We're back to full strength this week! All three Listographers are on board to rank the studio albums of Queen.
We left it up to the audience by posting a poll on our community tab of some acts that Jason had done solo and were ripe for a remastering. The competition was close but Queen eeked out a win, beating Steely Dan by 1%.
Fear not Steely Dan fans...The Dan is coming up next week!
****
Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock.
Before forming Queen, May and Taylor had played together in the band Smile. Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques. He joined in 1970 and suggested the name "Queen". Deacon was recruited in February 1971, before the band released their eponymous debut album in 1973. Queen first charted in the UK with their second album, Queen II, in 1974. Sheer Heart Attack later that year and A Night at the Opera in 1975 brought them international success. The latter featured "Bohemian Rhapsody", which stayed at number one in the UK for nine weeks and helped popularise the music video format.
The band's 1977 album News of the World contained "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions", which have become anthems at sporting events. By the early 1980s, Queen were one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world. "Another One Bites the Dust" from The Game (1980) became their best-selling single, while their 1981 compilation album Greatest Hits is the best-selling album in the UK and is certified nine times platinum in the US. Their performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert is ranked among the greatest in rock history by various publications. In August 1986, Mercury gave his last performance with Queen at Knebworth, England. In 1991, he died of bronchopneumonia-a complication of AIDS-and Deacon retired in 1997. Since 2004, May and Taylor have toured under the "Queen +" name with vocalists Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.
Queen have been a global presence in popular culture for more than four decades. Estimates of their record sales range from 170 million to 300 million, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. In 1990, Queen received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and with each member having composed hit singles all four were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2005 they received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, and in 2018 they were presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Agree with much of what was said here. I don’t think Queen is overrated at all when considering the diversity of musical styles and risk they took, the talent of each member, and how incredible those early albums are and how many hidden gems are on each of them. I can’t think of many other bands that have influenced such a diverse range of artists - from Iron Maiden and Metallica to Boston and then Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. I do agree they are overrated by most fans as they judge them solely by the hits and haven’t heard the first 4 albums or have any idea how hard these guys rocked live before they got mainstream. I think if Queen arrived in 1970-1971 and not 73 the catalog would look way different because they wouldn’t have had to change their sound so quickly to keep themselves relevant around punk/new wave. Along with the first Van Halen and Back in Black, Night at the Opera and News of the world were the first tapes I ever owned when I was elementary school and they were the first bad whose catalog I completely went through (Pink Floyd followed shortly after). Those 70s are all over the place but that is what I find so endearing about them - a different kind of experimental creating a musical adventure when it was done well. The variety of the music I listen to now I owe in part to Queen and the fact I started my personal musical quest there. Prob Pink Floyd too because I’ve always Sun Ra and avant-Jazz because of that early catalog. Queen II - for me it’s their masterpiece. You summed it up so well Joe “a Renaissance painting.” I can’t think of any other album like this and just so easy to get immersed and find new things every time I listen to it. Sheer Heart Attack - one of the best album openers ever? The first speed/trash metal song ever recorded?? That incredible medley on side one, the first John Deacon pop song on side 2?? Only knocks are I can do without In the Lap of the Gods and the production on Now I’m Here is missing something (song always way better live). A Night at the Opera - this is a perfect album IMO, no weak spots to my ears. Great shout out on The Profits Song. Love the Brian May songs on here 39, Good Company, and Sweet Lady is awesome (if you love Kiss how can you not love this song)! I still rank Sheer Heart attack higher because of the raw power in parts and just the murkiness of that album I like more. Queen - such an underrated album can’t agree more. Liar followed by The Night Comes Down awesome, the instrumental part on My Fairy King that has such a unique ending in those final notes, those power chords kicking in the middle of Jesus showing what a powerhouse these guys could be when they wanted. The production gives it this dark vibe which makes a perfect nighttime album. News of the World - skip to track 3 Sheer Heart Attack and its such a perfect set of songs. Who could pull off Sheer Heart Attack then follow it up with something like All Dead All Dead? It’s Late, Spread Your Wings so good. Gimme generic rockers like Sleeping on the Sidewalk all day. A Day at the Races - its a great album IMO but a step down from the first 4 for me for two reasons. First, the production doesn’t have the same flourishes as ANATO - the Brian May jazz band, the touches like on Seaside.....it’s the first album they produced themselves without Roy Thomas Baker and it sounds more polished/less experimental/more straightforward. Second a couple very weak songs in White Man and Teo Torriate which I always thought was cheesy. That said, side one absolutely perfect with a couple tracks that are among the best in the catalog. The Game - a great pop record. A few of these songs I’ll never need to hear again but Save Me, Play the Game, Dragon Attack, Sail away all great. I actually really enjoy the Roger Taylor new wave cuts also. Jazz - def the weakest least consistent album of the 70s, the worst produced too. Some great moments like Dead on Time and Mustapha but also a few cheesy clunkers from Deacon. Their only 70s album I find myself pulling off after a few songs and going to something else. The Works - this is a good album and prob the best one they did after The Game. Agree it’s almost a carbon copy of The Game but there are a bunch of good songs on here. Innuendo - I want to rank this a few spots higher - the title track and Bijou in particular are some of the best things they ever did. I like the generic rockers too and Ride the Wild Wind.......the cat song though just sucks and a few other ones aren’t good which takes it down a few spots. A Kind of Magic - title track (love the guitar solo in this song - just the perfect solo for a pop song), Princes of the Universe (awesome), Kurgans Theme (Mays intro a nod to EVH), and Who Wants to Live Forever. That’s pretty much it though - the rest isn’t good. Highlander did win the Academy Award for best movie ever made according to Ricky Bobby. Flash Gordon - yes I’m ranking this one higher. Just two great songs on it but so many ethereal instrumental pieces that I really love. I always thought Blade Runner had one of the best soundtracks ever and some of these take me to a similar place (although not nearly as good as the Vangelis work). Helps that I loved this movie as a little kid. Hot Space - Under Pressure and Cool Cat are the only redeeming qualities. Side one is def a turkey. The Miracle - Joe summed it up well. Made in Heaven - maybe I need to hear this again but I hated it the first time I heard it. I understand the circumstances but just a strange vibe through it.

For goodness sake, there are no fillers on 'A Night at the Opera'. 'Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon' is short, but it is sweet - I love that song. A lot of those really short songs that Queen wrote are absolutely stunning - think of 'Lily of the Valley', 'Nevermore'...especially the earlier albums.

@Jaggedknife11 2 года назад
Nope, strong disagree. Great album with good filler but lots of filler nontheless. That's the whole thing with Queen, 4 different songwriters with unique voices with no central authority/ego controlling the output. All of their albums have filler because of the free-wheeling nature of how they organized the band.
@Destroythealliance
@Destroythealliance 2 года назад
@@Jaggedknife11 Nah, . Sheer Heart Attack, A Day At The Races, Queen, Opera have no filler, or very little filler. We also have different opinions of what filler is since we all like different things. I feel the 80's albums have more filler, but they're are people out there that love those songs that I consider filler.. I love a song called filler, but you may hate the song called filler.

@Jaggedknife11
@Jaggedknife11 2 года назад
@@Destroythealliance I define filler as a song I feel is not quite complete, or just there to fill time/add a certain sound but clearly not meant to be a stunning showoff for the bands capabilities. I love queen, especially Their early stuff (honestly with a few big exception I don't really like 80s queen. 70s queen is genius though) Dosn't mean I can't also see the flaws. For years I've said Jazz is my favorite queen album and one of my favorite albums of all time. Dosn't mean I don't see songs like "get down make love" as good ideas that feel unfinished and are there to add variety but not necessarily the best of the best. Sweet lady really feels like that to me as well. Good riff and melody, but super simple and repetitive and has a bit of going thru the motions vibe. It's Like they said "we gotta add an extra rocker so quick think of a riff and lyric and boom done". Anyway I'm just trying to have a good back and forth with other music fans who appreciate good stuff like queen. Calling me an asshole seems like an overreaction.

Regarding Queens’ popularity in the U.K.: yep, they’re huge. The problem, however, is that it’s almost solely based around their ‘hits’ and that Queens Greatest Hits is the biggest-selling album of all time, here; followed by another act whom you could label similarly regarding popularity: ABBA, with their compilation, ABBA GOLD. Everyone owns it. It’s a shame that the average music consumer doesn’t delve developer and explore their studio albums, more. Great video, guys!

Good work guys. I've blathered on about Queen quite enough on my channel over the years so I won't comment at length. I'll just repeat the story about how in my old band, whenever we had to audition a new musician we used to take them to the pub first and ask them what they thought of Queen. If they said they didn't like them, we wouldn't then in fact ask them to audition. Waste of time. A while back I did a discussion video with another UK Queen fan about their eighties records. Cheers.

I’m British, so I obviously love Queen. I grew up in the 70s and there was very few good quality rock songs on the radio. Queen was one of them. They were also great live. Problem is though most albums are Jekyll & Hyde. Some really good stuff mixed with disposable rubbish. My top 5 studio albums: 5. Innuendo 4. The Game 3. Jazz 2. Night at the Opera 1. News of the World However my actual favourites are Live Killers & Greatest Hits.

I think, relatively speaking, the most anti-Queen dissent comes from British people (even if it's dwarfed by the love for Queen). There's a strong leftist/leftfield element in the UK that despises Queen, mostly for political reasons. For example: if someone raves about The Clash and The Smiths they'll most likely hate Queen.

Just found your channel thanks to youtube noticing that I was watching a lot of "rank the rock artist/band albums" videos lately. This was so interesting. I definitely like the perspectives of having all of you there. I really started getting into Queen in the early 2000s (my early twenties) when I developed a strong interest in 70s hard rock. Of course I'd heard plenty of the hits before and thought they were -- ok, sometimes. But discovering stuff like "Brighton Rock", "Keep Yourself Alive", "Ogre Battle", "Stone Cold Crazy" (Covered of course by Metallica; I never realised it was a Queen song til probably the late 90s), "Sheer Heart Attack" and more was really what made me like Queen. The further away they get from that kind of blueprint, the less I like them, though I do have a fondness for Play the Game for instance. I just want to say though guys -- and I think one of you is more in agreement with me on the way I perceive this than the others (sorry, I'll need to watch more before I become familiar with your names)...three stars, three anda *half* stars? TO me that's a pretty damn good album! I guess star ratings are weird. For me I wouldn't rate something I'd not voluntarily listen to above 2 stars. Four stars is something really impressive and 5 blows your mind. The comments you guys leave for "3, 3 and a half star" albums like Miracle are really sincere and rather harsh, don't get me wrong, so it's not at all an issue with your actual statements about the records, which is the far more interesting part of the whole game anyway...

Ratings these days are tough … there’s so much grade inflation, critics rarely give out anything under a 3/5 so I had to raise my ratings in general. For me 3.5 is an album that’s pretty good but lacks staying power or has a few good or great tracks but not a cohesive album. 3.5 stars and I’ll probably never listen to the whole thing ever again. 4 stars and up, then it’s a great album or 5 stars an all-time classic. - Joe

Queen did not only produce great albums , they were absolutely fantastic live. You only need to watch their Live Aid performance to see what they could do. Their Live Killers album is one of my favourites. I do agree that they guilty of writing some duff tracks but a Bohemian Rhapsody and Somebody to Love are just brilliant. I disagree about Tie your mother down, it is one on my top ten tracks and I was surprised no one mentioned the Stunning Now I’m Here…makes me feel alive every time I play it. My top five would be: 1, A Night at the Opera 2. A day at the Races 3. Sheer Heart Attack 4. Queen II 5. News of the world.

Even their best studio releases have a little filler on them (and their worst ones are almost all filler.) On the other hand, their best songs are as memorable as rock music gets and their ability to hop between genres is truly remarkable. Queen's discography may be weaker than most bands of their stature but I think their peak performances are so epic it justifies the praise they get. MY RATING SYSTEM: 5.0 = major classic 4.5 = minor classic 4.0 = great 3.5 = very good 3.0 = good 2.5 = fair 2.0 = poor 1.5 = awful 1.0 = historically awful I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore. Anything I rate 3.5 stars or higher is an album I'm enthusiastic about and would likely revisit at some point.

Agree with you that Queen is not really a great "albums band". I think they released a ton of great singles, but, more often then not, I'd be happy listening to their greatest hits albums. I mentioned them on the "Bands with no 5-Star Albums" videos, and I stand by it. They have a few that are strong 4-stars, but there always seems to be at least one or two clunkers on all their albums that keep them from achieving greatness.

@@threestringsomg I could've given The Game another half-star except I don't care for pretty much the entire 2nd half of that album. I think it's got about 4 legitimately great songs on it (and those type of albums struggle to get to 4 stars in my book.) Remember, we're rating the entire album, not just the singles. If I were rating only the singles pretty much every '70s Queen album would get 5 stars. I just think their deep album tracks, on average, aren't as strong as many of the other famous classic rock bands.

Really like the channel, especially these album rankings. I love the way none of you give even the slightest shit whether or not your opinions track with each other or with the music review zeitgeist. I also appreciate the more detailed mini-reviews that you each do with each album as opposed to the vast majority of your contemporaries who have almost nothing specific to say and resort to using escalating synonyms for "like" and flashing their vinyl copy of the album (or apologizing for not being able to locate their physical copy of album #19). Keep up the good work guys... your formula might not work for everyone in this era of diminished attention spans, but it works for this viewer. I will most likely watch the majority of what you post going forward as well as slowly work my way through your robust back catalogue. I'm an Englishman that has been a Queen fan since my dad brought home the Night at The Opera album. Queen never really made it big in the US and the comments in this video pretty much say why, I think. It's a cultural thing. In my opinion Queen's greatest strength was their live performances, which you just had to be there to understand how emotionally powerful Queen were, and they set their songs in their proper context. No-one just walked off after a Queen gig; you floated out of the arena and didn't come down for days after. I stuck with watching this video to the end because I was intrigued enough to want to hear a differing point of view, although I think attempting to rank music is a pretty lame and dullard thing to do. Anyway, a big thank you for at least putting serious thought into the back catalogue of a band that has been a big part of my life. And by the way, Queen II is probably their finest recording work. Thanks again.

The Listography boys might cry foul, but I believe I was once again able to overcome my personal tastes and evaluate this music objectively to some extent, based on its merits and how good I think it actually is as opposed to whether or not I would reach for it again. * Some might be surprised at my high placement of Flash Gordon. But for me, I was a fan of the movie when I was a kid. So hearing this soundtrack brought back warm and fuzzy memories. It's not something I'm likely to go back to though and the dialogue would probably become tedious upon repeated listens. * Jazz was the first album to contain what I consider to be less than good songs. * "The Invisible Man" smacks of The Ghostbusters theme. Not great. * If the band insisted on that album cover for The Miracle, I would have suggested they call the album something like "Together As One" which would make the whole thing a little less weird (in a bad way).

Comment # 2: It was refreshing for once to see Night at the Opera not coming at the top of everyone's lists (I also had it at # 6). I've always enjoyed the grimier side of Queen (one of the reasons I love News of the World so much). On Joe's point about never having heard anyone talk about Queen II, Beck Hansen was often heard to rave about it back in the nineties. Slight modification to Kramzer's point that Queen was a band that turned up at the studio with their own individual songs already written and ready to record...in fact that's not quite the case. In a lot of cases, what would be brought to the studio would be song sketches to which everyone would then sweat blood to turn into 'Queen', but the person who brought in the original idea would retain sole authorship. Finally, it's not a kazoo on NATO, Roger did all those parts with his voice!

Why do many regard "Queen" as one of the greatest bands of all-time(up there with The Beatles)? Easy. They were the complete package and then some. Every member could write and had a hit song. Their discography from the 1st record up til "The Game" is awesome. I'll put it up against any other artist. The consistency is amazing. Freddie Mercury is the greatest rock frontman of all-time. And they were a phenomenal live band. And they did many genres of music well. Now will Kramzer take back his comments? My list: 15. Flash Gordon (2.5 star BUT "The Hero" rules!) 14. My rankings only go 1-11. I have not yet listened to their last five albums. I expect them to slot near the bottom of the rankings, but we'll see. If I have time to finish the assignment, I'll update tomorrow. Until then, here are my rankings with star ratings: 1. A Night at the Opera 4 stars 2. Queen 3.5 stars 3. News of the World 3 stars 4. Sheer Heart Attack 3 stars 5. Jazz 3 stars 6. The Game 2 .5 stars 7. Hot Space 2 stars 8. The Works 2 stars 9. Queen II 2 stars 10. A Day at the Races 1 star 11. Flash Gordon 0 stars Tomorrow's video will be much more fun. I have always found Queen to be a band with a lot of great, great songs, but few good records and no great records. I can remember the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody, and it totally blew my mind. I went out the next day and bought A Night at the Opera, and pretty much enjoyed most of it. But everything since that time has been a disappointment. A Day at the Races was a Tormato/Love Beach level disappointment. Others less so (except Flash Gordon, which is wholly unlistenable).

My relationship with Queen is fairly spotty. I got into the first Queen album very heavily when it came out in early 1973.They struck me like Zeppelin with a better singer. I loved Queen II when it came out - played it into the ground practically. Then came Sheer Heart Attack, and I sort of fell off the Queen Train (I liked side one, hated side two). But after this discussion, I think it might be interesting to revisit them and see what I think after all these years. Great discussion!

Excellent review. I really enjoyed it. I became a big fan of Queen when 'The Game' was released. From there, I bought all their older stuff. All the vinyl records from Queen I up until Hot Space. I did most of my listening to Queen in the 80's. My personal choice for No. 1 would be 'Night at the Opera' and like Jason, I was blown away by the Prophet's Song...so much so that I ended up preferring it to Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen II & I are also very much personal favourites.

A-Tier. To me these albums have the most consistently good songs. I think I prefer that late 70s period Queen to the other eras. SHA is also an interesting diversion into glam/heavy rock. 1. News of the World 2. The Game 3. Jazz 4. Sheer Heart Attack B-Tier. Both ADATR and ANATO have some good songs, I just think they're too all over the place and there's a good chunk of songs I don't care about on both. AKOM is actually pretty good, but the production just sounds so mid-80s. 5. A Day at the Races 6. A Night at the Opera 7. A Kind of Magic C-Tier. Not a huge fan of the early proggy stuff about fairies and dragons or the 80s synth pop. Not horrible, but not the best. "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Under Pressure" are two of my favorite Queen songs though, so their are some gems here. 8. The Works 9. Queen 10. Queen II 11. Hot Space D-Tier. With the Miracle and Innuendo, they're clearly phoning it in at this point. Flash and MIH get demerits by not really being real albums. 12. Innuendo 13. The Miracle 14. Flash Gordon 15. Made in Heaven

I totally agree with Joe about the narrow temporal window in which Queen produced its' quality LPs. They certainly were prolific during this period, after all they released their first three albums in a 17 month period in 1973-74 and then, like clockwork, an album per year until 1978 and Jazz. While I don't love all the albums in this period, I would argue that this was their peak in quality as well as quantity of music recorded. I am of an age where I was a contemporaneous consumer, if not a huge fan, of Queen's output starting with the debut. In that I was probably ahead of the curve as Queen didn't get really big or widely popular, at least in America until Night At The Opera and the Bohemian Rhapsody single in 1975 (the same events which would suck in two different generations of fans, first after Wayne's World and then after the Mercury biopic movie). I saw the band twice, first during the Day At The Races tour in January 1977 at the Richfield (Cleveland) Coliseum, and then the Jazz tour show this time at the Capital Centre in suburban D.C. in November 1978 a couple of weeks before the release of Jazz, but after the Bicycle Race/Fat Bottomed Girls single had hit the airwaves. The former leaned heavily into the early material including deep cuts while the latter was more of a greatest hits show, basically the same thing released on Live Killers. While the shows were great, they were somewhat marred by heavy use of tape loops providing overdubs and occasionally whole sections of songs, e.g. Bohemian Rhapsody, sounds which I guess they could not replicate live. Their stuff beyond the Game is pretty bad, largely self-indulgent and boringly repetitive On balance I would say that Queen was good to very good, but inferior to a lot of acts occupying the same niches within the popular/rock music of the day, but would somewhat comfortably reside within my top 50-60. Now the list: 1. A Night At The Opera 2. Queen (the debut) 3. A Day At The Races 4. Sheer Heart Attack 5. The Game 6. Queen II 7. Jazz 8. News Of The World (tainted, irrevocably, by We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions) 9. The Works 10. Made In Heaven 11. Innuendo 12. A Kind Of Magic 13. Hot Space 14. The Miracle 15. Flash Gordon Great job guys. I really enjoyed the discourse.
