Why do we talk about Queen today? Because they did change and kept going in the 80s. To keep themselves interested they had to change. Without the 80s we would have no Live Aid or Magic Tour. There would be no Another One Bites the Dust or "Ice Ice Baby". Queen were smart. The hits they made in the 80s cemented the group as one of the biggest in history. Live Aid and The Magic tour took them to a new level. They would most likely have broken up if they didnt change. Freddie talked about it several times.

It seems like, only those who truly love and understand music can appreciate Queen’s versatility in their songs. What really separates Queen from other bands is that they are 4 extremely intelligent genius musicians, song writers. They all have different backgrounds, and so diverse in their musical writings. There’s just not enough words to describe the amazing talents among each of them and their unique creativity in their musical styles… They’re truly the greatest musicians!!

My mom became a huge queen fan at around 60, blow up a couple speakers playing it do loud lol. She passed at 70 and wanted to have this song played at her funeral, but family said no.. I really wish we would have.

This huge hit added a lot to Queen's fan base world wide. The single sold 3 million copies in the US alone hitting #1 in a half dozen countries. It was a live favorite in which Freddie engaged the audience successfully as usual. It doesn't matter what genre you attach to it, they made it work for them. Enjoying your reactions, still.

Fans liked putting a Queen album and having a mixofsounds, just as we Zeppelin fans liked a mix. Hearing bands stretch themselves, and do it well, was fun. Place an album on the turntable, and let it play! Queen MELODIOUS, QUEEN STADIUM ROCK, QUEEN FUNK... I found it all a joy as tracks unfolded.

The black stations thought they were a black group, Roger said black folks were showing up at the concert and were shocked they were white English men. Freddie sang this over and over in the studio till his throat bled just trying to get perfect for John's song. I like the song. Great reaction

This is why you need to see your way through to the end of the Queen catalog to witness the return to the old Queen formula(after the Hot Space album) that was applied. I did always like this song and once again Freddie’s vocals are ridiculous!!

I grew up in NYC starting in 1978 possibly and recall as a youngster that the black radio station thought this song was from a black group. Back then there no wikipedia. WBLS is huge up north.

I suspect the album cover shot was taken during the recording of the video for, 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love.' Which, if you haven't heard it, (yet), is a rockabilly type tribute to Elvis. As for, 'Another One Bites The Dust'; it's pretty much the Bohemian Rhapsody for the 80's. Or, at least, one of these most stand-out songs that they're known for, along side, 'We Are The Champions', and, 'We Will Rock You.' The only difference being that the funk element within it meant it appealed to a wider audience. Which ain't a bad thing, if you just so happen to want to sell more records/increase the attendances at your concerts. 😉 This was the single that got them the oh-so desired recognition in the US. Which is pretty much every bands ultimate goal, as to do so pretty much means you've made it, big-time. This song did that for Queen. The only problem then, is to try and maintain it. But, that's a different story. I don't think any 2 albums from Queen are what you would call the same. Each one is like a snapshot of what the band were doing at the time. So, to compare one from 1974 to 1980 is pretty meaningless. Of course they're going to be different. The band were full of new and interesting ideas in regard to what they wanted to record and perform live, and each album adds to that, as time progressed. Queen, like any band worth its salt, saw the need to change in order to remain relevant to what was going on in the, 'popular music', scene. The 80's heralded the use of synthesizers, and so Queen changed things up accordingly, like any other band who had the ability to do so. It's not going to please all fans, of course, but the old saying about not being able to please all, all of the time, applies. Some all of the time, and all some of the time, but never all, all of the time. What they lose in, 'sticks in the mud', they gain in those open to their new ideas and, to some extent, image change. They didn't want to be seen as a, 'band from the 70's', performing in the 80's. They wanted to be Queen performing in the 80's. And, if things hadn't changed beyond their control, they may well have continued into the 90's and beyond.

If they would have kept repeating themselves people would have grown bored of them, yes they pushed the boundaries and was diverse and that’s why Queen have so many fans. Love the next one Need Your Loving Tonight. The Game is in my top 5 Queen albums along with Shear Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, News of the World and The Works

In real time this was viewed as just Queen doing their thing and changing things up. Everybody loved this album, it fit in with what was going on in the music industry at the time but in a Queen way. I never heard anyone complain about them changing styles. Hot space is the album that I went “WTF” , though I did and do like it it took a little bit of getting used to.

Where is it written a band has to do the same thing over and over. Queen were amazing musicians and obviously didn ‘t give a fig what critics said. So why not just try and do everything that they feel at the moment … and do it better than anyone else. I think they did pretty OK ( it was a living 😂🤣 )

Yeah, John in 1976 during A Day At The Races had the longest hair and was the first who made his haircut much much shorter in 1977 during the News Of The World, You can see it in videos for We Will Rock You and Spread Your Wings!

Maybe the shift in style is more noticable on this album because 1979 was the first year since their debut album without new music, meaning the gap between "Jazz" and "The Game" is (up to this point) the longest, by far. I guess their taste in music/whatever was happening in music changed more in those almost two years, compared to the shorter gaps between the earlier albums. Btw, iirc, this song doesn't use synths at all, it's all guitar effects, reversed piano, etc.

Yep, you summarized my immediate reaction to this song when I first heard it. Wtf? For my taste, this is still just an okay song, way down on my list, but you can't argue with the commercial success. I prefer the live version, which is much heavier and more of a rock song with considerably more guitar. Roger didn't like it - especially the tightness of the drum sound, and Brian had minimal involvement with the recording. A few responses to your comments. 1. Yes they did alter their appearance with shorter hair (though Deacon's is longer - he had a crew cut on the Jazz tour), but the story behind the album cover is simply that it's a shot taken from the set of the Crazy Little Thing Called Love video shoot, where they were all sporting a biker look. However, on the album's inner record sleeve, this is where fans were first introduced to Freddie with a moustache. Another wtf moment for long-time fans. 2. There were no synths used in this song. What sounds like synths is Brian feeding his guitar through a harmonizer as he did in Get Down Make Love. Although they did use a synth for the first time on this album, it was used sparingly. This changed dramatically starting with Hot Space. 3. The "funky" rhythm guitar in the verses is played by john on a Telecaster; Brian has said in interviews that John played the part better than he did and that he himself found it difficult to play that style.

It was their only song thay went to #1 on the US Billboard charts. John Deacon had spent the day with Niles Rogers and his band and then came to his Queen band members with this. Niles Rogers is well known for the song Freak Out with C'est Chic and he wrote Let's Dance with David Bowie. He actually writes with a lot of artists. I always loved that Queen never had just one sound. It helped that they had 4 different songwriters in the band. They're still as popular as they ever were. They sold out their US tour last fall in a couple of hours.

It is different yes, but that does not mean it is not bad. They had transition periods yes and getting more radio friendly. As stated John was heavily influenced by Chic. Thanks for all your reactions!

Interesting you say Nile Rodgers at the same point I was thinking about it.... those reverse sounds sound like reverse piano chords... I know Chic were a big influence on John Deacon around this time.... gotta love tracks like "My Forbidden Lover"...

Fun fact: there is no synthesizer in this song. All the effects are reached by tape manipulation (what you thoughts were synth is just piano notes played backward). Tbh, even though this is the first Queen album to use the synthesizer, it was only used in the intro to "Play the Game" and I think in "Rock It" (Roger Taylor's song). Only their next album would use the synths to the fullest extent.

Justin you being a bass player would like "Hot Space".it's funk rock,not disco Donna Summer/ Bee gees shit.After hot space they returned to rock.The last real record with Freddie, Innuendo, features all the tempo changes and even layered harmonies of their classic sounds.Show must go on is amazing,and Innuendo is art.Thanks bud this is great stuff

I think you might struggle with this album, Justin. I did when it came out. But when you put it in context of the previous 2 albums, they were liable to do something so different in order to move away from their earlier multi produced and layered sound and style. I was a 19 year old Navy lad in a club in Norway when they played this in the summer of 1980. First time I heard it. I was stunned that it was my beloved Queen!😢 Then they played Rock It (Prime Jive) a later track on the album....hmm?apart from the intro. I got over it all eventually 😂 I guess in any fashion industry in this capitalist world you need to change and fit with your audience. They struggled as a band for a while after this and the next album, I feel, but shit happens and sometimes you have to have a no pain no gain attitude to survive in that environment. I think history has vindicated their decisions. But a low point for me just from a personal taste and quality perspective. Pleasing the market can go f@$k itself as far as I'm concerned. Later albums were more like what they were capable of both in quality, sound and style in my opinion

It works. The drums are dull but effective. I like all the other elements. Talking heads have been funkier. I prefer older Queen BUT I understand that they wanted to try new things.

Something you need to understand is that most bands dont stay the same and sound the same over time, except maybe AC/DC or Motorhead. The musical climate was very different in 1980 versus the mid 1970s. If they had made another album like A night at the Opera or News of the World in 1980, no one would have bought it. They stayed relevant by updating their sound and image, as many other bands from the 1970s did. Unfortunately, they didn't have the same kind of success with Hot Space. Instead they tried to recapture the success of Another one bites the dust by making an album that mostly follows that style and it didn't work. I'm not really a big fan of their 80s music, with a few exceptions. It seems more bland and less inventive. They did make an artistic comeback with their final album, Innuendo in 1991, but it was short lived as Freddy passed away later that year. The album they released after his death doesn't have the same energy and comes off like a collection of discarded tracks, so I dont count that as a proper Queen album. If you stop going through their discography after The Game, you won't be missing much, but Innuendo is worth giving a listen.

When "The Game" came out and I listened, I got the impression they were trying to bridge the rock and Top 40 genre's. It didn't seem to fit neatly into either but their better "rock" tunes had a difficult time getting air play on the radio. I thought they were trying to capture two audiences and increase their air play time. Just my personal impressions of the time...

John has received a bit of grief in the comments lately, this is his redemption. Out sold Bho Rhap by a million copies and their biggest hit at the time. Brian has said that buying their own studio was an influence in their change of direction, as they had a bunch of new toys to play with. The crunching sounds in the middle, are Brian bending the neck of the Red Special (his only contribution to the track)

I don't know why people keep on repeating this. Bohemian Rhapsody is Queen's best selling song. Another One Bites The Dust was perhaps the best selling song in the US, but that is not the whole world.

Look I don’t know why there’s even a debate about this. As a band they were together for 20 years spanning three decades. Are they going to be relevant if they still have long hair and makeup and write the same type of music they were writing in the seventies. People would say what wrong with them they’re stuck in a time warp. No they had to grow and change just the the way the world did around them and musical tastes changed too. Freddie once said when he saw old photos of himself he looked ridiculous with the long hair and such but at the time it was relevant and it was something he had to do. Well it’s the same with the music. As a band they have to change and grow. The world around them is changing. I actually like 80s Queen better. Especially in live performances. By this time they are very secure in their abilities, they know each other like the back of their hand and can improvise, and they’re more down to earth, not so theatrical.

Although I don’t always agree with your point of view it’s still really cool to hear someone coming into songs for the first time . Hot space is not as bad as everyone makes out 5or 6 decent songs in the album

Queen do rock “à la Queen”, do funk “à la Queen”, and Jazz “à la Queen” as we say in France. I thank them for renewing themselves otherwise today no one would know Queen except for Borhap, We will rock you and We are the champions, which would be a shame. I don't really understand your point of view. It's 2024, it's more interesting to consider them from this point of view, not like the fans of 1980. I LOVE Dragon Attack, lol

Two things about this song. One, I can't hear it without thinking of Weird Al's parody. Two, the first time I took CPR, they said that chest compressions should be done at a rate of 100 per minute, and this song clocks in at 100 bpm, making it perfect to hum while performing this potentially life-saving procedure. Just don't hum it out loud, I guess. When I went for my recert a few years later, they said use "Staying Alive" to set the cadence. But I hate that song.

Believe me, Live Killers is absolutely AMAZING!! Please, dont base your decision not to do LK on a few comments. The guitar solo for example is EPIC. They made a few edits on Death on 2 legs, cause of legal issues with their former manager Norman Sheffield. and they chose the best version of each song from their European live tour. Can anybody confirm they took "get down make love" from 5 different versions?? I dont believe it! thats quite an accusation, actually, so maybe that person can show us some proof of that? and i have never heard that story before and can find no proof of it online. So, please, reconsider, Justin, YOU WON'T REGRET LiVE KILLERS. It is that amazing closing of an era, like you suggested.

Definitely don't understand because you had to be there on that journey, anyone can look back and analyse what doesn't even matter. I was a kid in the 60s a teenager in the 70s and what you young guys don't understand at all is how much new sounds and what they could do in the studio was evolution of music. By the way Live Killers was epic.

I am totally sick of this song, I don’t care if I ever heard it again. That being said, I will always have a little bit of nostalgic love for because it was the first song I learned how to play on the drum kit.😂

I love the bassline on this song but to be honest, for me it suffers from overplay. Great song, but more of an anthem for stadium live shows in my opinion. One of the most iconic basslines in rock, along with Under Pressure. When John gets it, he hits it hard and he scores. This song is the largest selling song in the entire Queen catalog. We all think it would be Bohemian Rhapsody but it is actually this song. Like We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, everyone knows this song.

Since I don't know many of these songs except for the obvious ones I have been doing a pre- listen to the ones I don't know. Boy Justin is really gonna not like the next one. Talk about a basic borefest...
