I’ve really grown to love this guy. The Lord of Dad Rock! We don’t always share the same taste in music, but he always gets me spending an hour on Spotify after each video. Infectious
Yeah man. I'm 52 and Pete got me into a lot of bands that were around and pretty big in my day but just never went deep into their catalogs. Jethro Tull, UFO, Thin Lizzy are just 3 of many I never went hard on before. I've gone to cover to cover of every album on tull and thin lizzy and I'm a freak with them now. So many others and new stuff too.
MrAitraining I’m 53 but have never been into Dad Rock with the exception of Sabbath. (They began about five miles from where I live). Probably everything else but Dad Rock. But Pete has got me now owning all of the Whitesnake, most of Purple, some Tull, and some Queen. Am quite happy about that
I rank Innuendo at the top spot. It’s simply pure genius. A direct return to queens roots type of kick ass rock’n roll. Every single song on it is great, there’s rockers, some proggish and epic ballads, basically every facet of music style that represents queen is on Innuendo. Also it is without a doubt the best farewell album going out on top by any band. Considering Freddie’s failing health props to him struggling during the 2 years that it took to get the album finished he literally was starring death in the eye and vowed to work till he dropped. Listening to this masterpiece you would never know that he was so seriously ill and close to death he was a sheer professional to the end.
@@antonbarkland2194 I’m so torn about the Show Must go on. Love the song and it’s great as a closer. But personally I’d like These Are the Days Of our Lives better as the closer. It would be a more subtle, beautiful exit to Freddie.
This is one of my favorite RU-vid series. I’ve got so many albums, but for the ones I’m missing, this is the best guide to what’s good (and what sucks). Great critical commentary!
Same here! I use Pete´s videos, along with similar uploads by other RU-vidrs, as buying guides. It comes in especially handy when my own imagination is running low.
Father to son is great and leads perfectly to white Queen. Some day one day and loser in the end are good side dishes to diversify the genres and vibes of the album. But Freddie’s half is on another level from top to bottom. Black Queen, master stroke, ogre battle. God this record is great
Not a fan of the first 2 albums...don't hate them just prefer their more hummable stuff...otherwise largely agree (though would've placed the works higher)🎩
I would say definitely should own deluxe first album great alternative versions. The rest of deluxe series don't have much to offer at best a couple non album b.sides.
Sheer Heart Attack is so cool. Such artistry. Near the end the ballad "She Makes Me" really stands out and how the finale goes out with a heavy breathing inhale. Gets you every time.
I can't pick a best but Innuendo is up at the top with some of the other greats for me too. I believe if someone doesn't like All God's People they have no soul :) Truly inspired.
Very good. I'd put Night At The Opera at 4 (Sweet Lady and Prophet's Song, among others) and News Of The World at 5 (It's Late being the best song of all time). Your top three are spot on. But can you imagine doing this in 30 years with Justin Beiber albums?
despite the fact that I can truly enjoy "Innuendo" album, since it is definitely one of those better 80's albums from the band, I truly doubt it is their second best...... infact, any 70's is better in my opinion, cause back in the 70's, they were spitting out one masterpiece after another....... on the other hand, I strongly agree "Queen II" being their very best...... not only their best album, but certainly one of the greatest albums of all time in general...... pretty much a flawless record...... and the first album was also a hell of a debut
A friend of my mum (a Mr. Harding) lived in the same road as Roger Taylor and his mum. When Queen had recorded 'Queen I' he came to his house to tell Mr. Harding that he was in a new band and they were releasing their first album. He knocked on Mr. Harding's door, who opened it to see Roger, John Deacon and Brian May on his doorstep. True story, and when Mr. Harding told me my mouth was open and I'm convinced my jaw was on the floor.
A top five all time favorite band.. 1- Queen II one of the greatest albums ever made. 2- Queen 1 what a debut 3- Sheer Heart Attack 4- Night at the Opera 5- Day at the Races- very underrated 6- All the rest except Hot Space🥺
100% agree with your list.......after this it felt like they were chasing anthems......when Killer Queen is your first intro to this band, everything after your number 5 is a drop off
It surprises me that Night at the Opera isn’t everyone’s favourite. People on this channel sure like 1 and 2 ... I’ll give them another listen but Day at the races always seemed like their other perfect album
I love the guitar on "It's Late" so much that I tried to get a band I was in to cover it. We got the arrangement OK, but couldn't get anyone who could sing it.
It's Late is a killer track, and so very underrated. It has the highest note on a Queen studio album E6. I love that guitar riff, there are some great drumming moment, and Freddie's voice is absolutely amazing on that song. Have you seen this cover? It is quite good, but James Labrie is not quite Freddie Mercury. (James Labrie did skip over the E6 note) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g3uXs6KOspY.html
I have a friend (who was a singer) who used to dismiss Queen... until he tried to sing "It's Late". He put the respect in it's rightful place very quickly after that... :D
During one of my Nephew's visits, I asked him if he liked Queen. He said he did and mentioned he had their greatest hits album. So, I proceeded to blow his mind by playing all of Queen for him. He didn't realize there were other singers in the band besides Freddy. Now, he's a REAL Queen fan!
Sometimes it's the obvious one: A Night at the Opera. I may be prejudiced because I got my copy signed by the band in early '76 when they appeared at Strawberries in Boston before their show at the Music Hall. It's my most prized possession.
1- Queen II - absolute genius, various unknown gems in it 2- Sheer Heart Attack 3- Innuendo 4- A Day at the Races 5- Queen 6- A Night at the Opera 7- News of the World 8- The Game 9- Jazz 10- A Kind of Magic
Firstly I just want to say I absolutely love Hot Space.i got into it when I was in my early twenties. The song, Staying Power, the driving bass and the pace of it just made me feel really happy and I just love the difference of it all.i love music that moves me and feeds my soul that's why I love this channel.anyway my albums in an interchangeable list are A night at the opera Queen 2 Queen Sheer Heart Attack A Day At the Races The Game News of the World Jazz The Works A kind of Magic The Miracle Innuendo Cosmos Rocks Hot Space Made in Heaven Love them all, some I play more than others.i just think Queen was,are pure music and Magic 👍🌹
I think the 1st 5 Queen Albums are the essential Queen Albums. Especially the 1st 3 Albums. Queen 1, Queen 2 & Sheer Heart Attack are absolute killer. Represents Queen at their best.
I need to listen to some more Queen albums soon, I love the first 4 but only heard a few songs from the rest. I really don't know if I could pick a favourite between Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera!
Another good one , Pardo! Just this morning , i decided to grab something, i havent listened to in awhile, on the way to work, and i grabbed the SHEER HEART ATTACK cd. TURNED UP LOUD, i forgot how good it was, NOW, IM HERE! BRIGHTON ROCK!
Almost fully in agreement except for Q2 which is my favorite since I first heard it back in the early 80's. And "The March of The Black Queen" is also my favorite Queen track. Thanks for the great reviews!
Great list again Pete. Provs once more that you have excellent taste. ........ My top 5: 1. Queen 2. Queen II 3. A Day At The Races 4. A Night At The Opera 5. Sheer Heart Attack
Table of Content (Cause I'm Lazy): 15. Hot Space - 00:01:35 14. Made In Heaven - 00:02:42 13. The Cosmos Rocks - 00:03:47 12. The Miracle - 00:05:13 11. A Kind Of Magic - 00:06:38 10. The Works - 00:07:45 9. Innuendo - 00:08:47 8. The Game - 00:10:52 7. News Of The World - 00:12:38 6. Jazz - 00:14:32 5. A Day At The Races - 00:16:41 4. Queen 2 - 00:17:47 3. Sheer Heart Attack - 00:19:50 2. Queen - 00:21:01 1. A Night At The Opera - 00:21:55
Sheer Heart Attack is my favorite Queen album. However, overall I agree with your top four. They are all right up there as masterpieces and on any given day interchangeable.
Queen II is the best for me. The overall mood of the album , the prog/heavy/complex/theatrical is absolutly unique. Side 2 sounds like a 20 minute epic ( from Ogre battle on). If they had disbanded after Queen II they would still be one of the best bands of all times.
Hi Pete, I remember in the 80’s a buddy and mine would have an album of the year! And we would go up into the Mountains of L.A. get wasted with Johnny Walker Red.....from 1980 to 89’ The Alan Parsons Project took 3 of those years, I guess I was a bit partial..lol. Thanks for your GREAT SHOWs ....Rock on:-)
Fantastic job, Pete. This IS just like talking to friends about our favorite bands. Queen provided the soundtrack of my teen years, and I have had the pleasure of seeing them live supporting the Night at the Opera album. They are a true original.
Fantastic review! Love the band. Saw them at knebworth in 86. Will see them again in June . My favourite album is probably the debut. It’s just so raw !
Jazz has always held a special place in my heart. It was while looking for the band who did Bicycle that I first realized that this band had done so many songs that I loved from the previous five years. Suddenly it just clicked and they became my favorite band of all time.
Great list. I can understand the problem with first ranks. My list would be: 1. Sheer Heart Attack A total work of art. Tenement Funster, Flick of the wrist and lily of the valley with the seamless transitions would be sufficient for first rank. Not a single bad track on the album. 2. A Night at the Opera Close second. 39 and Prophet's song are genius, but I hate sweet lady and You're my best friend is kind of boring. So 2nd. 3. Queen II White queen, Ogre Battle, The March of the black queen. Need I say more? 4. Jazz The last really great album until Innuendo. Mustapha is so much fun. 5. Innuendo I'm going slightly mad, These are the days of our lives, The show must go on and the corresponding videos are just heartbreaking. 6. Made in Heaven Yes, it is slower and not as extrovert as the others. But Freddie knew, he was slowly diyng and still recorded great songs like Mother love or Made in Heaven. Maybe musically not up there with the others, but a very decent goodbye and Freddies voice still gives me chills. „I long for peace before I die“
1) A Day At The Races (1976) 2) News Of The World (1977) 3) A Night At The Opera (1975) 4) Jazz (1980) 5) Sheer Heart Attack (1974) 6) The Game (1980) 7) Queen II (1974) 8) Queen (1973)
Totally agree that this is a difficult task: ranking the albums. I loved this band growing up, still listen to those 70s albums, especially Queen I - Liar is an amazing song. Your ranking reminded me how uniquely diverse this band was - News of the World is a great example of the various tastes and styles of music they could create and play flawlessly - all within one album. They are in a league of their own.
I have always been a huge Prog lover but I never been a big fan of Queen. They just never clicked for me. I dig their diversity and the musicianship, and Mercury's range but except for the second album and 'News' I have never really give them much thought. That said 'Innuendo' is a brilliant album. What a Swan Song by Mercury, saying his farewells knowing he wasn't long for the world. I love this album... excellent Prog.
@@EastmanD Eastman D I beg to differ, they are very Prog and you are wrong that they were never considered to be a Progressive Rock band. This isn't 'genre mish-mash' unless you don't understand what Progressive Music is in which case I can understand the error. They incorporated Classical, Jazz, Gospel and Opera to a Rock sensibility which is exactly the variations that make them Prog. You don't think 'Bohemian Rhapsody' isn't Prog? Just Like Eric Burdon's War on 'Declares War' and War's 'World is a Ghetto'. Eric Burdon created the band as a vehicle to combine rock, funk, classical, jazz and country into a musical form...which I exactly what Progressive music is. I could even cite Marshall Tucker Band to be Prog, combining Country, Western (yes there is a difference) Rock, and Jazz. But then I have only been listening to Prog since the late 60's so maybe I am mistaken.
@@awickedtribe Yes you're mistaken. You confusing the terms. My use of mish-mash was spot on, considering your mish-mash of an answer. If you want to believe that most of the music you listen to, is progressive (note the small "P") that's fine. Many bands can be considered "progressive" by blending different styles of music. But the use of the term "a Prog Rock band" was not used for bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, the Who and on and on. War ? Marshall Tucker ?? Man, please.... go to your browser and type... Is Queen Prog a prog rock band ? Queen definitely had many characteristics of progressive rock and certainly sounded the part in some of their songs. However, their themes were pop-oriented with influences of gospel, blues, and symphonic rock also forming a part of their style. ... Ultimately they were a hard rock and pop band. That by the way is from Quora.com...take it up with them...
The links between the Sex Pistols and Queen were incredible! Apparently,Sid Vicious and Freddie became friends (I think Fred wanted a bit more!...) I grew up with both bands, which is quite ironic in itself! Glad you done a review of the band who are so beloved over here in England... A review of The Faces/Small Faces,or,The Who would be amazing (hint!) Great video as always! Best regards Pete! S
“The works” is my absolute favorite album. Second place is either “innuendo” or “a day at the races”. Third is “a kind of magic”. Then all the other ones. I love them all
Is that UK’s live album Night After Night over your left shoulder? If so, great taste! My Queen Top 5: 1) News of the World 2) Jazz 3) A Night at The Opera 4) The Game 5) Sheer Heart Attack
Queen is one my favorite rock bands ever. Luckly in my country (Brazil), every record was released. Queen II is just insane. I love the deep cut Father to son and The Lose In The End, by Roger Taylor. Fantastic.
I'm so glad that you mentioned "that Leroy Brown song". One of my favorites. The live version from "Live at the Rainbow" (1974) is a "sort but sweet" true gem.
Hi Pete, I'm addicted to your show. I just discovered it about 2 weeks ago and it's all I watch. A music junkie myself I'm glad I found it. I've watched dozens of your videos and I agree with so many of your top ten lists it's uncanny. However, I feel you're missing a lot of bands that deserve some mention. I would love if you did a show on Stratovarius, Masterplan, At Vance, Heavenly, Angra, Derdian, Sonata Arctica, Excalion, Blind Guardian, Twilightning and Royal Hunt. These bands sound like Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Queen, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath all rolled into one. If you haven't listened to them check them out and in the meantime I'll still be watching your channel and enjoying every minute. Peace! RJ
being a huge QUEEN fan since the 70s your top picks of the BEST QUEEN albums were pretty spot on!! I absolutely LOVED this Episode about a band that is very near & dear to my heart....and a very unique band as well (as you so eloquently pointed out)...I feel very fortunate to have seen QUEEN a couple of times in their heyday here is Detroit at the most famous COBO ARENA...I enjoy your channel very much !!!
@@maelperez1567 unfortunately no ...back in those days it was very difficult to bring or sneak a camera or any kind of recording device in with you because everyone was searched ......you were just lucky you were there!! had crappy seats anyway ..
I love this band so much, that pretty much every album position except my last two are bound to change. The only albums I'm ambivalent on are my last two ranked, even though they're fun as a novelty for me. I'm also not counting the Paul Rodgers one, just because I've never listened to it. My list: 1. News of the World 2. Sheer Heart Attack 3. The Game 4. Queen 5. Jazz 6. Queen II 7. Innuendo 8. A Night At The Opera 9. The Works 10. A Day At The Races 11. Hot Space 12. Miracle 13. Some Kind Of Magic 14. Flash Gordon 15. Made In Heaven
Innuendo is one of my fave albums of all time. What a badass album from start to finish. My Top 10 of Queen are: 1- Innuendo, 2- The Miracle, 3- The Game, 4- A Kind of Magic, 5- A Day At The Races, 6- Sheer Heart Attack, 7- Queen 2, 8- A Night At The Opera, 9- Debut, 10- News Of The World
@@GrahamS67 I think Delilah, as a slow but uplifting song, makes a good bridge between the melancholic atmosphere of These Are The Days of Our Lives and the Heavy Rock of The Hitman.
@@LuchaLibertaria it honestly pleases me that someone gets something out of the song. That's what I love about music, that it has a varied appeal. For me it's a bit of a joke, but that's just me.
1. A Night at the Opera 2. Queen II 3. Queen 4. Sheer Heart Attack 5. Innuendo 6. Jazz 7. A Day at the Races 8. News of the World 9. The Game These are the albums I bought, so I know them well enough. I never bought The Game although I know the whole record. Live at the Rainbow is a great live album. The Sheer Heart Attack tour. Man, they were a helluva band. Great job Pete. As usual ! I do like some of the songs they did in the 80's. Innuendo was special. I agree 100% that it was a great album for Freddie to go out on. Inspiring and essential in my book.
Ok Pete, Queen are one of my favourite bands and I've been into them since the 70s. So here goes.... 1. Sheer heart attack 2. News of the world 3. Jazz 4. Queen II 5. Night at the opera 6. Queen (debut) 7. The game 8. Day at the races 9. Innuendo 10. The works 11. The miracle 12. A kind of magic 13. Cosmic rocks 14. Made in heaven 15. Flash 16. Hot space 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I had the privilege of seeing Queen at the Glasgow Apollo, Scotland in 1979 and Mercury's voice was beyond comprehension. A 3,000 seater and when I tell people here in Bulgaria, younger people, I have often been asked if they can touch me! Best album? Queen II within a hearbeat.
Hi Pete, Im new on your channel, and Im glad I've found you! I spend almost all of my weekend watching your vids. Not all of them yet of course, but im on to it in the future! We share almost the same taste in music. I really like what you did here with Queen (btw its my first band that brought me into music). March of the Black Queen is a killer. Much love from Poland
Another great vlog. Hitting 6 of my all time favorite bands in one month! King Crimson, Genesis, Sabbath, Yes Grand Funk and Queen! Man you have quite the discography. Keep em coming.
Fun fact: Queen released Another One Bites the Dust as a single at the suggestion of Michael Jackson, of all people. He was a big fan of Queen, and John Deacon (who wrote the song) credits him for the success of the song.
The video for I Want To Break Free was Roger Taylor's idea, not Freddie's. He, and his girlfriend at the time, thought a pastiche of British soap opera Coronation Street with the band in drag would be funny.
"Hot Space, a Hot mess" lol! I actually like several songs on it. Easily one of my favorite bands. Great king rat probably my favorite song off the first album. Brian May one of my favorite guitarist and Probably has my favorite guitar tone. Favorite Queen album is probably a night at the Opera. Although a couple of others are a close second.
Pete, If I counted correctly, their were 15 albums. Since there are over 1.3 trillion ways to arrange the 15 albums it is unlikely that any two lists will match. However, I am generally in agreement with your list. The first 4 albums they released are in my opinion the best. I also agreed with your bottom choices. Nice job.
Wow I agree with your rating of the albums, I think the Heaven album is more a work of love, a ending spot for the band. Queen is my favorite band since 1974 no other band could do such a wide range of music, nor would any other band have the courage to try to. Queen band members were inivators, theatrical and powerful, all members were great musicians. I like your video.😊
Queen were truly extremely varied, and that makes them unique too ! Have you had the chance to see them live back in the day ? I'd love to know, have a nice day !
@@maelperez1567 unfortunately no, I live in a small town in the high Sierra of California, all Queen's concerts were hundreds of miles away. No way would my father drive me to San Francisco to see a concert lol. But I own many of their concerts, and love watching them.
Although Made in heaven isn't one of their best albums it does contain one of my most favorite Queen songs... Mother love. Goosebumps everytime I listen to it
To test a stereo, play " my baby does me". Not a great song, but audio is stellar. When the guitar comes in, it's like glass. Covers the full spectrum of good lows with the drum machine and clean highs of guitar
Tie between sheer heart attack and night at the opera for me....my favorite songs are killer queen, your my best friend, and I'm in love with my car...highly respect all the extraordinary musicianship by all in this band, especially Brian May, who uses his platform to spread awareness on environmental issues, and animal activism, he is genuinely a very caring and empathic human.
I enjoyed your review, Pete, especially when you single out some of the really good songs. Most have to be in agreement with them because they simply standout. As to my list, I cannot do it. I feel so inar, inar, inar, inar, inarticulate.
Here's a fun anecdote that means absolutely nothing to anybody but me, but here goes. In '77 I had a friend that knew a guy that bootlegged 8-track albums. He had some inside into the industry somehow and we actually got News Of The World weeks before it's release. We actually took orders, and got personal copies and played them to death! When it was released somebody brought it into class, all proud that he had a copy on the first day it's release and didn't believe me when I told him I had heard it to death, almost constantly playing it in the car, at home. So I told him the track listings, sang a few songs. I am sure he thought I had raced to the music store, memorized it all and raced to class just to rob him of his 'moment'. Still a favorite.
Back Chat has a killer solo and awesome funky drum loops. Hot Space was great just because they dared to do their thing: go beyond themselves and stretch boundaries but people hate it because it is not "metal" or "pop". Weird.
Well done, great work on the Queen Albums here too. Of course my list differs because it's not yours : ) Just as you said : ) #5 The Game #4 News of the World #3 Queen 1 #2 The Miracle #1 A night at the Opera
1. Sheer Heart Attack 2. A Night at the Opera 3. Jazz 4. News of the World 5. Innuendo 6. A Day at the Races 7. Queen II 8. The Works 9. The Game 10. Hot Space 11. Queen 12. The Miracle 13. A Kind of Magic 14. Made in Heaven
My favorite álbum from them is also "A Night at the Opera", and you did mention "Seaside Rendezvous", which is one of my three favorites. But you forgot to mention "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon", which has my favorite Brian May solo of all time (at the end of the song), and one of my favorite Queen songs of all time: "Good Company".
Your ranking nearly matches mine. Glad you go into detail album-by-album. Don't know if they are up your alley, but I'd like to see a ranking of Def Leppard albums.
I have all their studio albums on vinyl, except "Made in Heaven" and, of course, the one with Rodgers, but the truth is that "A Night at the Opera" is their only album without a weak track
Great video for a favourite band. My ranking: 1. Queen II 2. A Night at the Opera 3. A Kind Of Magic 4. The Game 5. Made In Heaven 6. The Miracle 7. Innuendo 8. News Of The World 9. Hot Space 10. Jazz 11. A Day At The Races 12. The Works 13. Queen I 14. Sheer Heart Attack 15. Flash Gordon
Poor old ‘Hot Space’! I knew it would be bottom of your list even before I clicked ‘play’. I hated it when it came out but I like the disco-influenced tunes a lot more now. I have to say, despite liking Queen a lot (they were the first band I loved), their albums for me are for the most part very patchy. As a singles act they were superb (‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ is one of my favourite songs of all time). In terms of the range and ambition of their music, I think they were the true heirs to The Beatles. I’m not saying they were as good, but their willingness to constantly try new things was so laudable. A very important part of Queen’s sound was music hall, which has been arguably the most influential form of music on British pop over the decades. And this ties in with the fact that British bands just love to dress in drag. They all did it! The Stones (the ‘Have You Seen Your Mother Baby’ sleeve), Led Zep (the inner sleeves to ‘Physical Graffiti’) and Queen (the video to ‘I Want to Break Free’) to name but three. Part of the reason Freddie Mercury was and is so loved in Britain is that he continued a long line of camp, extrovert entertainers that can be traced back to the bawdy, saucy days of Victorian music hall. By the way, I saw Queen twice with Freddie (including his last ever show with them at Knebworth in 1986) and I’ve seen them twice with Adam Lambert. Now by his own admission Adam is no Freddie Mercury, but their show is so damn enjoyable it’s not true. I would urge anyone who loves the band to see them as they are on fire. Their show in Bologna, Italy a couple of years back was one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Patrick Crowther Queen were my first favourite band as well, got A night at the opera for my eleventh birthday and went out a couple of days later to buy Queen 2. Totally agree with Don’t stop me now it’s a magnificent tune, Never saw them with Freddie because I boycotted them for a few years over the Sun City debacle. As you say the current line up are fantastic live saw them at the O2 a couple of years ago and going to see them again in Birmingham in June.
Great ranking Pete I would have a hard time listing my top 5 but I would have to include News of the World in that top 5 as it's one of my all time favorite Queen albums although We will Rock You/Champions are probably the most overplayed Queen songs. NATO is also a musical masterpiece never tire of listening to that LP.
1-Queen 2-Sheer heart attack 3-Queen 2 4-A night at the opera 5-Jazz 6-A day at the races 7-The game 8-Innuendo 9-News of the world 10-Hot space 11-A kind of magic 12-The works 13-The miracle 14-Made in heaven 15-Cosmos. First band along with Stones I got into Hot Space I listen to more these days as I know the others inside out so it's for me a change, made in heaven just as Pete said in video feels odd. First album(s) I got were live magic(awesome live a kind of magic!) And Stones dirty work so I have fondness for them which transcends their actual merits, nostalgia. Even dog most of Roger Taylor solo albums.
