After the smash success of CASINO ROYALE, EON wanted to strike when the iron was hot and immediately launched into production on the second Daniel Craig James Bond movie, QUANTUM OF SOLACE. For the first time in the franchise's history, it would be a direct sequel to the previous installment, with it picking up immediately where the last film left off. Directed by MONSTER'S BALL's Marc Forster, the film was obviously influenced by the BOURNE IDENTITY movies and was hampered by a writer's guild strike. The result is an episodic entry, where the script only exists to bridge together a lot of bone-crushing action, albeit marred by too much quick cutting and no sense of geography.
Hated by many fans, we've gone back and taken a look at this divisive installment, which features Olga Kurylenko, Gemma Arterton, Mathieu Amalric, and more. Is it as bad as its reputation suggests? Check out this latest installment of James Bond Revisited!

The only good thing about the movie is that Bond is an actual, competent spy for a change. The whole sequence with the opera, if I recall. He doesn't go around telling everyone his name for once, and he actually propels the plot himself instead of stumbling into everything through luck.

@@terryf6696 I remember my friends and I played a lot of Arkham Horror around the time this movie came out. After we saw it, we noticed that everyone who gets close to him dies and every time there's an action scene he travels. So we made a character for the game based on James Bond, and if any other player ended their turn in the same location as him they had to roll to see if they died from being too close. Also, whenever he was involved in combat, he rolled a die to see how many spaces he traveled while fighting.

I don’t know why but the David Harbour character reminded me of one of the two henchmen from Diamonds Are Forever. It’s not a bad movie at all. I think it actually complements Casino and Daniel Craig just makes the whole thing work. He sealed the deal as Bond ensuring Casino wasn’t a fluke. One thing I wished they had done was use the original books to use as a guide starting from Casino and going through Live and Let Die and Moonraker etc.

Ok, I might be the only one but I really like this movie. It's by a long shot my favourite Craig movie. I find it entertaining and engaging and it has some call backs to Brosnan movies which are my favourite, so I don't agree that it doesn't feel like a Bond. It's the most Bond of all the Craig's movies. But hey, I know it's just me but I just wanted to throw a bit of love for this movie. This is the only Craig movie I actually rewatched a few times and I might revisit it soon as it's given me a taste for it. There we go, don't hate me, just showing some love ☺️
@jeffreyrigged
@jeffreyrigged 3 года назад
probably my second favorite craig film honestly. i mean its the most character development you had on any james bond flick. i think the lack of love is just because its a dark depressing movie. its not lets save the world and bang the girl in the end with a one liner. its a very angry and sad man that just lost the one thing that matters to him. the only thing he sleeps with is more like rebound just to feel like hes human and she dies a horrible death. he is blinded by revenge through the film to much to see whats going on with the water even. its only when he breaks down in the caves to get whats really is going on with the water. as for the villian i honestley feel like that hes the most realistic villian of any. hes not running around with henchman with laser beams and he is ceo in the pocket of a politician standing to make alot of money so basically elon musk lol. as for the shakey cam people flip out over it but me i dont mind it i mean it makes you feel like you are imersed into the action so i dont mind it.
@terryf6696

@@jeffreyrigged Totally agree. Great analysis. I will say that even though it's dark it's very entertaining, unlike CR which is also dark and not a bad movie but it's pretty drab which is why I'd rewatch Quantum but not CR. And yeah, I don't need a camp villain with over the top henchmen.
@garrick3727
@garrick3727 3 года назад
Yes I prefer this film to all Craig's others, and I can rewatch it no problem, whereas Casino Royale and Skyfall have parts that are hard for me to get through. The Bond film this reminds me of the most is License To Kill, which is another revenge story. When LTK came out people complained that it was not very Bond-like, but these days most people seem to like it.
@terryf6696
@terryf6696 3 года назад
@@garrick3727 Yes, the theme is indeed very LTK, the commenter above made me think of that too with the revenge thing. But also my throw back to Brosnan is the partnership with a strong bond girl, the action and the active spying with events falling into one another. CR and especially SF are very bitty with their plot (I really didn't like Skyfall from the first viewing, it made no sense, Bond is completely lost). Again, I'm glad other people appreciate the same aspects of this movie as I do.
@jeffreyrigged
@jeffreyrigged 3 года назад
@@garrick3727 i agree it has some ltk aspect with him also we see alot of ohmss and thunderball in there. i really enjoyed the darker bond films i guess. thunderball you really got to see a darker side of bond for the first time. while there isnt a bond film i didnt like its nice to see a more real human person there. lald you saw a bit more of this human bond too prob the most roger moore film wise. alot of the bond films glorify secret agent life kinda like a pirate movie or western in the 50s without painting the whole picture. yes bond has all kinds of gadgets drives super cars dresses in the best and pulls down random women all the time and that sounds great until you flip the coin. in reality its a lonely life without any freedom. alot of the people he cares about die around him. he has to go missing to get away. he can never leave the life and mantain his identity. its almost like a life in organized crime. no family and anyone you befriend or love becomes a target. after a while no amount of random tail high dollar drinks and driving around in super car is going to make up for that. in truth bond should be desensitized to everything and almost dead inside only worried about getting his job done or self gratification however really longing for more but scared to. thats qos bond to me. i really wish they would have stayed with this path.

Quantum Of Solace has one of the most badass opening scenes (and my favorite) of the franchise, with Bond being pursued in a car chase while having Mr. White in his trunk. The only negative is the constant jump-cuts. The editing is horrible in the scene, and it becomes hard to see what the hell is happening at times because of it.

I wonder what we would have gotten without the Writer's Strike. I see this one as a not reaching a potential that was on par with Casino Royale because of the strike. @Ugly_German_Truths
@Ugly_German_Truths 3 года назад
Not a bad description actually... after all Casino Royale is also not a typical Bond Movie and deliberately so as it was meant as this "hard reboot" with the license to Kill subject and all... too bad they squandered the potential of that situation by only badly following up on it with QoS dated too close to CR and it not really being a main concern any longer in Skyfall. If you felt disappointed by the change in concept from CR you would not be too hot on Quantum either. And vice versa, if Casino was YOUR Bond, for whatever reason ;P then Quantum would be very satisfying.
@harrysecombegroupie
@harrysecombegroupie 2 года назад
I always think of QoS as a character study disguised as an action movie. It has a satisfying character arc of Bond finding a way out of the pain, rage, and vengeance after Vespers death and I really like how visceral and violent it is. Bond is so damn angry here and there's a kind of poetry to the violence, an expression of Bond's inner state. The plot is messy and there's some terrible editing, but it gets the emotions and the character right in a way that the later films don't

The coldness in him especially the end is amazing, and I think perfectly on point, couple that with the scene of him comforting Olga (mirroring Casino Royale with Vesper in the shower) and the Opera scene. There are some elements to love, but getting there is a chore which is a shame. A few remarks : - In my opinion, "Another Way to Die" is a great song : the guitar riff combined with the machine-gun trompets bring a grandiose and powerful melody. It's one of the only positive thing I recall from this sequel. - Glad you mentioned Olga's acting. She's a very underused /underrated actress and it's cool to hear her praise. It's just a bit decepointing to hear you conclude on her looks. regardless, love ya

Quantum of Solace is a flawed movie, sure, but it is also an underrated one. It has surprisingly realistic plot elements and offers a more psychological take on the series. Bond in QoS is not a cartoon character, he is more human with vengence and despair driving him throughout a movie. It is basically a revenge movie, although with strong melancholic undertones. An atypical entry in the series, but I would probably place it in the middle of the 5 films with Daniel Craig.

Quantum of Solace's rampant, quick cut action ably renders to the audience Bond's vengeance fueled, chaotic mental state. While Montes remains the only(?) Bond woman who not only earns Bond's respect he shows genuine empathy for her sans the normally prerequisite misogyny. And the stripping out of all sound during key heightened moments--except for David Arnold's grand score--was highly stylized (and very cool) for 2008. Weak villains/plot aside, I consider this a worthy and daring sequel to Casino Royale. I wish more Bond films took chances like this.

Seriously, I truly enjoyed this film and I consider it to be the BEST of the four films. Period. And I am a LONG lived Bond fan. I loved the gritty determination, the best opening title sequence of all four Craig films, and in this movie, it made complete sense story wise as to why it was more of a pursuit/fast paced movie considering how angry he was and out for blood/revenge for the literal torture he was put through in Casino Royale. I found out quite later in time that this film is considered the weakest of the four. I think somebody who didn't "get it" poopoo'd it and this got picked up by others and everyone jumped on the "follow the crowd". I think your assessment is false, I think you were influenced by the type of people you saw the film with. For the first time ever watching your videos, I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment.

I *loved* this one. But I've been aware of lots of hate for it in the last few years, and so I sometimes think, "Hmm, maybe I would think of it differently if I saw it again." Then I remember I've seen it 8 times, lol. I won't insist I have good taste, but I will say that the movie wasn't hated (at least not widely) when it came out, except by critics. There was a huge divide between critics and audiences, in fact. Maybe one reason audiences enjoyed it was because this was a bad year for movies (until the last month). I remember one person saying online: "It's nice to have fun going to the movies again."

I remember hearing rumours that Jack White always wanted to make a Bond theme song and that the riff of Seven Nation Army was supposed to be for one but he ended making an original song instead, then eventually of course he would have his shot with another day to die. For me this one's like Madonna's Another Day to Die, great song, not so much a Bond theme.

I pretty much agreed with everything you said about this film. I actually enjoyed it when I first saw in theater back 2008 but after watching a few more times in later years, I didn't really like it as much. The action scenes were just too chaotic, the only action sequence I thought was descent was the climatic shootout and fight. I had no idea what's going on during the boat and plane chase sequences.

QoS had all the elements of a great Craig Bond film. It just needed the script refined to get there. Skyfall falls apart as soon as you start thinking about it. It's dumb and pretentious and self-indulgent and the glaring problems of Spectre are a continuation of that.

This has to be the first James Bond Revisited that I entirely disagree with. The Bond girl, Kurylenko, is a brilliant and refreshing change and suited the stile of a sequel perfectly! In fact, so far, all of Daniel Craig's appearances as 007 have been one giant character ark, with each film adding to the big picture. This is by far the best Bond we have had IMO. The villain is a weasel, you just want to destroy him the entire time, and he plays this so well and it really satisfying in the end when he gets his just deserts. Whilst I agree woth your score analysis, I disagree with the theme song. This is post bly the most rememberal opening James Bond song, and Jack White and Alicia Keys absolutely compliment each other and also set the setting for the film, and really let you know what you're in store for. But this is all just my opinion. I loved it, it was certainly not as 'James Bondy' however it definitely was, as a continuation and character ark.

Loved it when it came out and love it still. Great, lean sequel to the better (but long) Casino Royale. QoS showed a bitter, ruthless Bond (like Dalton), strong female characters, villains that are realistic and some great action like the opera scene and Siena chase. Spectre remains the lowpoint of the Craig era for me, hope they bounce back with the new one. Director's choice gives good hope.

First of all, "not knowing what the hell is going on" should never be an argument for a movie critic. Secondly, people seemed to berate this movie for *not* being a Bond movie, which is silly. I like it *because* it tries to break away a little from the formula. Granted, it's an acquired taste, but this one should always be seen as a companion piece to Casino Royale. Watched back to back, QoS makes a lot more sense. Plus, the title song rocks!

Unpopular opinion: Watch Casino Royale and Quantum as one movie, and they are, as a pair, much more fulfilling than Skyfall (which works best as its own). The action in Quantum could be less and better, but sneeky Greene and his "water" plot (which is a scary concept in real life and one to be talked about more) are pretty underrated.

Olga Kurylenko's "Camille Montes" character may be an attempt to combine the two hot Bond girls in Licence To Kill (1989) -- "Pam Bouvier" (Cary Lowell) and "Lupe Lamora" (Talisa Soto). Or maybe Jolene Blalock's "T'Pol" character in Star Trek: Enterprise (2001) was the inspiration for "Camille".

QoS blows the shit plotting of Skyfall out of the water. It’s a barebones spy thriller with an ironclad C-story that’s a continuation from the previous film. Draws on everything from Chinatown to Borne, the old and the new. One of the only times Bond “going rogue” at all makes sense. Because of the anger over Vesper that still seethes beneath the surface he is needlessly brutal, killing an agent from special branch, so M tries to shut him down. It’s all fluid and would fit in one of the older films. I think Skyfall is the most self-indulgent and certainly one of the most badly written Bond films ever shot, and Casino Royals is the opposite. QoS is a solid #2 in the Craig series for me.
@harrysecombegroupie
@harrysecombegroupie 2 года назад
I agree with everything here and it's so gratifying to hear someone else say it. QoS has all the elements of a great Craig Bond film, it just needed the script refined to get it there. It has a depth and emotional logic and a satisfying character arc for Bond. Skyfall is just so dumb, hollow, and pretentious. There's nothing of depth going on in it and that makes it boring. Which is a damn shame because Casino Royale and QoS feel like origin stories, setting us up to see the fully formed James Bond, ready to get down to the real adventures in the third film. Then Skyfall tossed out that character arc and rebooted him as depressed Batman, with a contrived origin story and cartoon villain. Skyfall is not only a crap film, it's also the reason we barely got to see this version of James Bond actually being James Bond, and it's infuriating. People were shocked that the same director who made the supposedly great Skyfall could make the stinker that was Spectre, but I wasn't surprised at all. Skyfall is almost as bad, but it's just not as obvious.
