Coturnix quail are very easy to raise and don't require a lot. But there are a few things to consider when you are planning you quail coop. Check out my Amazon shop for products I use and recommend - www.amazon.com/shop/slightlyr...
I've gone all sand before and it gets messy and muddy. Even with the sterilite, shoe box size feeders, that I totally copied from Chris, they get dust in everything. Keep your dust bath separate and cleaning will be much less a headache. Infact keep water and feed as far away from the dust as possible...lol 😆
Once ,I made sure the cover over the side with sand box was good, I've never had issue & we've had Historic rains this year. My coop is built to Chris design.
Ive watched quite a few of your videos. It amazes me that previously you can have 60 K subs, 1.2K views and 200 likes. Get with the program people, dont be lazy. This bloke puts out quality content. I'm just annoyed with myself that I've had chooks ( named pets) for 30 years when I could have bred Quail. Thumbs up this guy people for a job well done.Cheers from North Queensland ✌
Chris, love your channel and the advice you give. I am hoping to move back out into the country on a small acreage, either rented or bought. Quail are one of the animals I am planning on having for meat and income. Since I am a single person my needs to enjoy a Quail dinner isn't as big as a family, and I do live an area with a large enough Asian and gourmet foodies to have a market for birds and eggs.
something ive learned is to always have extras of everything. your right about the extra cages i keep a large clear tote around and a medium sized one just in case and i have like 2-3 extra waterers and feeders, it has saved my behind several times.
Greetings Chris, I have been using empty plastic coffee cans for both feeders and waterers. I have been experimenting with cutting the lid and using large mouthed juice or Gater Aid bottle as a water or feed hopper. Haven't got all the bugs out of that second part yet.
Due to (situational reevaluations),Ive gotten into Quail. We can't have a Rooster because of Urban regulations so sooner or later we wont have chickens because of reasons I won't go into. What an absolute beauty your channel is for this subject. Am binge watching to get it right for both us and our birds so that we both have a good relationship. Cant thank you enough for your content. Cheers from North Queensland ✌
I just watched your video on building the hutch for quail and was wondering if an electric fence could be added to deter predators. Thank you for answering my question!!
I built a similar hutch (like nearly exactly hahaha) but instead of the live wire to keep the foxes away i added another board around the bottom all the way round, and put a thicker gauge wire mesh that works perfectly. A lot cheaper too and because its "analogue" there's no failures, but yeah gives a good clearance away from the birds feet so they cant get to them and with the large gauge it lets the waste fall through easier when falling through 2 levels so you don't get much extra cleaning needed
pretty sure ya know what i mean but for any who dont. floor wire is on the bottom of cage then 4+ inch gap because of new board then the wire. adds extra strength too not that its necessary but hey over engineer and ya never have problems hahaha
@@Slightlyrednecked you know what they say mate great ideas are communal hahahaha. Plus not too late to change, would hate to see ya live wire go down and ya not notice and then come back in the morning to pirate quails haha
My feeder recommendation is a 24 hole chick feeder, the long type with a pyramid shape flip top lid. About $7 on Amazon right now. I then cut 1 inch by 1/4 inch hardware cloth to fit in the bottom. I lay that on top of the food. It prevents them from being able to dog it out with their beaks, which they still did when I made a Slightly Rednecked feeder. His feeder eorks awesome for babies though!
Hi Chris found you through living tradition homestead and the issue is how to process a bird for the table?? I know you tube has regulations but would be informative to us beginners, love the the video 💯
Hi Chris I just put quail eggs in to hatch just started back up as I sold up last year but I found I missed it to much not only that I was making a few pounds with it its a great hobby
Hi a couple things that looks like 1/2” wire. Also a large container like your feed bins with a quail plus size opening on the top or side could be used as a dust bath. I tried the casserole size baking pans and within a few hours most of the sand is gone. This might work in smaller cage environments like a stacker cage. I get a kick out them bathing so I want to let have the ability to get dirty when they want.
I can't use feeders because an ant invasion starts immediately. that's the problem with feeding my parrots, chickens, quails and lovebirds - here in Thailand. So I have to put a bowl of water under each feed container. all animals live in a giant aviary and the smaller ones inside the big one, in a smaller aviary
NO RECOMMEND !!! I want to tell everyone about my negative experience of working with this farm. Zack took an advance payment and I waited about 2 months for a package of eggs. As a result, 3 disabled chicks hatched from 80 eggs and died after 3 days. The rest of the eggs I opened were unfertilized. I have been quailing for 10 years and I know what I am talking about, I wanted to start a new Jumbo breed. I sent photos and videos to Zack. As a result of a week of correspondence with them, I did not even receive the promised 50% refund. Business advertising is very beautiful and loud, but in fact, the result is zero. Wasted time, money, and nerves, that's the result.
Great videos. Really helpful to us beginning in the hobby. I watched but couldn’t tell: what do your cages have on the top? Is it solid or is it mesh wire like the flooring?
Could hear your voice surprisingly well despite the fact there was a lot of wind but it's more comfortable to listen to when it has a screen so just a suggestion for the future.
Ellen Koch Are these dimensions for the jumbo/largest size quail, or should I allow more height for the larger birds? Thank you so much for your help and inspiration.
I find that if you make their feeders too small they can tip them over, something to keep in mind. I also noticed that they can still throw a lot of food out of those container if the holes are too low. Do you get much waste and how high the hole should be from the bottom?
I agree, if it is top heavy or too small, they will tip it over. I just put the holes about chest level to the birds. usually that is about as high up on the container as I can get them. I don't have any problems with waste really.
you can. It would be best to try and combine them before they get over 4 or 5 weeks old. ONce they hit sexual maturity they can get territorial and it can be difficult to combine them.
My rabbit just had her babies but she had them on the wire and they were all over the ground. There are still five alive what should I do with them? I don’t know if she’s taking care of them or not I just found them 10 minutes ago She didn’t pool for I put them in her nest box with hamster bedding to keep them warm and I’m heating up a sock full of rice. Let me know if I’m doing this right or wrong please. She’s a first time mom. Sorry if there are typos I’m doing this in A rush
Just a quick question I bought 1in poultry net and I was wondering if that would be ok. We live in maine so we don’t have snakes and I don’t think a rat big enough could get in and take one
You mentioned that they are quite hearty but is there a temperature range that you really should avoid exposure to and remove them from? We don’t dip below 40F at night time too often here but it can get over 100F in the summer days. Should I equip my hutch with controllable heaters or plan to move their hutch indoors when it’s too hot?
I watched the video on the making of this coop and wanted to ask how you went on with the sand box on top of the wire mesh. I was concerned that it would rust?
I’ve actually had field rats get on the poop trays under the cage and do the exact same thing as the fox was doing to yours. I’m not sure how to solve that problem just yet.
Hello! Myself and my family live in Canada we are thinking of getting quail! We have a greenhouse with our meat rabbits and hoping to put our quail in cages and into the same greenhouse . We go out 3 times a day for our rabbits water because it freezes in the winter. What water system is best for the quail? Is there a way to make a heated water system?
Once a day is fine. I only feed mine once a day. I try to fed about as much as they will eat in 24 hours. if there is food still in the feeder the next morning, I feed a little less, if they act like they are starving when I feed them, i give them a little more the next time. You will figure out how much they need pretty quickly but it is usually around 12 ounces a day per full grown rabbit. I hope that helps.
KC Quail Farm and Myshire Farm are both great suppliers of jumbo quail eggs. If you are looking to buy live birds, i would look for someone locally. Live birds don't ship well.
@@Slightlyrednecked Thanks Chris. I'm not far from McMurry hatchery. Although they do offer Coturnix Quail, they don't say jumbo. Is there a difference between just plane Coturnix and Jumbo Coturnix?
Where abouts are you located in sw Missouri? I live in Bentonville AR aka NWA, I'm wanting to get into raising Quail, do you sell Quail or Quail eggs? Subscribing to your channel for more information. Ty for sharing this video.
Im wanting to build a flight pen but 1/2in hard ware cloth is only 3ft tall & its expensive. Im gonna build a 5×10. Can you give me some advice on a flight pen withouy breaking the bank
If its for quail. The coturnix i have don't fly that high. I'll let them roam around a few acres, but they stay in a very close area, fly made 3-8ft high and as far as 75 ft when they really want to spread their wings. On avg, they won't fly that far around a yard, just getting exercise. But really, most of them aren't even interested in roaming around. They like to feel safe, like being in a cave. The safer they feel, they happier they will be and will lay more. Anyway, reason I'm saying this is in response to not breaking the bank. If you've got one that really wants out. Let in out around your house where predators can't get em. I had a flight pen for them, but they just didn't really get into it...well, not enough of them. Out of 100, maybe 4 or 5 wanted to really fly around. So you could just save all the money. Animals wanna feel wild sometimes, but these little uns just wanna feel safe and secure more than anything. I don't know if this was helpful at all, but wanted to share with ya. Take care, be safe.
@@Silver_Creek_Aquatics i lost all my quails to a neighbor's pit. So now im having to start over it destroyed my hutch. Im wondering if i can do chicken wire and then do some kind of netting inside
@@jessicagrimes8389 raccoons, opossums etc. can get through chicken wire. If they can, I'm certain a dog or fox could too. Hardware cloth is def the way to go.
I am struggling to come up with a cheaper solution that would be secure. I saw you mentioned chicken wire but I don't think that would be secure enough. You might be able to get away with chicken wire if you run a string of electric wire around the outside to keep predators from getting too close.
@@Slightlyrednecked When you come up with it.. you will be a rich man!...lol Seriously though, agriculture could use some new technology, and not the kind that links to a phone.
Focus...you're going to show us about how to build a coop and...got lost in feeder and waterer. Tape a cotton ball over the mic hole. I do lousy bee videos.
