I love watching this I also watch the gardening with trellises clips that they have on RU-vid but I watch this more because his voice is very mellow and it relaxes you as you watch it and I used to just read Google news on my phone but it has gotten so stupid lately who wants to know about an earring some Queen is wearing and is making his fashion statement oh please that is not important what is important is God and surviving in the terrible government we have these days.
The grain display by this cut was pretty but was a rift cut. Angle of growth rings to board surface was 30 to 60 degrees. If half log had been cut in half the first 3 to 4 boards off when rotating the face would has had growth rings at 60 to 90 degrees to the surface -- quarter sawn wood !!!
I know where there is a 5 ft thick black walnut on the ground for years now and a 4 foot thick black walnut still standing next to the 5 ft thick one...it is in the blountville tennessee area and may b for sale as most things are! These trees are blacker than black....a dream with 30 ft plus trunks....
Nate, you’re the man brother. I’ve been watching you for at least five years and I’m finally about to a start milling myself. You’ve been very informative and we both talk funny, which makes it even better 😄
We live in an old Juglans Hindsii, NorCal Black Walnut, orchard. So I bought a mill. I've milled 3 logs about 18-20" dia and 5-9 ft long. and I pulled the root/stumps. WOW. Never saw such roots, monsters. I'm going to cut down a neigbors tree, it's trunk is 10" long and straight and 20"dia. I'm waiting until November. Leaves are dropping now... Is it possible to cut, say, the top 1/3 and quarter saw it and slab the rest? Is there a way do slabs and quarter saw? I really like slabbing. the figure and color of northern calif black walnut is the cats meow
Love this, I'll show it to my high school woodshop classes. I do tree work on the weekends, bring the wood in to mill and we build projects from the logs we mill.
I've built many tables using quarter sawn oak. I've never use quarter sawn walnut. It has a beautiful grain to it. Thanks for sharing this video with us !!!
Quarter sawn wood tends to resist warping more than slab cut wood. It is also preferred by musical instrument makes for better tonal quality. Nice looking stuff.
Народ, кто по русски говорит, объясните что они делают и как с такой неодинаковой доской? Понятно почему пилит этот сектор , но доска то вся разная . С разными краями?
EVERYBODY Do not hit the mute button! When Nathan says he's excited it's usually followed by a backflip! You'll lose the entire effect if muted! Lol Nathan's the best
What do you use for lube for the blade? I am wondering if you are using possibly diesel or kerosene for your dryer hardwoods. I use diluted dish soap with water for my Wet pine but with the dry hardwoods it doesn't seem to work so well. I would appreciate any input on blade lubrication and the amount of lube that you use thank you and I very much enjoy your Chanel.
I would put it in the "if it's not broke, don't fix it category". Fun experiment but it already turns out so well just sawing it standard. You're not picking up any medullary rays like with oak
Beautiful and informative as usual. I have a trailer load of pecan to saw , have you ever sawn any or do you have any any advice. This will be my first time with it, also I'm going look at some hickory soon, advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Nathan
+Jody Martin thanks Jody. Pecan is the brother to hickory. If you can it’s best to quarter saw it did to it’s drying difficulties. Likes to move a lot when drying Thanks for watching! Also saw it soon. It gets harder fast as it sits after harvesting.
Out of the Woods Thanks I'll get right on it. I been meaning to ask but I keep forgetting. What model Stihl are you feeling with and do you have a preferred angle on the chain grind.
A cant hook or cant dog is a traditional logging tool consisting of a wooden lever handle with a movable metal hook called a dog at one end, used for handling and turning logs and cants, especially in sawmills. Wikipedia Long story short, a CANT is the piece of wood being moved by the hook.
