@@Nigel.123 John the Baptist did not fulfill (in full) the prophecies of the coming "Elijah", and Jesus' statements that there was a future fulfillment (in the passages I listed) was after John was already dead. As John was a forerunner before Christ's first advent, so God has foretold of a forerunner before His return ("to restore all things"). As it is Written so it shall be. grace and peace

@@suzanholland In the very next verse in Matthew 11 (verse 12), Jesus said John the Baptist is the fulfillment of Malachi's prophecy about Elijah. He says much the same in the next verse in Mark 9. God bless.

@@Nigel.123 what He said was to confirm that "Elijah came first" in the sense of John the Baptist being a forerunner (of His first advent) while affirming that there is a yet-future fulfillment as well--the Jews had not understood the dual nature of the messianic prophecies, and in Malachi the end times fulfillment is clear: "before the great and terrible day of YHVH" i.e. before His second advent. Sadly, much of the church has been making the same mistakes as "Israel". Jesus stated that the Elijah to come would "restore all things" and that is certainly not what John did. John certainly did restore all things: He was the last Old Testament prophet, he put an end to the Old Testament system of animal sacrifices, and pointed to Jesus as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
