Lily-Kate Cotter Absolutely !😊No One member of Queen would have been AS successful without the others. They definitely each had success’s on their own, but together they were invincible. It’s the give and take the push and pull of each member that makes Queen what it is. Writing a song isn’t as easy as just words and cords, you must pull a melody OUT of the music. I think that is actually the MOST difficult part of song writing.

Freddie Mercury, for my money, was the finest musician who ever lived, but this song was Brian's absolute finest hour and his performance of it could literally never be matched, even by Freddie himself. so the story in the song is: an astronaut who travels to a distant place at near the speed of light. Because of the time dilation that takes place at these speeds, he and his crew return home 100 years later. He has aged only a year but sadly finds that his wife has long passed on and that he is about the same age as his grandchildren, with everyone he knew before being dead for many years.

I've met Brian three times in total, it was during his Back to the Light tour here in England in 1993. One of the striking memories of each show was the emotional interplay between Brian and the audience. These were his first live performances since Freddie's death two years previously, and you could tell how nervous he was - especially about his singing. He was obviously not going to be able to sing like Freddie, but I think he was just hoping to be able to give all of us in the audience a respectable show. Anyway, there was such affection for him from the crowd - they were willing him on, and applauding every high note he managed. It was such a strange, and moving experience - not like any other concert I've seen before or since then.

@miriam5047
@miriam5047 3 года назад
@@cyrenaj8597 The short version: it's about the tragedy of time dilation, which has caused the singer to outlive his loved ones. The long version: The song is about a SPACE ship, not a sailing ship (notice how the ship is sailing across the milky seas--that's the Milky Way!). Due to...uh...physics stuff (think it has to do w/e=mc^2??), someone traveling at close-to-light speeds will experience time much more slowly than everyone else. So 20 astronauts volunteers to find a new planet for everyone to settle because Earth is being used up. They sail away in the year of '39 and come back after they find a new planet in the year of '39...that is, '39 of *the next century*. Even though they've only experienced a year, a full one hundred years have passed on Earth. So the singer comes home, having successfully completed his mission and saved humanity...but the woman they loved is long dead. All they have left is the woman's child, who has inherited her eyes. They can only look into child's eyes and yearn for their loved one. FYI, Brian May is an astrophysicist (y'know, since being a superstar isn't enough for this overachiever XD). So he knows what he's writing about! It's one of the reasons I love this song so much--not only does it tell a good story in a beautiful, succinct way, it is also scientifically accurate!

HE KNOWS!(didn't know much about Queen,didn't know that Brian had studied astrophysics and would eventually go on to earn a PhD on the subject).Plus,it's basically a sci-fi folk song,love the melody and the way Brian sings it.

+Jason Goatcher Science fiction stories about relativistic space ships and time dilation were already in the literature before the song was written, including Ursula K. LeGuin's stories featuring NAFAL (Nearly As Fast As Light) travel and Poul Anderson's Tau Zero. So the group might have gotten the inspiration from a novel or story. That does not subtract from Queen's brilliance in turning it into a poignant story of love lost that takes less than four minutes to tell.

Yes, I know he's not Freddie Mercury, but Brian and Roger said afterwards that they could think of no one else more suited to cover that song than George, citing that George is an incredible vocalist and gave the song so much respect. Not many people can do that to a Queen song, but on that night he seriously pulled it off. RIP Freddie, and George. Both titans of their respective followers, and in the industry.

I just looked up the meaning of the lyrics and DAMN it’s sad. And it makes perfect sense with the lyrics. So basically, the volunteers are astronauts that fly away from the earth at near light speed. Eventually, they come back with good news: they found another life-bearing planet! To their dismay, however, even though they only aged a year, because of time dilation, the earth and everyone on it aged over a century. Humanity is probably dead by then, and even if it isn’t, everyone the volunteers have ever known and loved died a long time ago.

Has anyone else noticed how this song is like the whole story of Intersteller in less than 4 mins. Apart from the similar story line 1. Part where "land is few" from song is similar to Intersteller where irrigable land is short. 2. Writing letters in the sand is similar to way they communicate via writing morse code on dirt. 3. The way they come back in around an year. But after 100 earth Years. 4. When Cooper from Intersteller comes back to his old Daughter is similar to "Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me." 5. End of movie when Cooper s Daughter dies and he continues is like "For my life Still ahead Pity Me." Any idea if Intersteller was inspired from '39

+Abhishek Jiwankar LOL, probably the movie was partially based on the song?

+Abhishek Jiwankar Also milky sea=milky way. I had the same thoughts when I first heard it back in the day. Long before Interstellar, at that time we did not know Brian May would become Brian May PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007.

+jeeptrick1 While I didn't hear the song until about '81 (thanks to the "good" old Columbia Record Club), I realized right away what it was about. Yes; I was a total space nerd. :-) When I saw "Interstellar", I immediately saw the parallels... although it's almost impossible to avoid them, given, well, physics. I won't go so far as to say the movie was inspired by the song, but once you've put it on film it's only polite to recognize those who have gone this route before... and they may have, as commented above. But either way, it's still a great tune.

+jeeptrick1 I agree. Brian May is one smart dude :) Had it been anyone else Queen would have been all about Mercury. But Brian May is equally talented, if not more. He might not have reach like Mercury but there is a beautiful sweetness to his voice. Cant imagine songs like "I am love with my car" w/o him.

So basically, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is the 3hour version of this song. Brian May should get a credit.

***** This is probably the main reason my friends and I hated that movie SO MUCH... and one of my friends was doing a screenplay adaptation of the song, with the proper name and credits to May. She actually cried.

***** Well, at least Brian May can introduce himself as an astrophysicist and as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Both being true. I don't think Christopher Nolan can claim either. Credit earned.

As a young man in the late 1970s still in school and short of $$ I didn't have alot, big but, I did have an ancient phonograph with an 8 track player. I had 6 tapes total 2 queen, 2 areosmith, van halen and a richard pryor I had to keep hidden. I had sheer heart attack and a night at the opera. That limited selection was a soundtrack to my youth. Those tapes would play continually 24hrs a day, just KA GINGING between the 4 programs for non stop distraction from adolescence. They all self destructed from overplay and vanished but the music remained. I haven't heard those albums since then, just the ones that get radio play, etc. This last winter I had the song '39 play in all my dreams one night, each one waking me up at some point, and eventually the tune was playing in my head too loud for sleep. I went here and played this and other versions of the same all day, and continued to dream it all night only to wake up the next day the same way. And each night and day since the same, sometimes quiet, and farther off in the background. But not to the point of distraction or trouble, it is always a good thing if not a lifesaver, again as before in my youth. Here I am today. Yes, I hear your call, as I did many years ago. Yes, I hear you calling me. There is nothing I could say, but thank you Brian May, for this song, then and now, and here today.

So, while I don't have anything against funny people, I don't favour them when looking at men because of how I've seen people with the same qualities behave quite cruelly. Hence why what you wrote originally above is more my type. Sorry if this offended anyone, I did not mean it to.
