“We’re disappointed to see that the English-speaking community was not part of the solution,” said Sylvia Martin-Laforge, Director General for QCGN about Quebec’s $603M to protect the French language. Brittany Henriques reports.
I no longer speak Saxon or Old Norse. My neighbors don't require that we set aside a hundred million bucks so they can continue to be assured that Greek will be part of the court system and so that there is no drop in the number of Greek-Canadians whose children and grand-children will speak Greek. French was the main language of one group of Canadians who became Canada in 1867. It is not a license to remain a source of special status for all eternity. Language is a tool for living. That's all it is.
@@geoplanetaire Yeah, no kidding. But if you`re French and you hate your own language, wouldn`t you find that strange ? I would. To each their own...I know some people enjoy certain aspects of self-hatred, but I don`t. Live and let live.
If Quebec doesn't want me an English speaking Canadian to have my language rights in their province. Fine with me ... I won't be spending another dime in that Province. Now if I can get the Federal government to stop transferring my tax dollars to them, all will be good.
As an english speaking canadian, you have your all your language rights. That was never an issue and stop acting like you have rights that you don't have. Also, YES PLEASE STOP TRANSFERRING US MONEY. We'll stop paying federal taxes, which will prove once and for all that Quebec does not need Canada for it's economical survival and we'll likely be able to separate quickly.
It's not just about private in public areas we hear a bunch of different languages in Montreal when we should only be hearing French in Public period. If you want to speak another language go back to your country we don't want you.
What a colossal waste of money. This country needs housing and education more than to care about what language is being spoken. Completely ridiculous priorities.
In Canada approximately 22.8% of the population speak French as their first language, in the USA about 0.06%. Therefore, for any young person venturing beyond the province of Quebec, speaking English is essential. To deny French children from learning to speak English is very limiting for their growth, education & potential. Only 71.2% of quebecers are first language francophones.
Are you heard of something called Europe? And also, french children learn english from grade 2. By the time a person having done all of their education gets their CEGEP diploma (which is the last level where there are obligatory english courses), they'll at minimum be able to speak english just fine 90% of the time.
@@petegrizwald2666 Not really. Most of the immigrants come from the Maghreb, Haiti, and Sub-Saharan countries where they already speak French. Now for the French Quebecers "de souche" , they do care very much. You`re misinformed.
Wonder how many MRi, x ray, ultrasound, operating rooms, doctor and nursing school rooms, or ER rooms could be built with that instead of telling people to speak more French..
wow....rising food and rent costs and people struggling finding jobs and these muppets want to spend all this money. Im all for French language...but this is just wasteful use of money.
I would rather see more doctors. It also sucks to drive by the Hull Hospital to go the Civic in Ottawa so I won't risk dying in the waiting room. Although I've lived most of my life in Ontario, I shouldn't be their problem now.
Are franco quebecois happy about this? Quebec has the worst doctor shortage in the country, 1 in 3 quebecers don't have a doctor, me included. Its such a waste of money.
The SPANISH FROM SOUTH AMERICA CENTRAL AMERICA AND CHINESE WILL ALSO. Oh all the AFRICANS WILL ALSO SPEAK FRENCH AT HOME. ?????????????????????????????
...because there are no other problems like for instance lack of medical care in QC...People are going to speak french in french speaking homes they are not going all of the sudden switch to english and vice versa no matter what so what are you really planing to do with the money?
If the language use goes down, it’s because people don’t want to use it, simple as that. Don’t use equity mandates to force it on those that don’t want it.
I used to live in Quebec for over 20 years. It is not protection of French language, but protection of White Quebec identity. Honestly, it is the most racist province in Canada
Yes.... so racist.....welcoming vast numbers of Haitians, Africans, Hispanics, Jamaicans, Arabs, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodians. Does that sound racist you ignoramus ?
Agreed. I'm from Quebec but my mom was born in France. I went to elementary school in St-Chrysotôme and I was the only one with an English(irish) last name. Not to mention that there were no other ethnicities in that town at the time (90's) I was constantly teased and still to this day living in Montreal I'm told that I'm more"english" by Quebeckers whatever that means. I'm perfectly bilingual with no accent. and I'm currently in the process of learning Spanish. A lot of Quebekers are idiots and bigots.
You got it! The more French is emphasized as the only language there should be, the more francophone Quebecers are stuck in Quebec at the mercy of these politicians.
@catherinewilson1079 Funny how they manage to imbue the population with a sense of pride about it. The closest thing I've seen lately, looking similar, is the 1970-80 Arab Nationalism. Ironically, they'd probably hate my comparison.
People will communicate in which ever way it makes their lives easy. You can’t force people to speak any language not just French. Unfortunately all of this money goes back in the pockets of the politicians. I much rather see this amount go towards making living more affordable in Quebec. We pay some of the highest taxes and interest rates.
so sad if only learning new language is easy, unfortunately average people like me isnt easy and my priority is to build a safer financial stability on my part so i cant afford learning french while working full time. i have no choice but to leave quebec if only they can allow english as the second language but idk why its like christians vs muslim on that notion that the latter really wants to be dominant to the other.
Well, English-speaking communities, this is how state racism tastes like. Hopefully we can come up with a better 'Charter of Rights' that can protect us all.
"English" is not a race. Also, you have all of your rights, you can't just decide like that "Oh I want more rights". That's just your colonial biases that expect that you shouldn't accomodate, we should.
This is the same province where you could find Brian Mulroney's nose during the Meech Lake fiasco. He almost got away with permanently enshrining such treatment by giving Quebec distinct society status in perpetuity. But I guess he always was in reality the PM for Quebec, not the PM of Canada.
You guys don't even speak French that anywhere else in the world recognizes. If people are naturally moving to English then keep your culture and let the people live the way they want
We do? We just have regionalisms, we're kinda like Australia in that sense. Also, the culture is in french, we can't protect the culture without protecting the language. Oh and people are allowed to live how they want, the only place where french is forced is work.
More studies and survey must do and check the last 25 years of how many mixed marriages are are in Quebec like French no longer marry French but other nationalities so their is a second language spoken at home, simple. Legault never seen this coming that the French language is no longer needed in Quebec homes. Stop dividing Quebecers in a Canadian province with Canadian dollars 💵 simple… Legault is spending our money for his pleasures 😢
@@MrJimmysez And your guess would be completely wrong because I don`t write crazy comments like you do. Huge difference. I hope you can understand the difference but then again you sound somewhat extreme, so....
You want to hear a good one? A quebec based company in Ahuntsic actually makes the BEST ROADS for winter/all weather countries/cities and exports the technology and work to places like Norway, finland, greenland, etc. Quebec doesn’t work with them. That’s one example but it’s kind of a crazy one considering 600M that isn’t in road infrastructure and bridge safety. Not including the state of hospital care here lol. BUT, this video is about language and this is a tad off topic.
Quebec took in over 50% of the immigrants in Canada. They will have people from countries that speak English . This is so disgusting I want to leave this province . I’ve been going through this English-French debate in Quebec since I was a teenager and moved out of Quebec. I moved back for my mom but cut off all attachment from it .
And this is why provinces should no longer send money to Ottawa, his is what happens with taxpayer money from other provinces, it is given to Quebec for bs like this
Pierre Trudeau imposed bilingualism the people were never asked if they wanted it same with multiculturalism, LGBTQ stuff etc cause the govt already knows what the answer will be
Most of it is going to the monitoring and enforcing of the absolutely ridiculous language laws. A tiny fraction of it is allocated to 'increasing the French cultural offering'. So basically all the money to bullying everyone into slang French and almost none of it to actually making it more appealing and enjoyable to learn.
Slightly. We recieved 13 billions and paid 6 billions, so we really only recieved 7 billions, which is 1.5% of our GDP. So you paid for 11 millions of the program. Uh, thanks I guess. We could have easily afforded thar ourselves but thanks for the change.
@@Alex-qk1rf arabs family in Quebec have 5 or more kids. Meanwhile, a broken french speaking irish québécois has 2 dads or just 1 or 2 kids. Looks like Islam is on a mission here

Actually, 1763 with the french and indian war. Also, english people exploited french Canadians as cheap labor and lower class citizens until the quiet revolution in the 60's.
Trying to force this upon people makes them do it less.. just because these politicians personally think the stats aren’t good enough doesn’t mean there losing there culture identity. Hospitals, homelessness, food programs could use that money for better.
603 MILLION $ to save FRENCH ????????? IF YOU NEED THAT MUCH DOES IT DISERVE TO BE SAVED.OUT OF CURIOSITY WHAT MEASURES DO THEY INTEND TO DO.. AT HOME WE SPEAK WHAT WE WANT.
@lawrenceveinotte Your family stopped speaking French as soon as you got off the boat, because the Veinots were imported into NS by BRITISH Protestant Governor Cornwallis. The Veinots were Protestant (French Huguenots). Your family arrived a couple of years before the British rounded up all the Catholic Acadians in 1755. Cornwallis persecuted them because they were French Catholics who wished to remain neutral. They also owned large amounts of land that Cornwallis and his cronies wanted for themselves. French speaking Acadians had all their lands and livestock stolen from them. Women and children were separated from the men, forced onto British ships and sent into exile. Many died at sea or from exposure and famine in British colonies or sold into slavery. The French Acadian Expulsion was your family’s gain, Mr. Veinotte. Therefore, it comes as no surprise why the French language (or anything French for that matter) wouldn’t interest you.
@@loup-deau yes, the classic brainwashing education of Quebec. Like the English wealthy settlers never existed which took over the "Royal Mont". Also what has been happening to the English names area in Montreal? Like example "Boulevard Dorchester"

@@bling0rb007 Royal Mont is literally just an english deformation of Mont Royal. Also, Guy Carleton wasn't really important to Quebec in comparison to René Lévesque, even if I agree that they could have chosen a better street to rename.
@@loup-deau what's wrong with Royal Mont? Guy was not a part of Quebec's history? Why are the schools teaching French from France instead of Quebec French (Quebecois)? Why does the native language and the English history are being erased? Why doesn't Quebec have the freedom of competitive private schools? For a moment, it sounded more like China when it comes to language restrictions.
@@Faize Quebec wanted to be it's own country because Trudeau's daddy was running the show. Funny how that's an occurring thing. French has always been Canada's second language and has been taught in public and private schools throughout Canada. Not just Quebec. I'm not from Quebec.

What is causing the decline of the French language and culture in Quebec and across the country? The answer is immigration without integration - it’s too much, too fast - and it’s wreaking havoc. Justin, a French Quebecer and WEF member, is pushing all these mass immigration policies. Throwing money at this issue, without addressing the route cause, is not going to fix it.
Quebec, why don't you just leave Canadian confederation. You have discriminated against anglophones and other minorities for decades. A lot of us want you gone and take Trudeau with you.
Veux-tu qu'on parle de la discrimination envers les francophones et autres minorités que le ROC a fait et continue de faire et de depuis plus de 100 ans ?
Its crazy that theyll try to control people like this when it has nothing to do with public safety. Trudeaus from there though so maybe theres a connection
QC didn’t sign on the 1982 constitution so imo, they shouldn’t get anything from the rest of Canada, not even a seat in parliament, they don’t want to sign on then get out.
I'm hoping Quebec separates. Tired of the BS. Hope federal government cuts them off 100%, Quebec establishes their borders, new currency, passports and armed forces. Can't imagine any new business coming here, hope all English and ethnics take their money elsewhere.
