Quantum Entangled Twisted Tubules: When we draw a sine wave on a blackboard, we are representing spatial curvature. Does a photon transfer spatial curvature from one location to another? Wrap a piece of wire around a pencil and it can produce a 3D coil of wire, much like a spring. When viewed from the side it can look like a two-dimensional sine wave. You could coil the wire with either a right-hand twist, or with a left-hand twist. Could Planck's Constant be proportional to the twist cycles. A photon with a higher frequency has more energy. (More spatial curvature). What if gluons are actually made up of these twisted tubes which become entangled with other tubes to produce quarks. (In the same way twisted electrical extension cords can become entangled.) Therefore, the gluons are actually a part of the quarks. Mesons are made up of two entangled tubes (Quarks/Gluons), while protons and neutrons would be made up of three entangled tubes. (Quarks/Gluons) The "Color Force" would be related to the XYZ coordinates (orientation) of entanglement. "Asymptotic Freedom", and "flux tubes" make sense based on this concept. Neutrinos would be made up of a twisted torus (like a twisted donut) within this model. Gravity is a result of a very small curvature imbalance within atoms. (This is why the force of gravity is so small.) Instead of attempting to explain matter as "particles", this concept attempts to explain matter more in the manner of our current understanding of the space-time curvature of gravity. If an electron has qualities of both a particle and a wave, it cannot be either one. It must be something else. Therefore, a "particle" is actually a structure which stores spatial curvature. Can an electron-positron pair (which are made up of opposite directions of twist) annihilate each other by unwinding into each other producing Gamma Ray photons. Does an electron travel through space like a threaded nut traveling down a threaded rod, with each twist cycle proportional to Planck’s Constant? Does it wind up on one end, while unwinding on the other end? Is this related to the Higgs field? Does this help explain the strange ½ spin of many subatomic particles? Alpha decay occurs when the two protons and two neutrons (which are bound together by entangled tubes), become un-entangled from the rest of the nucleons . Beta decay occurs when the tube of a down quark/gluon in a neutron becomes overtwisted and breaks producing a twisted torus (neutrino) and an up quark, and the ejected electron. The phenomenon of Supercoiling involving twist and writhe cycles may reveal how overtwisted quarks can produce these new particles. The conversion of twists into writhes, and vice-versa, is an interesting process. Gamma photons are produced when a tube unwinds producing electromagnetic waves.

Just a few remarks: the prof keeps mentioning pion as the mediator of the *strong nuclear force* but in fact it only mediates the *residual* nuclear force (or sometimes known only as "the nuclear force"). The strong force is mediated by gluons, a spin 1 particle that is definitely not repulsive as it's claimed to be on the slide at 22:00 This got me a bit puzzled. Did I perhaps misunderstand him or something?

I have two of Zee's books and the contrast is striking. For General Relativity he's all "don't worry, it's not that hard, i will help you as much as i can every step of the way". For Quantum Field Theory he's all "if you don't know this, you shouldn't be here."

As far as (American) history goes, Professor Zee is probably quite familiar with around the late 1970s / early 1980s CBS's Sixty Minutes running segments on new PhD theoretical physicists who were forced to be taxi drivers. Experimental physicists evolved to be super-skilled in computer data analysis, so they were instantly employable in very lucrative fields such as Wall Street if physics did not work out for them.

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards this all being a simulation with the weirdness at the quantum scale merely being the result of a physics engine approximating things at a scale that doesn't really matter much when rendering the macro scale in order to save memory and processing power. After all, if one existed inside a simulation that truncated/rounded off things at the quantum scale, then things would definitely appear to be statistical based. Black holes and other such oddities would simply be artifacts created as a consequence of an imprecise rendering method. It would even explain the double slit easily. To save memory, particles are held as wave functions until specific information is needed. Once the info has been processed, the resulting particle would then go back to being stored as a wave function. The interference pattern etc. created when not being "looked at" could also just be an artifact created by the engine cutting corners. Long story short, the weirdness and complications of physics at the quantum scale may simply be unintelligible in the end as it's merely the result of an incomplete rendering method to begin with. One would need to be outside the simulation in order to actually work out how things function.

Strangely enough, although calculus is beyond the level of math instruction I've received, I've watched Feinman's lectures online enough that I'm pretty sure I understand the path integral concept, even though I can't currently do the math myself. It's kinda' an intuitive understanding, from a photographer's POV, once he mapped out on the chalkboard the example of how convex lenses work, to focus and concentrate light, after taking all possible path's probability amplitudes into account.

How can one be smart and compassionate.

Physicists. Imagine trying to calculate the energy density needed to manifest a neutron from vacuum. Is proton easier to manifest or since it has charge values to overcome it would require antimatter version to offset. Whereas since neutron is neutral the only things are phase/spin related. And if there was pair production they would cancel and it takes almost no energy to create a neutron pair?

Zee’s correct in saying that many “theoretical physicists” these days don’t understand quantum theory. I say many are rejecting QM with false arguments. The best source for QFT is Feynman’s books. He was also a great lecturer, explaining tough concepts simply, not in a demeaning silly way that is also incorrect. Sadly there’s some of that in this lecture.

there probably is no such thing as the conservation of energy....we need to think that there is in order to do our calculations and set up our theories....but nobody knows where energy comes from or where it goes, we just say that its an axiom that energy is conserved because we find it to be congenial to our logic
