My brother Toni moved in Qualicum from Edmonton in1982 after a life of work many times at the great North (OIL). I came on visit in 1985 - 89 - 91 so are very beautiful reminds for me to watch this movie. I know Shady Rest, we had many drinks !! Toni was an italian immigrant from 1955, he passed away in '92, so I can't come again on visit and I must remain in Italy. Hello to Qualicum and everybody over there. - Lucio

What a wonderful video of Qualicum Beach during the late 1940's and early 50's. ,My Grandmother first brought me to QB in 1948--an annual summer treat that I enjoyed with 10 Aunts and Uncles---and 9 Cousins. Our family group stayed in a number of small cabins"(I believe they were called the Grandview Cabins), on the opposite side of the road, and just down from the Shady Rest. Over the years I recall the back yards of these cabins getting smaller and smaller, as the result of the cliff along the bank slowly moving down towards the Highway. The Cabins were under serious threat from the continuing deterioration of the cliff--and eventually all of the cabins were destroyed or condemned. My Father (Vern) was in the RCAF (Comox) and spent significant time in Alaska and the Aleutians during WWII. Bus transportation to Victoria, was not optimal during those years. He frequently mentioned in his letters to my Mother that he would be hitch-hiking down to Victoria---and stopping off at the Shady Rest for lunch or dinner! In later years my two Sons---always enjoyed their summer vacations at QB! Now I am retired----and guess what?!..six years ago I moved up Island to----guess where?----QB! YAHOO!!!! Actually the Parksville to Courtenay (and Desolation Sound) are two of the few places, north of San Luis Obispo, Ca, that you can swim in the Pacific Ocean. So enjoy!

When the Grilse ran that larger fish would pretty well have to be a Spring Salmon, not a Coho, but what would your expect from someone from Victoria.

I think that might have been the view platform at the ex-Crescent Motel on, of course, West Crescent Road. To the North was the corner just before Ben Bow Inn, and the south view was Judges Row. Was that not somewhere North of above the Snow White Motel?

Qualicum Wilson the Snow White Motel was right next to the Shady property. Gerald Kinkade was my grandfather. I grew up for the first 10 years of my life living in the house directly across from the Shady. Watching this video is definitely a trip!
