When you let off the throttle you Can hear it getting to much Air, you want it to throttle Down faster. 2-stroke is a sensitive mistress 😚😁

That happened to me on a dirt bike wide open on a dirt road in the dark. Luckily my back tire was bald so I had a long smooth drag when it locked up

Just rebuild it. Send out the cylinder to get re-done, get it ported and add a better carb. And make sure to re-jet it correctly

High idle is always lean on a 2 stroke. Don't keep cranking the screw to bring the idle down. Idle should drop on a 2 stroke as it gets temp if it doesn't you have a problem

@@dirtbikesrawseome bad seals suck outside air into the crank case and make the mixture lean. Same cause the carb just isn't to blame in that case

I was told by the performance shop a few miles away from me to turn your screw all the way in then 1 1/4 turns and then fine tune from there.always went with that and never failed me yet.

That fuel line next to the exhaust Could have caused vapor locked during the high revs. Big bores aren't super high revving engines you gotta treat them kind of like a diesel and use the torque. Sorry it went south Joe hopefully she's worth rebuilding it'd be a perfect opportunity for a forged big bore kit.

Truly if he knew what he was doing all this would go easier lol ...Never adjust idle by throttle cable and never rev the PEE ( like the RM 125) out of a fresh built motor for the first few hours lol

Looked to me it was running really lean. And having it pegged for 10mins straight running lean is disastrous. Interesting to see the melted piston and probably from the front side. You'll fix it Joe

Don’t think it has a melted piston. Only hurt on the side’s. Ran to hot and the piston expanded. It happened to me 4 times before I put on a bigger carburetor. I think the gas 🚰 dohicki is broke.

The oof factor was high....literally you said i turned idle down and its still idling high....duh its so lean. Those zilla motors need alot of fuel and oil to prevent meltdown. If you gonna have vintage 2 strokes you better develop an ear for tuning. This video showed how lean this was from start to finished....

Lean and over heating go hand in hand. If it was running lean it got hot and if it got hot it was running lean. Id bet your piston melted on the exhaust side, hope you get this beast fixed and running properly it looks like a hell of a machine brother

You can hear it running super lean when you come to a stop and the idle is super high. The gas line on the exhaust doesn't help either. Sometimes I wonder why you try to pin it thru the gears cause that's when things go boom most of time. Good luck on the rebuild tho

@@custommadeknives holding anything you rebuilt in 5th or 6th gear pinned down the road for extended periods of time is NOT how you should ride it. Not until you know the bike/atv is running perfect. This is what happens when it's not.

I also want to add the fact that if he was doing this on a dirtbike he most likely would be in the hospital. Top speed runs on the road are cool until something goes wrong and then it's bad news. Thankfully Joe had 4 wheels and wet pavement under him

Yea, if he was on a bike and it locked up like that at those speeds, you better pray it slides like this cuz they normally hit the ground first then slide you all over the pavement be careful on project's testing at super high speeds! Safety is #1 ALWAYS and lookin cool is second😎😂

Nice. I got my 85 CR500 on a partial trade for my 92 quadracer250. 1st time out, the lower con rod bearing exploded and took my rings out destroying the sleeve. Sat for a year but after a new bottom end and piston and sleeve, it was the widow maker it was born to be. Rebuild and keep that bad boy. God bless

If that fuel line was hitting exhaust it would of vapor locked fuel. That would of made it run really lean and blew it up.

I have an 89 cr500 that I just use on track so it is up and down gearbox just using the bottom end grunt. It still has same piston kit in from 10 years ago and I guess it’s done 100 track sessions. Never had a problem. On the other hand a friend uses his Cr 500 on the road as a supermoto and has to rebuild it quite often as he uses the top end all the time for long periods. They not designed for this. Best of luck with the rebuild👍

I'm an ltz 400 guy, all 4 strokes for low maintenance. Riding 2 strokes is fun, they beg to go fast. I love em, I just don't want to do rebuilds every year- so I do 4 strokes only. Besides that fact, I get new dirt bikes sometimes and I am SUPER CAREFUL for DOUBLE the break-in. I am a firm believer in 2 tanks of babying before BRAAAAAAPing..... Sorry this happened to ya and I wish you the best. Thanks for posting, I learned a lesson as well. Good luck- badass toys need LOTS of maintenance.

Im a new viewer that has had about 40 bikes. 2 , 3 and 4 wheelers. Street , dirt sport and cruisers. I had a 1986 trx250r out at glamis one time ripping up a worm course and over reved a bit i guess because while the buds and i were heading to a place to have a couple beers my ride died. Fuel check 👍 spark check 👎 the gap had closed and it was easy to start once i got my gap back 😄. Back on our way to the beers it died again , gapped it again and off we went. When i got home i torn the topend down and saw i had tore up the worm course and lost my top piston ring , it ran ok with one but i redid it all and shaved the cylinder head for a touch more compression. Im enjoying the videos thanks for posting. Miss working on all my toys.

Way back in the day I had a hopped up Banshee with 100+ hp that was SO FUN ! 3rd gear wheelies and sick trench digging on dirt. Now I miss it. But like with this one he has here sometimes shit just happens beyond our control .

Get an AFR (air fuel ratio) guage. AEM makes them = helps with tuning and noticing air leaks better = many younger people did not grow up with 2-strokes and don't know how to tune them. Also check the diameter of the cylinder and piston = sometimes a cylinder will go "oval" especially after being resleeved = cold seizures when piston heats up (round piston expanding in an oval cylinder).

I’d say if he wants to do this for a living he needs to be able to atleast diagnose that this machine wasn’t running correctly from the start. super lean hanging idle/and some pre detonation.

Your idle speed is way high and idle mixture is lean as well. This can be a contributing factor in melting a piston in a 2-stroke engine. Big bore 2-strokes also do NOT like being run at part(lean)throttle and high RPM's, because metal mites will appear and lunch the piston. I'd say you holed/seized a piston myself.

Mate 2 strokes aren’t designed to be pinned wide open like 4 strokes, when you do too speed runs you gotta let on and off the throttle also you should be shifting a lot quicker through the gears once again it’s not a 4 stroke no reason to max out every gear

you couldn't be more wrong. if you don't rev out 2 strokes they foul and stop running you can't just putt putt them around you have to man line them lol, oil will build up in the expansion chamber also if you putt until they drown out lol they love revving out so much they are a prime engine for boats, high rpm for hours no problem. chance is based on the age of the engine his problem was the rings were starting to wear out making it run lean,which is normal on a 2 stroke, as they wear out you have to always jet it larger every so often and if it wasn't re jetted for the higher octane it was just running even more lean because higher octane doesn't mean more power it means a longer time to detonate therefore you need more fuel because less of it burns.

Get some FLEXX handlebars to elimenate most of bar vibration. Had them on my trx450r as well as my older 250r/ cr500 conversion. These giant piston 2 strokes need those bars. If the tires have wheel slime in them. They will wobble badly on roads

All Joe has to do to get this Banshee to run is give it 2mm more piston squish. If not putting 10 more lbs of head bolt torque might cause it to hold. It needs no head gasket material, but super clean brake cleaner faces and crocus cloth glass sheet smoothing to the surfaces with only 175 grit paper, not making it too slick.

You said a hose was pinched. If that was connected to the overflowdrain that would mean that it's not getting gas. There needs to be air in the float that can push the fuel upp the carburetor to where the vaccum is. If the overflow hose is pinched no air will be able to come to the floatarea resulting in low or no fuel coming to the engine.

Don’t feel bad joe, that quad sounded a lil bit lean as if it had been riden by a mad man, it’s probably a valve or seal, when my bike blew up like that it did the same skidding for around 20 feet, and it turns out it was the engine cap that goes underneath the head gasket

once its taken apart i bet its a hole in the piston from running lean, rebuild it with a bigbore and you could get your money back

Check the vent tube on the gas top it might have airlock and stopped the gas from going to the carburetor and it leaned out. Or you did a improper break in. With a brand new top end you supposed to run it up to temperature then let it cool take it easy with it and then repeat the cycle a couple times. You can't get out blasting down the street with a brand new engine wide open. We always run Throttle needle clip in middle.

Joe, i had a zilla too running lean at idle too, take the flywheel cover off to see if you can wiggle the flywheel up and down, if you can wiggle the flywheel up and down, the crank bearings and crankcase need attention, causing it to run lean and leak past the crankseal, it is very common problem on the 500s zillas, they make case inserts to fix it, that is what i had to do on mine...

Suzuki motors are beasts. Great quad, my 686 is that way and for a Yamaha, it's scary, tons of torque, speed etc. Noisy too.

He has no clutch control when he takes off, just dumps the clutch like a 5 year old, still doesn't know how to shift gears, and revs the piss out of 500 two stroke on the road, any wonder he blew it up man 😂

So it's a misconception that running a Ritch mixture of our is safer. You can just as easily burn up a engine that way. Especially with high compression engines. You need a happy medium. And maybe you were not on reserve and ran out of gas that way.

More oil in your oil/fuel ratio makes your fuel/air ratio leaner. I always cringe when guys say “I run more oil during break in” when in reality they only made it leaner. Just mix at 32:1 or 40:1 jet accordingly and stick with it

The coolant ? Did you check , the pilot jet mite be half closed up or water in float bowl causing lean mix on main high end. That's why it started hard if not going riding turn gas off drain float bowl so two stroke mix doesn't thicken in float while stored or more than 3 days.

Allow me to play the devis's advocate here. Boy, your parents neighbors must love you. One of them just placed a curse on you. All that noise right in the middle of Jeopardy, lord luve a duck. Well at least it happened right close to your truck. Look at it this way, it's like going to the fair, you pay your money and get a quick thrill and on to the next ride. I blew up a race mower today just like this. Didn’t go crazy just lost compression 😂 sucks bc I can’t really rebuild it either it’s a old cheap motor but there cheap so not really a big deal but still sucks. Spending money you shouldn’t have to always sucks. Can’t wait for the rebuild video 😂

This reminds me of christmas day when i was 9 and i got my malaguti 50cc first dirt bike, first ride i took it on 45 minutes and it blew up, and no one knew what happened, it had perfectly mixed 40:1 fuel, and everything else was fine. I guessed it was my carburetor but there was nothing i could do, the carb was untunable like it had no mixture screws at all it blew up 3 times in total then we sold it only 2 or 3 weeks after i got it. The sadness on my face when it blew up 😂. Im 13 now and am happy now i have a ktm 450. After i sold my first bike i bought an imr 160 what was a great bike but i wanted something more powerful to ride with friends, only paid 1600 euros for a 2003 ktm 450 exc from my neighbours son who doesn't even live here and barely used the bike but since he knew my dad coz it used to be his he decided to sell it for me for cheap.

Same thing happened with the first purpose built MX bike I ever raced; everything was going great, the bike was performing sweet, and wham! locked up solid. It happens.

OK, first, let's figure out why it blew up. I've been working with and studying Quadzillas for over 15 years, so I believe I've got a pretty good understanding of them. They are easier to screw up than get correct if one isn't careful. Did the previous owner say, or have receipts from, the shop that "tuned" it? If so, did they take note of the atmospheric conditions it was tuned for? We need to compare those to the conditions you were just riding in. Take off the magneto cover. Grab the flywheel and see if it moves up and down. If it does, the main bearing bores in the engine are shot, and the person or shop who built the engine should be held responsible. Quadzillas are KNOWN for this. If someone puts a main bearing in it's bore, and the outer race can be turned, and they think that's OK, they should stop "wrenching" and start collecting stamps. It didn't just wear out since the engine was built a little while ago. It might have an air leak. You need to buy or build a 2 stroke pressure tester. Lots of info and videos about it. You'll need to pull the flywheel to examine if the MAG seal is leaking, so check above first. You can look at some of these without taking the air tight parts of the engine apart, so if you can't pressure test it now, no big deal. The crankcase halves are a matched set. If someone mixed and matched them, their base gasket surfaces, and probably, all the bearing bores won't match left to right. That means air leaks and that means burn downs. Maybe whoever built the engine didn't use a correct sealant on the case halves. Maybe gas and or oil dissolved it or weakened it. Did the previous owner say, or have receipts from, the shop who bored it? They could have done it crooked, not chamfered the ports correctly, not clearanced it to the piston correctly, etc. You have to take the engine apart to check, so leave that for later. The builder might not have checked the ring end gap. That puts undue stress on the rings and bore, and could've caused your problem. Again, leave that for later. I wonder what kind of main bearings are in there. Chinese or other low quality bearings could have failed, or were failing, and let air past the MAG seal, causing a lean out. Again, check them later after the leakdown test. The same with the MAG seal. Low quality, or possibly not lubed before crank install, or damaged during crank install, would also cause a lean out. Again, check later. Too much cut off the head would raise the compression ratio too much. What fuel and and oil, and at what ratio, where you using? Did you bleed the air out of the cylinder head when you added coolant? Can you see if the base gasket is spit out anywhere? On the sides? Under the reed? Non OEM base gaskets are known for this. Can you see if that aftermarket reed has a gasket between it and the cylinder? Also, we need to determine if the exhaust valve is set correctly, but we can do that later too. If it's not set correctly, and it's open at higher RPMs, it WILL burn down. See if the flywheel key is advanced when you pull the flywheel. There are 3 reasons it vibrates. 1. It's a 500. Even with a balancer, it's not a 125. 2. Whoever did the crank might not have trued it correctly, or at all. Did the previous owner say, or have receipts from, the shop who replaced the rod? 3. Whoever built the engine might not have the balancer timed correctly. It's not hard, just line up dots on the crank half and gears... Did you drain the trans oil yet? Hopefully it doesn't have chunks of trans gears in there.

Look for loose and broken bolts as the source of excessive vibration. Big bore two strokes are known to loosen and break fasteners.

my first assumption was it overheatedand blew a gasket or warped the head, but considering no smoke or coolant was coking from that area, ill bet it was running lean and damaged the piston. You need to get ahold of the guy that "tuned" it, and have a talk with him. see if he will take responsibility and make it right.

And some advice on shifting. Go easy on the overrev those 500 motors don’t rev as high as a banshee motor or even a 250r I would definitely check for a air leak or maybe change the jetting but please start shifting sooner before you over rev it that isn’t good on anything. But I’m looking forward to the rebuild.and also I’d about bet you have a hole melted in the piston from detonation or too hot of a plug.

Just when I thought there was hope for you, you release this video and dispell that myth. Thinking it ran out of gas when it locks up and sends you skidding down the road, is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Then after you realize it its blown up, and has no compression, you still are fixated on it not getting gas. Incase you've never ran out of gas before, the motor simply stalls. It doesn't lock up the wheels, and it doesn't cause the motor to lose compression.

make sure you check and verify the ignition timing on the pickup coil , it might have come loose , or just have been timed wrong .

So I just checked your channel. So your cool. Your into the oldies but goodies that’s respect. Your a beginning at best with engine building but gotta start somewhere so respect. Sry fer busting you so much in this vid. Love the wheeler. Hope you rebuild it. All the help you need is right here if you need just ask. Very easy job to diagnose. Richer oil to fuel ratio makes your fuel to air ratio leaner. More oil = less fuel, less fuel = leaner. If you run 40:1 and switch to 28:1 you’ll run leaner not richer. Need to change your jets according to your mixture and stick with it, don’t go changing oil ratios.

Just for future reference the higher octane you run the more two-cycle mix you need mixture rate on 2-cycle gas is based on regular when you step up the octane you must step up the oil that's the way you don't get overheat and and blow the engine

missing a bit toward top end rpms maybe adjust the air fuel a bit while riding it ? the needle on the slide may need a small adjustment or the plug got a slight splash of wet fuel.fouling it so it wont strike correctly did you ever do a warm and cold compression test on her to see what state the bore piston and rings were in ? it doesnt sound like its piston skirt slapping or pinging excessively

Don't feel bad, I bought a brand new Suzuki LT 500 in 87, only to have it dry seize first time out. When you back off the throttle while riding it's jetting is too lean, cutting off the fuel while the piston keeps moving from forward momentum, scarring the cylinder until seizure. I spent 5k. jetted too lean from the factory.

Live and learn, blew my motor in my car after 2 months, snapped my timing chain and dropped a valve...saved up for 3 years and only drove it 2 damn months...its still sitting for a year now. Putting a bigger engine in but no funds to finish it because this covid crap.
