This interview presents the professional musician and entertainer Freddie, who was always very honest during his rare interviews, he never hid the problems that occured in the band.

The interesting thing about bands that spanned the 70's and 80's was how well they made that transition from the more progressive, arty era to the post-punk, new wave era. Those were huge changes in the musical business and what audiences were hungry for. Queen was actually well positioned to make that change compared to a lot of other 70's bands. And yeah, when Freddie actually referred to what they do as "product" it was a big insight into his view of the business.

Their keyboard player, Spike Edney, is still touring with Queen & Adam Lambert. They were all college students when they started. Freddie and Roger actually roomed together.. Freddie joined Brian and Roger's band, "Smile" and eventually changed to "Queen".

One of my favorite Freddie interviews! This would be a great time to take a look at the 1982 Milton Keynes Concert...pretty much the only place I've heard them do the songs from Hot Space. Freddie makes a statement about the new songs to the audience, and the band performs them as awesomely as usual. At about this time I think they were rated as the most highly paid individuals in the UK, so taking a bit of time off wasn't a financial risk, but rather one in terms of popularity. Anyway when they went back to the studio, they gave us "The Works".

Hi Justine....great reaction to this interview. There's another interview with just Brian and Roger at the exact same time (1982) by the exact same interviewer. What strikes me about that interview and the interview with Freddie, is that they ALL are on the same page with regard to the importance of the visual aspects of the show, their understanding of each other's needs almost instinctively (to give each other room when needed) and, perhaps most importantly, how ALL of them realize how essential it is to stay together. By this time, both Brian and Roger had tried some solo stuff...so they know - perhaps more than even Freddie does at this point - what it is like to try to do music apart from Queen. As you say in your reaction, it isn't easy to get to the level of success that they achieved working as a unit within QUEEN and in the interview BOTH Roger and Brian say that it is ESSENTIAL for a band to stay together. The interview with Brian and Roger, 1982 is on RU-vid. You might want to give it a listen. After listening, I really understood where their heads were at this point in their career.

Queen formed with Freddie, Brian and Roger in 1970 (John joined in 1971) and the band broke up in 1991 after Freddie's death. (The three of them were friends a couple of years before forming Queen.) Their music to me stayed uniformly very good despite changing over the years. And I think they would have continued on and still been together today. Their live concerts were what made them such fan favorites--and luckily there are some that were filmed--and are very entertaining. 1974 at the Rainbow, 1981 at Montreal, 1982 at Milton-Keynes and 1986 at Wembley are the best and need to be watched straight through like you were there to be fully appreciated.

They were so connected it was instinct, they would do a little rehearsal before each concert, and they pretty much would play some songs differently at each venue. Brian and Roger fought all the time, Freddie would defuse it, as a matter of fact Roger said if it wasn't for Freddie Roger and Brian would never have stayed together. This is a great Freddie interview. Great reaction.

Hot Space did not do well for Queen standards of sales. But it does contain some great music! As Betsey said the concert at Milton Keynes was absolutely fantastic. Cool Cat is a totally different side to Queen and also Back Chat. Action this Day is a personal favorite of mine, yes they played a set list but all songs played differently than the official version. These guys were together almost twenty years. Hard to believe, but they were family. Brian and Freddie had the most arguments, I believe.
@deboraclark5791
@deboraclark5791 11 месяцев назад
Brian was very sensitive, he got upset easily, Freddie was a perfectionist and would make everyone do takes over and over, which upset members, every member would argue over every note, till perfect. But it was Freddie that mainly directed everything, just look at something of the inside studio work, it's amazing.

No they took breaks and worked with all different collaborators throughout their twenty years. All four of them. Not just at that time. Brian and Roger used to conflict with each other according to them, Freddie was the peacemaker. Actually they were successful in their solo projects but not necessarily with Queen fans because it was a different type of music.
@marciebulsaraorcutt
@marciebulsaraorcutt 11 месяцев назад
....So, regarding the new keyboardist: I think the "big deal" about that for Queen, was that they'd always been very tight-knit - just the four of them. And, because Freddie always wanted to be able to be completely spontaneous when he went onstage (he had said that when he went onstage, "I NEVER know what's going to happen!")... all the band members had become adept at reading Freddie - and each other - and always smoothly adjusting in-the-moment. So, to introduce a fifth person, it had to be someone who could do that, as well.

It actually sounds like they did run through the show but it was mainly for the tech rehearsals getting the light show down, getting the keyboard player up to snuff etc…..they just weren’t focusing on the music as a band like they normally would. They still rehearsed but not to their normal level.
@aukebakker887

Actually, most of the arguing is between brian and freddie. Having very different musical taste and both being perfectionists is an explosive cocktail:)
@mori1bund
@mori1bund 11 месяцев назад
The most arguing was between Brian & Roger - according to Brian & Roger. ^^ Brian said Freddie was usually the mediator in the band. And when it comes to musical tastes, Freddie's taste was all over the place: he was into Jazz and classical music as much as he was into Rock and Hard Rock. He wrote some of Queen's heaviest songs like Ogre Battle or Stone Cold Crazy, but went also in the R&B or dance direction. But Brian's taste was also more flexible than people give him credit - as long as it features a guitar: he wrote everything from hard rock to folk to prog to pop to even R&B ("Dancer" from the Hot Space album is from Brian), and did all the orchestral stuff on the Flash Gordon soundtrack, which lead to more soundtrack jobs for Brian as a solo artist.

The difficult one is Brian, he has always been very hardheaded. Brain and Roger fought like cats and dogs for years, Brian did not really get along with John Deacon. Brian and Freddie fought sometimes. I would say most of the fighting was centred around Brian May, he and Roger still fight on email to this day.
@mori1bund

Freddie wanted a keyboarder because he didn't want to spend all the time at the piano. He wanted to run around on stage and do his thing as an entertainer.

The keyboard player was Spike Edney?...he was from the Boomtown Rats, with Bob Geldof....And he was on stage for the concerts in Wembley 1986...Freddie was all about the technical detail....they did rehearse as well as all the other stuff they had to deal with...remember Live Aid?....Every act had 20 minutes onstage...so it all had to be timed..and decisions made about what songs to include...they bought alarm clocks and rehearsed for a week using the clocks to time themselves...they were all about the detail...and you can see that in their performances🤩

Can't resist sharing. I've read they rehearsed and DID heavily rehearse/routine the songs 'in studio' before going on tour cause their plan -- staged presentation -- wouldn't mirror album version. Rehearsal emphasis on tour was mostly technical since that wasn't possible 'in studio'.

If I remember correctly, it was Fred Mandel who played the synth solo on the studio recording of I Want to Break Free. That doesn't say anything about whether or not he was playing live with Queen around that time, of course.

Don’t believe it Hot Space was a good album. Under Pressure, Cool Cat, Body Language, Back Chat, Action, etc all great. Milton Keynes concert has a lot of that album and it was a great concert. At the time, Queen fans didn’t like it because the music was different for Queen more R and B and disco included.
