A better approach would be to look at the amount of food consumed as the price varies. That way, you know how much each bird costs you to produce (Sorry...I'm an accountant and this is the sort of thing I do all the time) My quail get a particular brand that I can get here in the UK (Heygates). The supplier quotes 100 grammes per bird per week for the first 4 weeks and 115 grammes thereafter (these are typical values but environment and type may change the values slightly). 0-4 weeks Superstarter crumbs 4-6 weeks Grower mini-pellets (meat birds receive this until slaughtered) 6+ weeks Layer mini-pellets (Layers receive this for the remainder of their life) I can estimate the amount of food required per bird per week using this information: Week 1 - 100g Starter crumbs Week 2 - 100g Starter crumbs Week 3 - 100g Starter crumbs Week 4 - 100g Starter crumbs ------------------------------------------------ Total: 400g Starter crumbs - each bird will consume this much in the first 4 weeks regardless of whether they are intended for meat or breeding. They will then transition to Grower mini pellets which meat birds will receive for the remainder of their life. If we assume they are slaughtered at the end of week 8, they will have consumed a total of 460g (4 * 115) of grower mini-pellets. So, meat birds should consume a total of 400g starter crumb and 460g of grower mini-pellets each. Breeders only receive the grower mini-pellets for 2 weeks so consume 230g (2*115) before transitioning to layer mini-pellets which they will receive for the remainder of their life. For comparison purposes, they would require 230g of layer mini-pellets to bring them to 8 weeks of age. This is the age where meat birds would be slaughtered and layers should have begun laying. Layers (amount required per bird) 400g starter crumb 230g grower mini-pellet 230g layer mini-pellet Meat birds (amount required per bird) 400g starter crumb 460g grower mini-pellet As the cost of quail food is likely to vary, it is much more helpful to know the amount (weight) required so the cost can be anticipated for a given number of birds. It is also worth noting that layers have an ongoing cost beyond the 8 week mark as they continue to lay. From the information above, we can see that this can be anticipated as: 115g of layer mini pellets (since males and females occupy the same cage, it isn't really possible to allocate a different ration. So, both males and females receive 115g layer mini-pellet per bird) For the purposes of illustration, the last time I bought quail food from my local animal food shop, I paid £17.95 for a 20Kg bag of starter crumb (which contains Avatec to help prevent coccidiosis) and £13.70 for a 20Kg bag of grower mini-pellets. Since all birds receive 400g of starter crumb over the first 4 weeks, I can say that each bird cost me 35.9p ([£17.95/20,000] *400 and 15.76p ([£13.70/20,000] *230) for grower mini-pellets. In other words, the total cost was 51.66p (35.9 + 15.76) per bird. That's 52p for each 6 week old bird! Of course, quail are well known for wasting food but let's keep things in perspective. If the total cost of food for a 6 week old bird is 52p, how much extra should we add for wastage? It wouldn't be very much. Anyway, I thought this approach would be more useful as it shows how much of each type of food a quail should eat. If the cost of a bag is different next time I buy it, I can immediately see the cost implication. Now, who says accountants lead dull lives? 😀

Zach I love the numbers. We have yet to get started. If I incubate there is the initial outlay of money for incubator, brooder. heat lamp, waterers, feeders, more than one cage because of egg layers and a cage for extra males. If we just order breeder sets then I only have one cage to buy with waterer and feeder. In the long run hatching eggs is certainly more cost effective but with limited finances the initial set up for the "infra structure" is a little daunting.

Great video, ty. Another topic I would be very interested in is how to keep things going incase of grid down. I have bantams that could hopefully hatch out the quail eggs , and can create a stinky situation for fly larva , but not an option during winter months even though I'm in Florida. I also started farming worms. Anymore ideas? Also, I bought 200 eggs from you of golds&jw& jb . Thank you for the great info! I assume that it is critical to ensure that all that food actually goes into the quail. What do you do to reduce food waste? We all know how Coturnix love to rake their food into the cage where it falls to the bottom and into their droppings. I have built PVC feeders which virtually eliminate wasted food. What do you do to cut down on or eliminate wasted food?

I don't know that every lb or ounce of food is retained in the quail's body (they poop and pee, waste since quail are messy, etc) so wouldn't this number be a somewhat low assumption? it may not make much of a difference, but i think it would be a little more. when I get quail, I'll test this theory out by dividing that amount in food and dividing the quail for 8 weeks to feed and seeing if there's a small or large difference.

Zack your math is off. $7 for a family of 4 per meal. It may cost $1 to feed that quail. How about the cost of electricity to incubate the eggs and hatch them? How much to feed the breeders to get those eggs? How much for the heat lamp for the brooder? How much for the water? How much for the time? It’s not just fees costs. Now, if you buy the eggs to hatch out you have that cost. But you don’t have the breeder maintenance. It costs more than $1. Take your $1 and add another $1 for electricity and water and time. Now add feed costs for breeders to get that egg. .07-.09 per egg ish or more. I believe it’s well over $2.5 per bird by the time you butcher. Take into account losses along the way and price increases per bird as you lose some.
