Learning Quake + CTF and Dueling was THE MOST REWARDING GAMING EXPERIENCE OF MY ENTIRE LIFE! Once you learn and I mean REALLY learn the game, it's just rewarding and addicting. You can move so much faster , shoot so much more accurate, your map knowledge, item knowledge and predictability (them, not you) just go through the roof. The game is simple from a new players perspective, but the rabbit hole never really ends. You can do some insane shit in Quake. I miss the good ol Quake frag movies that would come out every week.

To be honest, everything you've said in the first minute pretty much also applies to TF2, a game I have been playing for over 7 years. Games are similar enough that some mechanical skills transfers from one to another. So right now I don't really have problems with things like bhopping or rocketjumping despite having just started without playing any Quake titles before, but it's the gamesense I'm struggling with. This video was rather useful in that regard. Thanks!

I actually played Quake Live FFAs on and off "casually" for like 5 years without learning anything about the games mechanics besides strafe jumping which I was taught how to do CPM style by a few kind individuals in the community and then somehow I figured out VQ3 on my own. Never wanted to watch videos on Quake because I always wanted to naturally get good at the game myself. But when Quake Champions I figured I'd finally have to start learning some **strats** if I was going to play team games and didn't want to be a burden, and the major item timing thing was something I had never even thought about while playing, I never questioned how enemies seemed to know exactly when the quad would spawn and why I would die so quick. It was damn mind blowing when I saw this video and I felt like an idiot for not recognizing it sooner but I was so excited to try it out. But for the past 3 years I've been playing Quake "seriously" I've had a blast and have been pretty much addicted to it. But not in a bad way, the amount of focus I feel when playing the game has actually helped me a lot with learning how to manage my ADHD. Thank you very much for this video.

Really wish I had this video when the closed beta started, I've been playing quake off an on since Q1. Never really considered myself amazing, probably played Q2 the most in College. But, now that you mentioned it, and watching my daughter play Overwatch, Quake truly is the most difficult newb-unfriendly shooter I've ever come across and I love it for that, it takes a whole lot more work to get good than other games, especially what's out now. Thanks for the tips, I'm going to go back into the training maps by myself until I get strafe jumping down, and I realize (been playing since the closed beta) I'm way too aggressive and get killed too often because I just rush into enemies when I see them, this game is about tactical survival more than run and gun.

I played other fps before QC, and that helped me. But it took maybe 20-40hrs to be in top 3 most of the time. Now at 700hrs some matches are like a walk in a park and some are tough as shit. There are always going to be someone better than you, and losing is fine. There are always things to practice and so forth. If you want to get good, you can also watch pros play. Names were mentioned in the video. Also, this guy makes really good tutorials. Thank you for everything you do for the community FrothyOmen! Subscribed.

I've been playing Quake for over a decade now and can remember that process in this video. I remember being in t2 in Quake live back in browser and jumping from t2 to t3 and then t3 to t4 for along time and then one day I was finally just t4 gold. Then I started dueling and it was the same thing over again I finally hit t4 but quit dueling for 5 years or so. When I was though I was good at timing and throughout that time I wasn't dueling I focused on my aim for years where I'd get upset if my lg wasn't 25% then I hit 27%, 32, 35, 38, 40, etc. Now in Quake live I use the lg only when I know I can hit it and now my lg accuracy is always around 40 - 60. It's mainly about 50% and 56% 85 percent of the time though. Then once I went back to dueling again recently just on and off. My timing is awful xD but my aim is on point where even in a duel I still hit a consistent lg and rail gun accuracy. I have always had problems with the rockets though for whatever reason I'm just back and awful with them. Not sure if it's my small monitor and it's 60hz refresh rate or what. But I love your videos and even as a great player like me I enjoy watching to this day pros playing and tutorials much like this. It is probably the only game I am constantly studying and preparing for that exam of achieving the highest grade possible, and maybe one day be a even better player that can duel in the Greek God zone. All I need is Danny Devito from Hercules and my Sword, you wanna be my Phil Frothy???

First of i want to say that i like and appreciate your channel. Haven't played Quake since Q3 Arena so you are a excellent source to re-learn old things somewhat forgotten. When i first heard of Quake Champions i got intrigued but at the same time skeptical towards it because it seemed to have very mixed reviews, so i didn't buy it in the end. I finally picked it up this weekend when Bethesda gave it away to whoever downloaded it within the dates it is free to play. I must say it feels very quake in a fresh way, cant consider myself a quake purist because the various classes doesnt bother me. Its actually very fun and hard at the same time, it makes you wanna do better to get that guy who obliterated you with rocket launcher. Don´t really like lootboxes and in game currency but it doesnt seem impact actual gameplay so that becomes more of a non issue. Anyhow you got yourself a new subscriber.

Quake is a masterpiece... i gotta admit. I play Overwatch for over 2 years and never played Quake in my life before, i started playing Quake a few weeks ago, i recently improved a little bit just enough to win some deathmatchs at ease, it seems insignificant in Quake but this experience made me become better in Overwatch. i mean, it's not like i'm crazy good now, but the difference is becoming quite clear. Quake made me see how important movement, map control, positioning and survivability are, way more than kills. I mean... i probably should have learned all of this before since they are important for pretty much every competitive game. but i never played a game like Quake that is as hard to new players than it is to veterans, most other newer and more modern games like League, Dota, Overwatch, CSGO, etc. are noob friendly compared to Quake. My point is: i never felt necessity to learn any of this because i never needed it to win matches against players of my level (mid rank) in others game. english is not my primary language, sorry for any mistakes, feel free to correct me, but i hope i spoke well enough for you to understand

I know QC is all but dead now days but anyone still looking to get into it I highly recommend playing expert or nightmare bots whenever you don't have anyone to play with or can't find a lobby etc. It's not like other games, playing difficult bots in this game is actually really good practice - especially for learning the maps and practicing map control. The fights can be much easier than real players, but there are also times when the bots decide to straight up aim bot and it can improve your aim and reaction time with things like the railgun and lightning gun.

Very good advice, Frothy. Couldn't agree with you more. Awesome vid, by the way. (Was that you playing as Slash? Killer moves!) Maybe this should be a "level 2" piece of advice, but in the many, many, many years I've played Quake I've noticed one really critical shortcoming of inexperienced players... New players typically have no idea how the weapons work, nor do they know the damage they inflict - both to their opponent as well as themselves. Perhaps worst of all, new players have no idea about splash damage, hit-scan weapons, and the dreaded plasma-delay (Nail-Gun/Tri-Bolt delay) or the Machinegun/Shotgun spread as distance increases. I think you have a really solid grasp on Quake dynamics, so I bet you could make an awesome vid on the brutal subtleties of the weapons and how to use them effectively. For what it's worth!

Recently came back to the game and played some tdm with what seemed like new players. For all you newbies out there good on you for hanging in there, quake can be brutal for beginners. I just want to say if you are starting focus on the following: 1) learn strafe and circle jump. Even just basic understanding helps with map traversal. You need to get on armor or a good weapon, especially if you play light champs. 2) learn about stacks. Know how armor and health works. Know about mega and heavy/red armor. 3) Have a basic understanding of the holy-trinity of weapons. That is the rocket launcher(rl), lightning gun(lg), and railgun(rail). These three are arguably the most powerful and useful weapons in the game. They each excel in certain range and situations. They also act as counters to each other. 4) While standing still is usually not a good idea, strafe jumping from room to room isn’t always good either. Unless you are rushing down someone with rocket or lg, strafe jumping right up to the enemie’s face makes you an easy target. Know when to go fast and when to go slow, when to chase, and when to fall back. In fact, depending on the weapon the enemy is using there are certain ways you move to make yourself harder to hit. 5) Positioning is important. You don’t want to be standing still in the middle of a big room as you can take fire from multiple directions(especially in death match). In TDM you generally want to stay around your team, so you have backup. In duel you see pro players keep an engagement distance. Unless committing to a fight they generally stay a room away and typically have a fall back option. 6) Map knowledge comes naturally, but’s it’s always nice to know where your favorite weapons, health, and armor are. 7) Finally the default machine gun/super machine gun can be pretty good at range. In close range you might get bursted by rocket or shotgun, but at range when enemy have trouble hitting you with rail, it’s surprisingly effective at shredding the enemy’s health.

Looking to get this game when I get home today, I've been playing overwatch for 2 years now and I really just see it going downhill. I've watched a few videos on quake and it seems really interesting. I know it wont even compare to overwatch in terms of playstyle but I've been looking for something new to try until smash bros ultimate comes out lol. Hopefully I find myself enjoying this.

I played when the beta was initially released but got bored pretty quick due to limited map selection. Now seeing that it's pretty diverse, I'm looking to get back into this game. I'm a big Overwatch junkie but I'm starting to get burnt out and I need a little bit of variety in my FPS library.

I have been playing quake for years and I must say that this video hit everything on the nail. Totally spot on with what a new player to quake needs to know and watch and not be discouraged. Really good job! I wish this kind of advice was around when I first started playing. I could not have said it better myself.

Thanks for the share! Lotta great tips in this one ^.^ I try to remind players I meet who sometimes get discouraged, that "we all have to start somewhere" and that (to some extent) experience will transfer over to other games. Everyone starts out as a beginner/newbie ^_~ but as mentioned in this video, after a few weeks of practice (as in almost anything) you'll be turning the tides of matches and enjoying the nuances of games, which might have seemed 'tricky' at first. Goodluck and have a fun time!

It had been years since I had played an arena shooter last. I grew up on quake and unreal tournament so after a bit of an adjustment period, this game definitely feels sort of oddly natural to play. AND its great damn fun. Feels good, looks good, sounds good. It's a damn fine package. As always for anyone new to arena shooters. Just try to have fun. Getting good comes second. Having fun should be always first. When you are having a good time, you eventually start to get better, then you can start training the more advanced movement, knowing some specifics, map timings and such.

I got into quake champions when it was closed alpha and I liked it. I played a lot of quake 3 arena way back when and was fairly good at it but I noticed that I had lost A LOT of mechanics of these type of shooters over the years and while I had fun with the game I kept getting bodied more times than not. But after watching this video and your tips I might be giving the game another shot and to make an effort to get good at it. So thanks a lot! :)

>Avoid Doomguy as much as possible as a new player As a new player, Doomguy was my first buy. Because, as a guy who is nearing 2k hours sunk into Team Fortress 2, Doomguy feels like the Scout, with his double jump. I admit, I suck as Scout, but as he is my tertiary main I try to apply how I play Scout to how I play Doomguy. Is it working? Sorta. Quake and TF2 are two separate engines with two separate movement styles, but I still feel like a little of my skills can carry over. The Nailgun feels like the Needlegun without dropoff, rocket launcher from both games feels kinda similar, super shotty is a slower firing scattergun, etc etc. The game is fun though, even if I suck and can only really play a few matches a day before switching off for whatever reason, steamrolled, other cravings, etc.

New to the quake series, the community has been great. No toxicity like csgo. The learning process is quite infuriating, but it’s so fun I have to just keep practicing. You make it look easy!

Yeah, I have and still watch them to work on my technique. Sometimes I build up speed pretty quick and other times I can't seem to do it for the life of me. I usually practice with ranger. Funny thing is I've been playing FPS's for a long, long time. But competitive Quake is a whole new ball game lol
@RMosher11

I think I just had a breakthrough. You HOLD the strafe key to gain speed?? At least I do with ranger. I can zip up to 600+ ups in no time now! My circle jumping however is still a work in progress (still suck at it)

Easy to learn hard to Master. Love QC I was in the team that was complaining about Champions and abilities and stuff. Damn I was WRONG. Game is just AWESOME!! CHampions are well balanced and game is improving Very fast. New Gore system is Amazing but entering "the arena" is Hard and player must be patience or skilled ;)

even though i didn't really mind starting out bad (still am tbh) and having to dig deep into yt to learn the game it does somewhat feel like the game's lack of tutorialization and alternate modes has held back the game from seeing mass appeal again which is a shame. what got me thinking about this was street fighter 6, a similarly complex long standing game dominated by longtime high skill players. unlike quake however SF6 has seen a boom of success with praise for its thurough yet optional tutorialization and excellent optimization+netplay on top of seperate singleplayer mode that further accentuates the basics of gameplay. seeing that definitely makes me hope for the chance of a future quake game grabbing the spot light for similar reasons, but at least the population is still active enough and i still have a lot of fun even when killers are handing me defeats left and right

Thanks Frothy, this was something I needed to hear. I've been playing Quake Champions since the beta release, but have been frustrated by my lack of understanding and failure in the game. I (believe I) have a fair understanding of the mechanics, but sometimes (in fact a lot of times) I get into battles and think "what went wrong!?" and I really don't know. Certainly had quite a few spells away from QC (personal issues) which means I have forgotten a lot of the things I have picked up. Trying again with the new patch and a bit of the old one. Headaches a plenty still to come I'm sure.

Just play the game lots. Literally had no clue how to play the game on the first opening of it, took it like any other fps. 3 games of losing later, you work out how each weapon works, how to switch between them, and you're good to go. I'm still probably terrible at the game, but at least I'm enjoying it now :)
