QUALITY NIGHT STRIPED BASS FISHING - STRIPERS with RED EYE SUPER STRIKE NEEDLEFISH. Good quality striper fishing any time of year, anywhere, is what I made of the night. The surf fishing was slow yet steady with quality fish and riddled with loss, gain, discouragement, redemption and hope. All the later make a quality night fishing. The night started with feeling traffic on the line and a shad on the teaser. A few casts later a 30" keeper striped bass took the needle and landed. Many more casts in and feeling traffic I had a tremendous fish I estimate to be a 30-40 pound class picked up the needlefish fought well and earned his place back in the cold clear deep waters after the great fish rightfully shook the needle. I was momentarily discouraged and the same pattern repeat itself as hope appeared and hooked into a 34-36" striped bass a good one for what the fishing been in the area. Many more casts, the pattern ceased, a long walk back followed by my thoughts, and here they appear.

Been working the Super Strike Needlefish a bit this year on the beach for striped bass. The needle fish is a super awesome fun lure to use. I keep different sizes and styles to cater to the surf fishing needs and have another needlefish video in the works. This night on the surf I thought a heavy black red eye SS Needlefish was perfect to condition - fast sweeping water, 15-MPH winds and potential fish far out off the sand bar. A heavy faster sinking and fast rising needle fish is perfect for these conditions especially when the fish are ranging. When working any needlefish close to and off the bottom it is important you find a needle fish that gets to bottom and rises almost on its own. If your dragging sand or cranking fast to get off the bottom your fishing too heavy. There are many retrieves you can use and a fast steady is one but not for this night. Night I like the needlefish to work its own magic and let them tantalizingly do a dance on there own off the bottom with a tad of a slack line belly and very very slight retrieve. A second favourite is the rise pause drop or any combination of such. Lots of ways I work them but these ideas are dominant and should be incorporated in any theme. Contrary to popular belief sandeels need not be around and striped bass will take a needle at night willingly if stripers are around. The important part is you use the correct needle fish. We are always happy to share our experiences with all those around the world and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it.
