanks for the video. I have a YJ without AC. I was considering buying another YJ with AC or installing an AC unit. How well does the heater/cold air work? Is it as good as other models like the TJ?
Hello, to help stop the heat coming through the floor, I bought a few cork dinner mats and put them under the carpet in the cab. It helped a lot which is good as I live in the Middle East and our summers get up to 55c, so it's a little toasty.
I have a 92 with AC and it quit blowing cold air at the end of last summer. I knew based on a quick diagnostic that I'd need a new compressor clutch, which now they only sale the compressor and clutch together now. I didnt replace due to weather cooling off here in Charleston, but now its heating back up and i need AC. But, now the AC isnt even turning on. Do you happen to know where the fuse would be for the AC unit or is it common for the entire unit to quit working?
What did for the side covers was use cardboard to cut out a stencil then drew it out on this aluminum. Cut it out using jig saw which cuts it like butter. Self drillers to install it. Painted to match of course. Cost me under 20 for the aluminum. Hope that helps ya if ya havnt covered those spots yet
Hey man I have a 91 Yj . Do you have any idea what the screws are that bold that gage cluster in are ? I’ve stripped a couple and need to replace them. You had a good shot of them when you were filming the underside of the 4 gauge cluster. Thx . Aaron
How do I stop air coming thru the top of the dash, I guess the defrost air? My switch is on off but air still comes out from the top of the dash. Thanks.
Can you show where does the red wired from the radio ends up? I just bought one 95 YJ and the red wire from the radio is just hanging under the dash so i can't powet on the radio thanks hope you can help! Jeep on!
I have a 95 Wrangler with an automatic transmission; is it normal for the shift light (I think that is what the arrow is) to come on while driving? I thought that was only for manual transmissions.
Hey I was hoping you could help me out a bit. I have a 94 yj and as of right now it will not go into vent or off so heat is running at all times and it is also blowing in outside air inside the cab all the time. So i have heat and practicly vent on at all times. And it sucks. Alot... would you have any suggestions on what it could be?
No I've been having a problem with my YJ when I switch the air tow event it shuts off and when I turn it off it's on any solutions and how I could try to fix this
could you show us where the A/C drains water? I had a mechanic drill a hole into the floor metal above the bell housing and he stuck a hose through there and told me that's what had to be done.
Just got a 94 YJ auto 4x4 from a dealer here in Arizona. Mine has the same exact setup. Didn't even see the knobs because they are missing. It's just the stubs.
I have a YJ 93 with plenty of these add ons. Previous and most likely original owners sure seem to have been very invested in their jeep. My AC stopped working last week. I took it to a pal and he says there isn’t a problem with AC but rather an electrical problem in the dash. He thinks that behind the rotating knobs they’re might be a wiring problem because it won’t transmit the electrical current to the AC compressor. Rather there is no spinning at the compressor. It’s not being powered. I’m actually thinking about personally unscrewing the panel where the two knobs are but I could also wait and take it tomorrow morning to the vehicle electrician. Question: I typically would turn off the AC fan knob to off and rotate the cooler knob to off as well. All this before turning off the jeep. But here in Texas it was hot at times I didn’t bother to. Is that okay or recommended??? This AC obviously is 30years old by now (Maybe some parts have been replaced over the years) but yeah overall, I fear that was the issue as to why it’s not working now. I remember turning the jeep on and hearing the AC kick in, blowing air into the cabin but suddenly stop after like 10 seconds. Now the knobs and the lever switch aren’t getting the AC vents to work. Only the defrost+top vents will work.
Hi i drive a 95 YJ and absolutley love it!!! It has 205575 miles on original engine. Its a 2.5L 5spd man (2nd one as 3rd gear went) and its equiped with a/c. So on a drive out to Fargo i found out i wasnt pushing any heat even though temp was hot. Worried i was out of colant i pulled over & chked. Nope all good.next i put up a post at TCJC and found out theres a switch - near the vent under dash on passenger side thatcan bring in cold air or hot- somehow that switch got pushed to cold. After change of direction cabe gothot. Yipee
Was looking for a video to show how to change my speakers in my '91 YJ and came across this. Informative! Thanks. I will keep looking for the speaker video...
Would love it if someone would show the actual place to drill holes on fire wall where hoses from evaporator go through. I liked the way you explained things
I need help with my radio i installed it before it worked alot time now it wont turn on i check the wired its ok i checked the fuzr behind the wire but its weird i look at fuze box and i see rwdio dont have a fuze it dont use the sqare obe?
i installed a pioneer mvh x380 for my friends jeep thats exactly like yours. i connected every wire properly. followed the instructions in the manual. and its not turning on
you mentioned getting a hood scoop for the hood vent to get more air. would that be for the heat or for the vent? I am hoping it would make the vent a bit more powerful. I have a '94 YJ with AC (which isn't ver powerful but then again...i don't use a top)
First thing I did when I got my yj was to take all the carpets out... and pulled the drain plugs.... Since jeeps are noted for leaking I prevent the floor from rusting out... while looking for a jeep they all looked good till I removed the carpets from the front.
Great and helpful video. Quick Question: As I slide my selector from "Off" to "Defrost" the fan blower comes on, and stays on as I slide further to the right to "Heat". When I continue to the right to "Vent", the physical vent opens in the passenger floorboard like you showed....but the blower/fan turns off. (It comes right back on when I slide it back to "heat".) Is this how it's supposed to work??
cool video do you have any info on testing for the heater motor mines won't turn on at all its winter time I literally have to drive with foggy windows til I start to get hot air blowing in thru the hood vent lol BTW I have a 92 yj 5 speed with ac as well
I had an 87 Wrangler Laredo package, mine had an additional gauge, I believe it was a clock where your 4wd indicator is. My indicator was in the center of the dash with the turn signals and all. Anyway quick question, my Jeep had the same AC but it never worked. Can you tell me how well the AC worked when it was functioning? I am considering another YJ or maybe a TJ but AC is a must have option.
I'm not reading the comments to see if someone else said it, but if you remove the center dash cover ( 6 screws ), then remove the 4 screws holding the air control unit and SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY slide it out (the cams, cable holders, cable end holders and other rotational bits can be brittle by this age), you'll see where the cables mount. Follow the cables back and you will find an adjuster. Turn it to elongate the outer cable sheath and shorten the cables a little, then try the slider. You'll notice you don't need to force the slider left or right as hard to open/close the vent or turn the whole system on/off.
Unfortunately, explaining what to do in the video is kind of odd, but I know you know what I meant when I said, force the slider all the way over even if you slide it over do you need to kind of feel for the lever/cabling behind the dash to actually move the vent open but yes, you are correct. It’s just one of those little things that unless you’re there in person sometimes people will never get it. I meant wrangler owners who have been moving that lever all their lives only to find out that it did nothing because they weren’t pushing it that extra quarter of an inch at the end lol.
Funny enough, i'm back watching this video again. I'm deleting the whole control box and radio, removing the center trim, overlaying a new shallower trim, cutting out area for double-din, and installing a touchscreen under the gauge set. With the room i have left on the left sude of the screen, i'll have a hi/off/lo switch with 3 push/pull cables attached to temp/vent/floor&windshield flaps. Gonna be interesting, but i can always put it stock again.
I have a 2988 YJ and the vent under the glove box is crammed full of leaves. How do I remove it to clean it out. The A/C stuff was all already removed when I got it. Thanks.
Lol must be nice living in the future. Lol if anything just try and pick all the leaves out but that little vent on the bottom right needs to open all the way about a half an inch to inch if I remember correctly
Yes i have 94 wrangler , in Puerto Rico , the ac seems to be aftermarket , and notjing works , dreading taking dash apart but redoing alot , will lower my windshield so i can access speakers easier
I wish I could try it. He sold his 89 YJ this spring. I'll always remember that thing tho, it helped me learn a lot about cars. Which is why two weeks ago I purchased a 1993 YJ. :-) There is a video on my channel if you want to check it out.
Recently I clean the blower motor(rat smell coming out) and now my my air system is not operating, besides a blown fuse, what else could be an issue that would keep it from working?
Great video, bsgtrekfan88! I've got a '93 YJ and you're right -- it took me few weeks to figure out where the heck the air was coming from when I opened the vent. Not the easiest dash to understand considering how simple it looks. Anyway, I've got a blown front speaker and the tape deck needs an upgrade. Crutchfield told me this was a tough job. Your thoughts and what do you recommend? How do I do this?
Those should be 4x6 speakers in the dash. Also, what are those home speakers? Did you check the ohms on them before hooking them to your amp or deck? Just a heads up. Not all speakers are created equally. Especially home and car. Most car audio is 4 ohm. Those could be anywhere from 2 to 16 ohms.
One thing with your 4 wheel drive like stay and on check your vacuum actuator to make sure it's actually disengaging those vacuum actuators are known for going bad If that's not it the switch that's coming out of that piece probably went mad in is sticking Compressed
I second this. My indicator would flash between 4wd and 2wd. Found out after about a year the vaccuum actuator completely rusted through and it was in fact switching on and off a little but couldn't tell when stopped.
Is there any way of getting heat to come out of the 5 vents or only cold air. Great video. I didn't know about the defrost setting until I watched you video. Getting heat out of the 5 vents would make the cab nice and warm in the winter.
I am not a jeep wizard(yet) but in most other cars, that yellow light is a shift indicator light. Assuming your jeep is manual, I would say that it is lighting when it thinks its time for you to shift.
anonymous guy I found some guy on the Internet who makes dashes for YJs that mimic the look of the CJ dash. Flat, metal, clean. No plastic. It wasnt expensive, either. I will try and find his information and post it here. You can also email me at chrisnelso@gmail.com and I will send you pics, too.
Hi! We just put in a new air compressor. There is a part that we have no idea what it’s for. It has a couple valves and a copper wire with a coil on the end of it. Any ideas?
I have an 88 yj and the cables to the vents are not connected it seems that the connectors or clips are broken/missing does anyone know where I can purchase some to replace and repair my ac/vent system
However it "squeaks" and in any position except for vent in which just like before, all the way to the right and hold, it won't squeak. Does yours or have you heard of anyone's doing this?
I have wanted the Jeep yj since they came out and finally here it iam 41 and finally own one. I love my little “yeti “ and will always find an opportunity to work on her.
if your 4 wheel drive light is still on try taking off where the sensor is on the t-casr and clean it out. mine did the same thing but the sensor way just dirty
I have a friend with a 90 Wrangler who is having an issue with his climate control. One of the pins broke off where the cable connects to that controls it, back behind the unit. Not sure how said plastic cream colored pin can be fixed or removed. Can anyone help?
It goes through a heater core, not just air from the engine. Their is an actuater after the vent that diverts air through the heater or past. My 95 looks alot like yours, spice interior and emerald green exterior but it doesn't have the air conditioning like yours.
I don't know anything about 87's but I own a 92 and all you have to do is remove the center dash panel. 6 screws hold on dash. 2 screws hold in the radio after you remove the dash. Super easy
Looking for someone who manufactures a bar that would attach to the existing screws to install a bar (slightly above and all the way across the top of the dash) to install ram mount "arms" for phone, inreach, gps, tablet, etc. on a 1989 YJ Wrangler.
You have to take the hole dashboard apart to get to it, but the cable you could grab if you take your radio out and feel around with your hand open free just take your other hand and move the lever until you feel some tension, that's how I found my problem in the slack it had on it
if I was you I would consider seriously taking the dash apart so you know for sure no bolts or anything holding anything on back there breaks, several things broke on mine...
