Six Ecossaises, WoO 83 by Ludvig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
I submitted this video for a virtual concert hosted by the Association of Adule Musicians with Hearing Loss (AAMHL) to commemorate Beethoven's 250th birthday. The concert was held on Friday, December 18th at 8pm
The Écossaise is a Scottish country dance that was popular in France and Great Brittain at the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th. Despite the Écossaise mimicking a Scottish country dance, it is actually French in origin. It was danced in 2/4 time by a double line of couples, men facing women. As the dance is executed, the couples progressed to the head of the line.
These compositions were mainly written for solo piano so that couples could dance to it. Those who composed these types of works included not only Beethoven but also Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828), Carl Maria von Weber (1786 - 1826) and Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
