You can actually read the Strogg language pretty easily if you concentrate a little bit. It's still English but with letters that have been changed or altered.
After he mentions the Stroggification I looked back at that on-rail cutscene and just noticed that as well. Somewhere it says "... implanted" and is just readable after the chip is implanted. Great detail!
People were intoxinated by new wave of shooters, so-called "realistic" ones, and Quake 4 got flak, among other things, for one-man-army gameplay, simple enemy AI, and lack of iron sights or headshots.
I love the look of these games from mid-2000s with high-contrast lighting. I've recently replayed FEAR and for a 10-year-old game, it looks fantastic. I'd even say that at times, it's visually more stunning than some of today's games, because the devs didn't just throw a bunch of particle effects and lens flares at the screen ("cough" Battlefield 4 "cough"), but used the possibilities of then advanced engines to build atmosphere and create unique images. Chaos Theory still looks better than Blacklist. Who gives a shit if it's not realistic, as long as it's beautiful.
TOCS It is sad, but it was inevitable. With production budgets constantly getting higher, it's getting harder for games to be profitable on a single platform. You can even see this on consoles. The last 2 generations had a lot of exclusive titles, but now, almost 3 years after the launch, you can count the numbers of mid-sized and big exclusives on XB1 and PS4 on the fingers of two hands.
Yup. Back then you needed talented developers to create a beautiful game, nowadays every game looks "beautiful" but generic af... God rays and lens flares are nowadays what bloom was back in the day.. A cheap trick to make your actually shitty lightning/low detail textures look better. A game like FEAR 1 for example: the best AI till this date in a FPS.. Enemies push over cabinets, flank you, call for backup, fall back at moments... You really had to outsmart your foes, no waiting behind cover till they peak over cover and headshot them. No. #1 would surpress you, while the 2 others would flank you... From above, from the sides.. Whatever would give them the upper hand in a certain situation. Hell you could even hear them communicate about what to do. They dont make em anymore like that... True craftmanship.
ABreathOfReason that is very true . You will notice that most games today in whatever genre have very poor AI compared to the past . The AI is what takes the most significant development time and is generally the most complex thing to program . It is what makes the world full of life and engrossing . Despite games having better and more realistic graphics these days they still seem bland , lifeless and boring and think that’s down to the atrocious AI . partly due to the fact that the good developers have just had enough and left this toxic Industry , which just cares about making shareholders happy and not about making good games ....
Mattchester - I haven't played Chaos Theory for years but I loved it. I think I'm going to go back and replay it. FEAR was so much fun too. The shooting was like a action movie with bullets flying through the air and everything exploding.
MforMovesets Tuns out doomguy was perfect because of his high armor capability. He could tank some serious damage and just keep killing. EDIT: I always thought of it as one day a portal randomly transported doomguy to a battle arena, and all he knew was he wasn't going down.
GraveUypo Some were faster than others, some were able to carry a higher maximum armor, some had more health than others, depended on which character you picked. Doom guy could stack massive amounts of armor, but wasn't the fastest character in the game. I think the fastest was that guy on a hoverboard thing that flew around all stupid fast.
+Pixelgunner101 underrated isn't really the correct word to use, as pretty anyone who looks at his videos instantly thinks they're great 99.999% of the time. A better word to use is Obscure.
Oh God I fucking love Quake 4. One of the things that stuck out for me was the fact that Quake 4 has the best companions in any FPS I've played. The AI is quite good and I often rely on them to help me out in a fight, especially on higher difficulties, and the medics and technicians heal me WHEN I ASK FOR IT, which is a far cry from other games (like Bioshock Infinite) where the companion only heals me when they feel like it (I've died so many times in Infinite because Elizabeth wouldn't throw me a damn medkit when I needed it). Hell, they'll even come in and heal/patch up my armor on their own volition if I fall below a certain threshold, which is great. Funny enough, I actually enjoyed the vehicle sections. All right, the turret sections were a bit boring, but I actually found driving a tank and mech to be quite enjoyable. Not as good as FEAR 2's mech segment, but certainly fun nonetheless. I pretty much grew up with Raven and id, and it's damn good to know that other people feel the same way. As for why this game got mediocre reception, well, keep in mind that in 2005, modern FPS tropes were new and fresh, while old school shooters like this have been done many times. And due to suffering from a severe case of "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" people didn't realize the flaws of modern FPS until it was too late. I'm sure if you spread the word about Quake 4 nowadays, it'd hold up a lot better than a lot of modern FPS.
I feel you, this game is amazing, I still play it once in while and I even enjoy it more now that my PC runs this game smoothly, back in the day I struggled to run this game with my old PC. I love the companions as well because I love to get into the action, face to face combat and thanks to the medics I can recover without having to search for health in every corner. As far as I can remember, the game had a mediocre reception because of the multiplayer mode which sucked so much and even more if you compared it with Quake III Arena, people was expecting more the multiplayer experience than the campaign one, which critics at the time totally forgot, seemed they didn't even played it. People went straight to the multiplayer mode and got disappointed, which honestly is not fair, the game is a masterpiece.
Agreed. Your AI teammates seldom get in the way even in tight quarters. They also intelligently focus on enemies you're having an issue with. One of the better examples of friendly AI done right.
I played it on my Xbox 360 and it was quite a charm, definitely gives off Doom 3 vibes but in a good way. I'm kinda worried whether or not I should get it again on Steam since I have a Windows 10 Laptop, any modding that allows it to run would be great!
It's my favorite Quake. I played the shit out of it with my grandpa in his basement next all his ham radio equipment. Gotta love those old games where they really pushed the hardware available at the time of release, so they compensated with cramped level design. We got lost so much our first couple of playthroughs that it was almost harder keep track of your location than fighting the actual enemies.
I've always wanted a real sequel to Quake, with the Medieval settings and H.P. Lovecraft themes.. I understand why that didn't happen (Romero left), but the Strogg story arc that started with Quake 2 just felt like Quake wanting to become another Doom.
Yeah, as much as I love Quake 2 I always found the Strogg pretty boring. They're just edgier Borg from Star Trek. Quake 1's atmosphere and enemies may have just been the real life result of slapping disparate ideas together quickly and recklessly but it resulted in a legitimately creepy and mysterious game.
Me too, man. Wrath looks like it could be it. It's far more Quake than Quake 2 and 4, though as good as they were, they were just not sequels to Quake, but their own franchise.
Honestly, I think the opposite. I too prefer Quake 1 (but still love strogg) but Quake 2 was what was trying to avoid being a doom clone. Afterall, Quake and Doom share the same backstory: a military science facility discovered interdimensional travel and end up connecting our realm to a sinister messed up one that is hell bent (in Doom's case, literally) on consuming ours. Quake 2 on the other hand threw all that away in favor of an alien war.
Bravo! BRAVO! So happy to FINALLY see someone give this game a good review. I've played the absolute death out of this game as well as Quake 2, and I can't understand at all why people hate it so much.
TheJayson8899 Oblivious enough to have a differing opinion. Also, I dont see why you need to make about 5 different snarky comments on a video that has been out for only a few hours. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something?
Ian Knau it wasn't very similar to Quake 1 and 2's single player, so people AUTOMATICALLY hated it. Which is dumb as fuck because it's made by a different company altogether. Plus they are probably still pissing and moaning due to Doom 3 not being what they wanted. It's because of assholes like these that good games get very bad reps.
I am one who disliked it a lot. I did in fact hate it and you are probably correct for it being because it wasn't a lot like Quake 2. I'll admit that Q3A wasn't what I wanted or expected it to be, but I loved Q3A and could play more of it right now! Yes, Doom 3 to me wasn't really a Doom game in my eyes, either, but I LOVED Doom 3! Why did I hate Quake 4 so much!? Several reasons besides just not being a carbon copy of Quake 2. It wasn't even entirely that, but it was sometimes like the game gave me the impression that I was going to experience something I was familiar with at times... WRONG!!! Where was my power shield from Quake 2? I was dying way to easily in spots making it frustrating and if the power shield from Quake 2 was somewhere to be found to give me some protection, that would have been bad-ass! Why wasn't the weapon I picked up the weapon I thought it was? The nail-gun in Quake used to be powerful, especially the super nail-gun; this one I had to empty clips into enemies before it seemed to do anything! Wait... THIS ISN'T A RAIL-GUN!!! It doesn't pass thru enemies, it's taking multiple shots to do any damage worth talking about.. where's my rail-gun!? **Later on rendezvous with military guy** "Here, let me upgrade your weapon so it can shoot multiple targets." **Guy flips a frikkin' switch on the gun my guy apparently couldn't find** "There you go!" WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F***!!!??? The rail-gun still was useless. This S*** persisted through the game and those military F***S would always be in my way hindering my movement making me even more angry. Since when can those fat heavy berzerkers jump in the air, pummel the ground AND do massive damage to you if you don't jump the F*** back!!!??? I finished the game and handed it to my friend while deleteing every copy! Yes, it made me very unhappy. Raven software should have stuck to making Shadow Caster 2, Hexen 3 or Heretic 2! NOT this and NOT Wolfenstein, either! P.S. RTCW WAS AWESOME!!!
+Vengence ye i remember my dad coming home one day and gave me this game and at first i thought it was just a bad quake game but it was actually really fun :)
You know whats really horrible about this game? The german cut version, its not even funny its just a joke. I mean the whole operation scene got cut out, suddenly you are some alien halfbreed and you dont even know why :D
I'm always surprised when I hear about Germany's strict censorship laws. I don't know why the powers that be feel the need to screw people by neutering their games. all things considered, I'm fairly certain that all Germans are aware that violence exists...
Yeah thats true^^ I mean it got better in recent years but still was just absurd sometimes. Also, there is just really no point to it, i can simply download an uncut patch or order an uncut version with german language from austria.
With each video and pop culture reference, i'm getting more and more interested in your (hopefully) eventual Half Life 2 review.BTW, the 60FPS looks great!
Ah yes, the much underappreciated Quake 4. The game that everybody hated because A: It wasn't Quake 3 or Quake 1 and B: it continued the story of the Strogg wars from Quake 2, which people had apparently decided was stupid. Personally i loved both Quake 2 and 4 and i played the absolute heck out of them when i was younger. I absolutely loved the idea and the design of the Strogg as an enemy, especially from Quake 2. My only regret with these games was that i didn't have a good enough internet connection to play them online. Being able to play against other people instead of being stuck playing only the SP campagins would have made Q2 and Q4 even better.
Karl The Fragr Quake 2 was scary. Once I realized these things I was fighting were once human, and had been forcibly butchered and turned into robotic slaves that could very well be in agony as they fought you, with their minds trapped screaming in silent agony.
Funny thing is that I never liked Quake 1 when others loved it. Never really got into it. But Quake 2 is just amazing, and I played hundreds of hours of Quake 3 back in a day. Quake 4 is in my top shooters, even higher than Doom 3. It has good atmosphere and scares, and for me, Stroggs are more scary than demons of Doom 3, because you know, that they are basically your former comrades. I kinda see that on surface it looks like futuristic CoD, when it plays much more oldschool, so some folks dismissed it on that first impression but man, what a game. Vehicle parts are meh, I must admit, and I feel that highest difficulty levels are not challenging but unfair but that is only criticism I would ever have.
Like yourself I'm a huge "id & Raven Software" fan, I always savor your game reviews of any of their iconic gems. I've seen pretty much everything on "Quake 4" & your profile on it is the best I've seen. Thanks for creating your review channel, you've quickly become my favorite game reviewer today, keep it up man.
I remember playing through the campaign at a summer camp where we were learning game design. That opening cinematic where you see the dead marines and the spacecraft wreckage floating in the void was one of the goriest things I'd even seen in a video game at that time, and I remember after playing only a few minutes, I was completely hooked. Everyone always wanted to do the multiplayer or play Battlefiled 2142 (or whatever year that one is set in), but I'd spend all my free time getting further in the campaign. It kicked me in the teeth over and over on the Normal difficulty since I hadn't played any other old school FPS games besides Half Life at the time, but it was so good I didn't want to stop. Finally finished it and I remember they gave us copies of Battlefield to take home with us at the end of camp, but I was begging for a copy of Quake 4. I really need to buy this on Steam when they have another sale.
BaileysBeads I played it year ago and it somehow ran but was very buggy. I had the disk from my cousin and it asked me multiple times for CD key in menu and crashed while playing multiple times. Let's hope Q5 returns with campaign and fast paced arena combat.
Vladimir VojtaML the story was concluded in this game and the strogg were defeated in the end of the game including quake 2 so no! they wont continue it imao?
Wasn't spoiled for me. It was as fucked up as you think. I was a little bit more naive then and kept watching it and thinking "Oh he's gonna get saved...... um, that sucks but he'll get saved..... um, might be in the hospital for a while but any second now....... holy shit, this is happening!"
As a kid who grew up with Quake 2, I was just waiting for a fucking railgun instead of the right arm, hyperblaster to the left and a shoulder cannon the moment I saw kane strapped.
This game was totally unfairly judged when it was released. I loved it and it looked amazing back when the Doom 3 engine was still king of the block. Great gameplay with frills getting in the way.
TheJayson8899 Considering how staled it's the genre in this moment you could consider kinda old school, back in the day the AAA industry allowed more diversity and originality. Nowdays something so different as Spec ops the line is considered a failure in sales by some greedy AAA publishers
Alem Hukic I actually enjoyed the boss fights of all three games. They ain't too bad once you learn their attack patterns and adapt to them. Hell, I can trounce most bosses in Doom 3 within a minute because of that.
Now that I've finally played and finished it, I can say I agree with you almost 100%. Quake 4 wasn't groundbreaking, but it was much, much more fun than what reviews from when it came out led me to believe. They did a very decent job, and killing stroggs was as awesome as ever ^^
I love this channel, I have been a hardcore fan of FPS games since I was a child and you visit most of the most memorable titles of the genre, great memories
1. Start the game 2. Turn all graphics options to max 3. See that the graphics are actually decent even now There you go And don't try to argue with me, I've finished the game 6 times and spent many hours with it.
I've never seen the game in this state. Isn't that the lowest options? I remember when I played this game in 2008 and thought the graphics were excellent.
@@agbrenv The game never looked so shitty and i dont even understand where you got this idea. It looked like Doom 3 by the release, it came out years after that game.
I have so much nostalgia for this game. My dad bought it for me when it came out (I was about 8 at the time) and it scared the living shit out of me. It took me ages to complete because it scared me so much, but I eventually got there, and my god is it a brilliant game.
Great Review, I always thought that this game was way too unappreciated. Especially when that was a time where cinematic FPSs were on the rise. The fact that it got flogged during the same year CoD 2 came out has me a little suspicious though
I remember absolutely loving this game when I first got it and couldn't understand why it got such average reviews. On second and third playthroughs I found that the first half of the game is a bit of a chore to play through, such as the missions where you are still without the strogg suit and have to wait for your squad mates to have a chat to each other before continuing on with the action. If you could take out the vehicle missions, and make the first half of the game as fast and difficult as the second half, the game would be so much better. Although the multiplayer always felt really clunky compared to Quake 3.
To me, it was firing the guns that drop the framerate. Especially on the tram level. But I played worse, which is good since I built a toleration with framerate per second that are bad
Do people have weak stomachs nowadays or something? A little stutter in an otherwise smooth game is fine. I've heard people complaining about 120fps dropping to 90fps for a bit.
No, stutter is not fine and neither are significant framerate drops. They significantly break immersion and remind you that you're only playing a shitty game. They make the experience feel disjointed and unpolished. These issues should have already become things of the past 10 years ago. Lazy half assed development these days and shills defending it as if we should be happy about it and thanking them for their constantly deteriorating quality standards. Releasing games broken, unfinished and unoptimized is NOT fine. Releasing games capped at 30fps on PC or consoles is NOT fine. Gaming is in need of another crash. Too many casuals being catered to who often don't have a clue. These issues should have only gotten better over time, not worse. The devs don't even seem to care anymore, they take their audience for granted and can be down right insulting with their practices. Alas, time is limited regardless. The whole Western system is going down in flames and the gaming industry will not be spared.
Recently got nostalgic for this game as I never finished it on initial release. Downloaded weapon mods, increase damage to lessen bullet sponge, and zoom function for all weapons. Shotgun also has flashlight function. Gotta say that I'm impressed by it. The on rail sections, while a chore, are too few to ruin an otherwise well made FPS experience. I imagine most of the issues were related to multiplayer, because the campaign is pretty damn awesome.
I really want the Dark Matter Gun to remain Quake's BFG. Like the BFG the DMG is beyond awesome to use, but it doesn't follow the same rules as the BFG and thus feels like a unique gun.
A great part of Quake 4 is that it came with a bonus disc that included a bunch of special features, including an HD version of Quake 2 (which I believe is the best version of Quake 2, only available on the 360). I still have both of the discs. Being a console only person now and then, it is great to boot up my 360 to play it.
@Demiclea On the hardest difficulty the Quake 4 marines get taken out very easily by certain enemies. Namely the Berserker which was a real pain in the ass. Halo CE legendary marines get wiped instantly.
You know I didn't dislike this game. Most of the stuff it did might have been done better by other games but it wasn't by any means bad... I would have loved to see more user mods for it. That sort of thing could take the serviceable in-the-box mechanics and build on them until they really shine. Unfortunately I only ever saw one that managed to do that. I remember mythbusters found that holding onto a dozen weapons at once isn't so unrealistic if you're a generic FPS type of character. Seem to recall their test was Doom 3-themed.
I know this video is old, but I'm a recent subscriber, so I've kinda been binging on your content... I'm so glad to see someone else that loves old school shooters as much as me. Quake 4 was the first game I picked up at the Xbox 360 launch, and I still think it's one of the stronger shooters on the platform, despite its framerate issues. Plus the flawless port/HD remaster of Quake 2 that was included was an incredible bonus. I wish my laptop didn't need a new motherboard, or they'd put Quake 4 on backward compatibility for Xbox One. I'd love to play though it again.
It's definitely easier to come back to this game than it was to play it at the time, it was surrounded by absolute classics of the genre when it came out aging it immediately. Think about it, 2004 saw Half Life 2 nearly crack the planet in half with how good it was, DOOM 3 delivering something people never thought they'd see, Far Cry pushing graphics technology. Quake 4 arrived in 2005, with competition from Battlefield 2 which was amazing, COD2 which is a classic, F.E.A.R creating the new standard in action horror, Brothers in Arms with its unique squad mechanics. Then 2006 where we saw a sea change towards console shooters, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Resistance, COD3, the PS2 keeping up with Black and Urban Chaos, then Prey finally came out which in many ways is similar in design to Quake 4, a more traditional PC shooter which at the time was also ignored by many, but if you're looking for a straight forward old school shooter campaign these days Quake 4 and Prey are brilliant to go back to, it's just not what people wanted at the time.
Quake IV to me is the best of the series.Mainly by all the reasons you said. Old School shooting and bad-ass bosses and Weaponry in a time that the genre was on his last moments. Great Review as always.
Spend hundreds of hours building levels, creating atmospheric environments and puzzle heavy open ended pathways. What they did with the game, lightning, speed, weapons, everything receives my respect. A must play.
This is sort of what's happening with Doom 4: It seems like everyone hates it because it's not like Quake 1, when it's more like Quake 2. Doom 4 is sort of more like Doom 64 + D00M 3, yet people seem to hate it because it's ported to consoles. A shame really. Quake IV is still a fun game though
Q4 is a legit good sequel to Q2, in certain aspects it expands on Q2 feel and with care. The multi-player in Quake 4 was worse than in Quake 2 but that's not saying much since I think Q2 and Q4 are the weakest in multi. Q1 and Q3 were the real multi-player giants.
Q4 is the "black sheep"? REALLY? I couldn't disagree more! I always viewed Q3: Arena as the true "black sheep" in the Quake series. Because it IS! I mean, DON'T get me wrong - it's a very well-made Multiplayer-FPS game and is a LOT of fun to play, but that's the problem - it's NOT an FPS game - it's a MULTIPLAYER-FPS game. ONLY. The closest thing it has to a single-player component is playing exclusively against the CPU bots. Not even the vaguest semblance of a narrative is present, nor is there any sense of "progression"; the WHOLE THING takes place purely on a match-by-match basis. Nor is there really consistently reminiscent of Quake as a series... it's JUST a Multiplayer-FPS game that happens to be called "Quake 3", when really the "Arena" part of its title is the only accurate part of it. Frankly, I thought they had some nerve charging full retail price for it, back when it came out. They were demanding we pay $50.00 for what other FPS titles usually included as a nifty afterthought to the parts of the game that took actual THINKING, and PLANNING and WRITING to make. Actually, in the book Masters of Doom by David Kushner (pick it up if you've never heard of it! It's an excellent novelization about all the guys that formed Id Software), it's made painfully clear that Quake 3: Arena's entire design plan was centered around John Carmack basically getting imaginatively lazy and laboring under the belief that gamers didn't WANT narrative structure or progression in games. Personally though, I also think he was trying to avoid having to bother with any of that stuff, since he was, at that point in time, head-honcho of Id Software. "Engine John" had become so overly focused on his graphics programming that if it didn't pertain directly to fully utilizing the engine's speed and rendering capabilities, it might as well be irrelevant. To him, narratives only slowed things down. But for fuck's sake, even Wolf 3D and the original Doom games still had fully-developed single-player campaigns and basic narratives! Okay, yeah, they may have only consisted of 2 or 3 sentences, but at LEAST they were THERE! At least the player had a vague idea of what the fuck was going on, where they were, who they were shooting at, and why, and it made sense. I honestly couldn't wrap my head around the hate surrounding Quake 4. I thought it was good! At least it was an ACTUAL continuation of the series, finally! It had Strogg to kill, the levels and art design and music were all themed after Quake 2, but also felt fresh and new enough to remain interesting throughout the whole game. Basically, it was a SEQUEL to Quake 2.
+Xandermorph The "black sheep" is referred to as the worst member of the family. Most people agree Q1-3 are all great games where people generally say Q4 is the weakest. That's what I meant.
+Xandermorph i enjoyed the ever living fuck out of quake 4, perfect dark zero and Prey I refused to touch call of duty 2 I hated it for the most part i did really like 4 because of how fresh it felt at the time but other than that its formula and control scheme is WAYYY over used and dead. awsome games like FEAR 1 were sadly dumbed down to corny trash like F3AR publishers decided that we want more Halo/COD in all of our games and less Quake/unreal/NOLF/perfect dark. Quake 4 is a proper sequel to Q2 not counting that it had the original Q3 multiplayer on top of an amazing campaign at launch glitch free something we don't see today in any game today.
Badass awesome game when it was released in 2005. I played it again recently after 15 years, graphics detail is a bit out of date but the suspense makes up for it.
Great review. Thanks :) Indeed, Quake 4 got a lot of undeserved hate. It surely feels pretty different from the older Quake games, but this isn't necessarily a flaw. I see it more like an attempt to translate the Quake formula into the "language" of modern shooters. The unifying element of the Quake series is not the visual style or the storylines, it's rather the spirit and the hot explosive gameplay. It's a game that aims to quake you to the core, regardless of whether this happens in dark Lovecraftian dungeons or in a high-tech Strogg facility.
Wow good review! I want to check the game out now I never played quake 4 because of how many people told me it's lame but you make it look and sound awesome!
I live maybe 30 minutes from Raven Software and I have yet to play any of their games. Is that bad? On the other hand, I've wanted this for some time and it looks great. Great review as always and GLORIOUS 60FPS!
Quake IV is awesome but it´s sad ID or Raven never released an expansion pack to extend the story. I hope someday ID come back to the Stroggos universe with another Quake game. BTW, will you review Quake wars?
I can't really enjoy Half Life 2 anymore because of the effects it had on games up to this day. It gave all these devs the idea that making people hold W during what's basically an unskippable cut scene is some great thing since it keeps player "control" (instead of doing it like in HL1, where you actually had control at all times after that opening sequence)
Lol. So sweet and innocent. Little did we know who GmanLives would become Love your work. Thanks. Fun to catch up with your old work and how far you come
Are you playing this with a controller? The reticule and aiming seem very stiff and rigid. If anything that controller and Quake's 'consolisation' just reminds me what eventually turned me off from the Quake series.
TheJayson8899 Maybe I should have phrased it better, and said, "This game is a turn off and I fear subsequent entries in the series will follow this example or this template instead of the faster paced older games" Which is basically toning down the speed and pace of the series so that it can be more palatable on consoles. Grow up in terms of what? Because I never said controllers are horrible and are a piece of shit or anything like that. I said the aim is stiff and rigid, which it is. And the controller reminds me of just how much they had to change Quake to make it more palatable to console owners and controllers.
SaintAlia_of_the_Games The aiming is smooth, it's just that when I capture footage I try to keep my mouse steady so people can see what is going on, so I try to not move it erratically if that makes sense. I find a lot of other reviewers capture footage and forget that they're showing it off in their videos and half the time the mouse flies all around the screen.
Gggmanlives Okay then, thanks for that. You must have turned the sensitivity down some though, I don't think I've watched a mouse so steady before. That or the game was that slow that it was not an issue. I haven't played it in years and have mostly forgotten it until I saw your review.
***** If you think this plays 'fast', I'm just going to assume you've never played previous Quake games or just older fps games in general. OG Quake and older Serious Sam must blow your mind. Nice assuming I haven't played the game as well, but I suppose otherwise it would ruin your argument and then you'd have to deal with someone having an opinion dissimilar to your own and not liking something you like. That can be crushing to people on the internet I've noticed..
Quake 4 was so good that when they released it on steam years later I bought it a second time.... how funny all these years later Doom 2016 and eternal get praised for much the same combat Quake 4 got trashed for.
@@GraveUypo Indeed. The first game was a cobbled together mash-up of ideas. It supposedly started as something like medieval fantasy with a Thor-like protagonist, then it incorporated Lovecraftian elements, but some of the ideas got so crazy, and the time was running out, that they returned to what they knew best: Space Marines fighting demons. The result was the mishmash of gothic fantasy and sci-fi that we all know and love as the original Quake. Then Quake 2 was originally going to be a new space sci-fi shooter franchise, but they decided to slap the Quake name on it for marketing reasons. It had more fame and recognition. Quake 3 Arena is essentially a Multiplayer game with a "campaign" of disconnected arena bot-fights against the CPU tacked-on. The story of the game is summarized in the game manual. Basically, a super-powerful race of gods/aliens (can't remember which) decides to create an arena tournament to see which is the most powerful warrior in all the multiverse, just for their amusement. So.. pretty much the plot of League of Legends. And Quake 4 is the sequel to Quake 2. So logically it shares the same themes/storyline for the most part. The differences between the two games are due to the years that separate their respective releases. The design of Quake 4 was to some degree influenced by that of other popular shooters of its time (including Id's own Doom 3). That, combined with the desire to experiment with new gameplay elements and possibilities not technically available back in the '90s (vehicle sections, squadmates, cutscenes) resulted in a game that, while trying (and IMO succeeding) in continuing the story and setting of Quake 2, also incorporated some "trends" of at the time "modern" gaming that weren't entirely welcome by the old school fans. Stuff like realistic moving speed (up until Stroggification), vehicle sections, dialog and cutscenes that interrupted the "shoot shoot bang bang", a focus on a pseudo-realistic military, instead of the lone-wolf badass space marine one-man army. I guess that's why people think of Quake 4 as the "black sheep", even though it was a great game.
If they do a new Quake game, the dark matter gun is a must. One of the coolest weapon concepts I have ever seen. I associate BFG more with the Doom games.
Quake 4 came out around the worst possible time.. there were a lot of novel, revolutionary things happening in FPS games at that time, and that was the standard..worst time for an old school fps to come out
