I'm amazed at her determination. They should make a wheelchair with a pneumatically lowered and raised seat. Push a button to deflate and lower the seat, slide backward into the chair, then either a battery or hand pump to raise the seat to a lockable normal position. => No more failed transfers
@philburch1970
@philburch1970 4 года назад
With a hand pump backup to a lithium battery powered raise, it would be foolproof even if the battery died. (Though it would require enough arm strength to pump the handle.) Honestly though, why isn't there something like that already on the market??? I can't be the first person to think of something like that.

Types of things like this transferring from place to place to the wheelchair from the bathroom tub. It takes time every body has their own technique. You’ll see in time you’ll gain strength and prefect your techniques. Personally I don’t like to do things that are not necessary. As long as you can transfer from the bed to the couch to the car to the bathroom those are the important and necessary things. You do a lot of things that other people who are disabled can not do. Getting up off the floor in my opinion is not necessary. You still win. Because you are able to get off your wheelchair onto the floor and back onto the couch. That’s a big accomplishment. I don’t remember how long it took me to do that but you’re doing great.

Some times you have to be the stronger person and ask for help. It’s hard living with a disability it’s hard being in the wheelchair every day. I know but you just have to be brave and ask for help. You don’t want to hurt yourself or cause further injury to your limbs. Based on my experience if you really want to transfer yourself like that I suggest you work on your upper body strength. Swimming is the best quick results with minimal effort. Just focus on upper body strength. Always have supervision there’s high risk of drowning because you can’t move your legs. Take vitamins. Pray to God to meet your need. He knows how you feel he knows where you’re at. Keep up the good work you’re doing. You’re doing good.

You're so pretty! Keep trying, don't give up! I'm a T6, been paralyzed for 30 years now. Used to be able to get off the floor into my wheelchair but it was so hard! Once you miss a couple times your arms are so tired it's hard to get that strength back to try again. About 15 years ago I got a blood disorder, my blood counts are really low. So they put me in the hospital and said it was my diet. So they had me lay in bed in the hospital for 5 months on a 3000 plus calorie a day diet. Then they sent me home and 3 months later I went back in the hospital and they did the same thing, then again! After two and a half almost three years I went from 120 lb is almost 200 lbs. They tried doing it again and I just said no find a different way because the diet thing isn't working. They did every test they could think of and send it to the Mayo Clinic and they couldn't find anything wrong either. So they never have figured out why my blood counts are so low. I spent the next couple years trying to lose the weight and build my arms back up. But in 2009 I got a bad blood infection again. I was in the hospital for 9 months and almost died a couple times. The bad thing is they didn't do range of motion on my legs when I was in the hospital at all. I lost a lot of range of motion in my legs because of that, they're really stiff now. I also lost most of the strength in my arms and I still haven't been able to get all of that back. There's no way right now that I could transfer from the floor up to my chair again. Right now I'm just trying to lose the weight without crashing my blood counts and not get another blood infection, and build my arm strength up again. So good luck with your struggles on getting into the chair and I hope things work out for you! Darin

But I am able to go from the floor to my wheelchair just like you are doing it. If you can transfer yourself from a bed to the chair, or from the chair to the toilet or bathtub side, then you can do this, too. I am not trying to be arrogant. Good luck.

Hello there. I'm a C8 T1 I could never do it that way I learned to get from the floor to the chair by facing the wheelchair then pulling myself up like I'm kneeling in front of the wheelchair then lifting my upper body by doing essentially the same thing you're doing but front ward towards the chair then when my waist was high enough I would twist with my shoulders which would twist my lower body enough to get my butt on the corner of the wheelchair. I could never do it the way you're trying but was taught both ways. Like you I could never get the height the way you're doing it. I've been in the chair since 1991. I've gained weight since then so floor lifts are a thing of the past for me. But keep trying and find what works for you. I've gone skydiving, whitewater rafting, got my masters degree, played wheelchair basketball and am still employed full time at the age of 58. There's bumps in the road but keep trying and think outside the box. I can see your determination and that will get you to do whatever you can and then some.
@SandraHwheelchair

Hello there! Thank you for your message! I try several times also the way you said facing the wheelchair but it doesn't work for me because my legs get spasms when I'm trying to lift up my body and keeps me from getting to the pillow. You're doing a good job working so hard at your age!

Amazing determination! It is one of my goals eventually to do floor to chair transfers. I’m wondering about putting a couple blocks in front of your foot plate and lifting yourself off of the floor onto the block Then from those grabbing the front bars from your chair to transfer onto the seat. I usually use those to transfer from my bed to the chair it prevents my feet to drop on the floor and give my legs a bit of a lift. Definitely is a huge help! Also a game changer to transfer to my commode. Best of luck keep on sending it and trying💪🏻❤️

A small lift under you operated with your L arm - like a modern scissors type car jack where you turn the handle in circles. In fact, a car jack somewhat modified would work. Need bigger base for stability and operated upside down so that the turn handle rises as you rise and stays within reach and easiest turning.

Hi... Get a pillow from your bed. When you're on the floor. Remove your seat cushion from chair, so you won't have far to go when lifting yourself up! Place your bed pillow on your foot rest. This should give you height. Lift your bottom up onto the foot rest and up to your chair. Transfer to the couch to put your seat cushion back on your chair. Hopefully this helps. Good luck👍🏼

Floor to chair and pulling up your pants are so difficult! The hospital made me do floor to chair before they would discharge me. been in a chair since 2000 and floor to chair is so hard but such a great feeling when you do it without help. Makes you feel so independent.

you are so right. Where I did rehabilitation they focused on other things and sadly didn't practice the floor chair transfer.

Hey Sandra. Have you mastered the floor to chair transfer since you posted this video? I was experimenting with it after watching your video. If you tilt to one side and put your elbow on the seat, then simultaneously push your body toward your elbow on the seat side with your opposite hand while pushing your body up with your elbow you can quickly bring your other elbow up onto the seat. Once you have both elbows on the seat it's a cinch to push yourself up into the chair. I actually did this from the floor to my bed which is higher than your chair with my legs straight out in front of me not using them at all.

Hi there! Thank you for your message! No, I didn't master yet the transfer. I still need to find my way of doing it. I tried on a side as you explained but didn't work for me. But perhaps after I'm getting stronger it will be possible. I will make a video if it works the way you say

You’re a good girl you’re a strong girl. I speak from experience. I live what I’m talking about. What I’m talking about is life in a wheelchair..

what's your injury?

SandraH I was born with a disability. First I use crutches then I went a manual wheel chair. Currently a motorized wheelchair. I speak from personal experience. You need a lot of upper body strength to lift your self. One way that my body became strong rapidly was 1. Prayer 2.Swimming. You really don’t need to learn to get up off the floor. It’s my opinion that it’s optional. You want to save your strength and prevent injury to your arms and legs. You do not have to prove anything to any body. Start small goals, learn how to do laundry. Learn how to make toast independently. Go to school educate yourself. Then eventually learn how to drive. You’re doing really good. You’ve come a long way I can see. Be happy with the things you’ve already accomplished. Getting up off the floor is no big deal. Staying healthy physically and mentally is what’s important. Having meaning full and loving relationships is what really matters. People in your life who except you as you are.

I totally understand. I'm aka left amputee and fell broke my left shoulder. Guess these struggles makes us stronger in the long run. Just keep up the upper core and arm exercises and eventually you'll get that extra little push of strength to pick up lower trunk off the floor. The couch just seems a straighter shot up the front. The wheelchair looks like you can't lift straight up from the floor by the leg rests... make you push further out.. Keep up the good work❤
