Adding drops of sodium hydroxide solution can help identify cations present in a solution. Some cations will not form a precipitate so they will be identified by the flame test while others can form a white or a colored precipitate.

When Ca2+ is added to NaOH slaked lime is formed but it is not a precipitate it is a suspension which is commonly called milk of lime.

To make 1 N solution, dissolve 40.00 g of sodium hydroxide in water to make volume 1 liter. For a 0.1 N solution (used for wine analysis) 4.00 g of NaOH per liter is needed.
