I think it was deemed 'bad' at the time because it was so, so different. Queen had always done different, but I think some fans at the time thought it a step too far. I love it, particularly Cool Cat! Plus let's face it, Freddie sounds amazing!
Yeah, lots of people hated this. Yes, it's different, but I love it! Funky as heck in parts, cruisy to (Cool Cat), grungy (Action This Day). Then of course, Under Pressure. Yes, it's different to other Queen albums, but Queen were about conquering new genres. I think it was the use of drum machines and other electronics that turned people off. Their loss!!
This album has truly grown on me over the years. The tracks are very much suited to Freddie's voice, totally showcasing his stellar range. Action This Day was a brilliant track performed live...Freddie in his element, absolutely owning every lyric.
Yes! Awesome to see you doing Hot Space! I do like Hot Space, as you said it is very up beat and fun. People just did not like the different style of music, at this stage they were burning disco records in the States. People were far more divided musically, you only listened to one type of music, I think people are far more openminded these days. The album was slightly ahead of it's time, Michael Jackson said he was constantly listening to Hot Space while recording Thriller, and Prince was a fan of Queen, Freddie and Brian also liked Prince a lot. John Deacon was excellent at all of these funky basslines, Freddie was singing his ass off. That being said Body Language is perhaps the worst song Freddie ever wrote, however I can still appreciate the experimentation and the bassline. I would still rank it higher then Radio Gaga, which feels like a paint by numbers song. The live versions of Hot Space songs are amazing.
I have always loved this album from day one. I can’t understand how people hated it. Roger didn’t like it either He said it was like walking into a gay club .Brian’s guitar is like a Voice . ❤Increddie, as well as Deaky’s bass. So happy your back with Queen💕
Think a lot of people have come to appreciate Hot Space today, more so than when it originally came out. Disco was falling out of favor and fans certainly didn’t want Queen to do disco! I love “Cool Cat”! It has a great Motown vibe. Back Chat, so good also.
John Deacon did everything on Back Chat except for: Vocals, Electronic drums and guitar solos. Everything else is Deacon it might not be easily enjoyable for the Queen fans who don't like this type of funky r&b disco style of music from Queen but Deacon's musicianship cannot go unnoticed. (Sorry for the bad grammar)
Backchat is awesome. I think all of Deacons songs hit the button. He was a much stronger writer than some may give him credit for. What he did create have been the some of the strongest tracks they made.
@@RichardLaurence Do you know where I could someone playing his rhythm guitar part either in another one bites the dust or back chat. I'm curious to see how its played in person and not just from what you hear
Brian May on that third track was nice! So far I'm digging all of it.I have so much to dig in after this album. I admit I was wrong. Queen has to be the greatest group ever, just based on their diversity. They could do it all.
It really is not a bad album just different for Queen. Freddie's voice fits it perfectly even though the others were not thrilled about the album. It has some really good music if you forget it is by Queen and the types of music that usually comes from them it really is a great album.
Listen to this (Dancer) then listen to Billy Jean! Fred and Michael were good friends. Michael Always admired Freddie. He would come to watch him perform. This was the time when all dance movies were being made. (Body language)
Great reaction Rory , people were a bit narrow-minded back in those days but Queen were always looking to change direction and this one has aged well in many ways , I always thought "Body Language" was a brilliant single but didn't really do much sales wise , maybe because it was a bit too saucy for many , ever see the record sleeve for that single ?! Now you've heard the album versions you should go back and listen to the live versions of "Staying Power" and "Action this day" from the Milton Keynes gig again , as they are both fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hi brother Greetings from Cape Town South Africa 😊 Hope you’re doing well, thanks for your enthusiasm and positivity - in all that you do! It’s much appreciated 💜
You should check out a full out disco song Freddie made during this time, for the Metropolis movie, he recorded it in the style of Donna Summer, it is called Love Kills, I think it was top 10 hit.
There are 2 versions of Love Kills. The original disco version by Freddie and a remastered version also with Freddie singing, but it is not very disco. Think Brian & Roger changed it. On Queen channel. I like both versions.
@@Lilah1754 There are actually 3 versions. The first is the original disco version. Brian made the ballad version a few years ago. There is also actually a pretty cool or rather interesting rock version, search for that one. I don’t know when the rock version was made, perhaps with the release of Never Boring box set.
I have been listening to this album lately. If I had heard this back in the day I would of.loved it. Queen will be around for ever. Amazon music is using Cool Cat on their latest commercial.
Most of Queen's music is TIMELESS...always sounds fresh, different, whether layered vocals, music hall style or hard rock. Most of HOT SPACE is OF A PARTICULAR TIME...that is the difference. So if you give over to that moment in time, you gotta get a kick out of it. The club scene dominated and I think Queen was viewed as late to the party. But for Freddie out on the club scene & consumed by it, he wanted to shout from the rooftops in the way he knew he could. No one can deny the place in history for UNDER PRESSURE.
They were ahead of time by 5 or so years with this album. I remember reading about the negative comments about this album before I decided to buy it. I was a teen in 1993 when I did so and thought, oh my they were right. It was ignorance really, as when I started to listen to it more and more, I came to realise this is brilliant. Freddie and the boys sound strong and as others have commented already, it undoubtedly influenced Michael Jackson...
Queen proved that they can turn their dance music into great performance tracks as we saw and heard at the Milton Keynes concert with you. I like Back Chat a lot. The thing that I think is different is that this music subsitutes 'motion' for "emotion." The lyrics aren't as important. But what ever Queen attempts to do, they do well. Happy to see you doing justice to this album.
Best moments in the BACK CHAT video are the exchanges from John toward Freddie. Says everything about that bond. Of course, special mention too for Freddie's dance club moves....
Great upload! Now that I'm a bit older (39) I suddenly realize that I DO love 'Body Language'! Thanks for that! 😁 Meanwhile, it's been a while since I've listened to the album tracks but i've always loved 'Hot Space'... Maybe because i'm an 80's kid 😅 And Queen was way ahead of its time of course. Cheers man 🥂
Damn, I am MAD I didn't listen to this back then. Deacon sounds good!!!! I would love this album with the production of their JAZZ album. Roger's drums were so deep on that.
Why are people so picky😂 I play this to work out and clean floors!! It’s fun … and then there’s always Deaky being awesome! And what the heck Freddie feels good and I like that ✌🏼😂
I don't hate this album, it is just a different vibe, leaning into the Disco sound that was dominating music at this time. In my opinion, Brian's guitar saves this album because his solos bring me back to the Queen feel. Many of these songs would have been perfect for Michael Jackson, but they are a stretch for Queen. People didn't like this album because everything was disco and rock fans were disappointed that Queen tried their hand at it too. To be honest, if you are going to talk about disco albums, this one still comes out on top because Queen always smashes anything that they do, their attention to detail is unsurpassed. I would definitely call this album disco-funk.
Too much cocaine messes up your decision faculties kiddies. Queen had Hot Space, Metallica Load. Hot Space actually has some bangers that are WAY underrated in their discography, but all-in-all it is just a weird statement. John Deacon's licks on this album ... holy hell they are delicious! This is definitely John's album, but then Brian comes in with some of the most ferocious soloing and riffing ever and you go, "Oh yeah this is Queen!". Freddie? Well Freddie can do no wrong can he? The only one who sort of ends up in the background on this album is Roger. There are also some real nice rockers on this album which people seem to forget about.
I think this album would have done a lot better if they had put it out two or three years earlier when disco was at it's peak. I wouldn't call it disco but the funk dance beat is a good transition from disco that I think would have made it more popular if released during that time. I still think Queen's early hard core rock fans would not have liked it, simply because the two genres attracted completely different audiences, but I believe it would have had even more support in the U.S., certainly on the two coasts, along the lines of Another Once Bites The Dust and crossing over onto the R&B charts. I have heard John affectionately called "Disco Deacy" by some and I believe this album was likely his idea and strongly supported by Freddie. According to Brian, Freddie wanted to hear Queen played in the dance clubs he was frequenting. It appears Freddie took responsibility for the fail of the album when it did not sell well, stating that "they all hate him for it" (pushing them in that direction). When I listen to this album, Michael Jackson's Thriller album comes to mind. You can tell it had a big influence on Michael's album.
Its a "bad album" when compared to the rest of their catalogue. Its actually kinda decent/good, but all the other albums are just so amazing that this one kinda gets a shadow cast upon it
Bro I really started to like following you Queen jurney. You also speak the truth. You are not biased or with prejudice. first can I like chat with you somehow? secondly I want to donate to you, how can I bro?
That album that was different a real experimental album with all the changes in music going on. Pissed people off who wanted the rocking Queen. Not my favourite but needed to break that 70’s rut
A big favourite of mine . . . tho' my somewhat prudish streak used to make me wince a bit. BUT, Hot Space has my kitchen chores done in record time. . .smiling, too! Body Language, wow!!! QUEEN, great musicians . . .Brian and Rog might have mourned this but over the years it's a money maker. I love that Freddie has art work credit. Am sorry unable to read info thru the bright ink. Betcha Freddie didn't like it either.
I know this is late but relistening to rhe albums. You MUST watch the video to Body language uts hysterical mainly because Rogers face always said what he was thinking. In the video Roger looks likehe could kill Freddie 😂😂😂😂. Watch any video when they were forced to mime, just look at Roger xx
From my memory, I think it was not received well because it it was just so different. Until this album, Queen always boasted "no synthesizers"...then Hot Space was almost all synth. You commented "that bass" a few times, but there was no real bass on the track, it was all synth, John didn't even play on the track. Queen didn't lose me as a fan, had been one since 1974, but they lost a fair amount. As Roger said, "It's not Queen, but it's not a bad album."
Staying Power, Action, and Back Chat are much better songs live -- as you saw when you did Milton Keynes concert. Studio-wise not my favorite Queen songs on those three, but still good in that very 80s way. And it's not a bad album at all ... just whiney fans at the time being upset that it wasn't a rock and roll album
I didn't like this album in the beginning cause of all the synthesizers but after hearing them play the songs live it help change my mind. Brian plays what would be synth solos on the album on guitar and Roger doesn't use the drum machine as much.
there a probably book writen about the eitees musik..it came from the shitmusic in the sixties(zappa as a furiur against)and seventies got the melodies and the symphonic tutch..then came PUNK..two cords and attiude is it..everything changed at that moment Prince bekame the king and so it is...it is news and it is from asia...take time for our shit media to understand
Sad you didn't do Flash Gordon album 😢 BUT I loooooove Hot Space so it's ok 😊 I can't wait for Put Out the Fire. I think you'll flip 🙃🙃 and your take on Life is Real will be interesting 🙂
Hot space isn’t a bad album, it’s just a departure from their usual style. Personally, I think the album would’ve been better received if the songs sounded more like their live versions, with real drums instead of drum computers and Brian putting guitars on every song.
I was wondering when you'd get around to this album & what you'd think. I bought Hot Space when it came out & swore to never buy another Queen album again; I had limited exposure to Queen & expected something more in the vein of The Game or Jazz. Couldn't have been more wrong, although I find Queen's material to be much more hit/miss after this album.
His fans didn’t like the change. It’s like when Dylan went electric. Freddie and John wanted to make it a club dance album. Roger didn’t like it much either.
One of the reasons Brian and Roger hated this album was the influence of Paul Prentice who wanted Freddie to make the music sound like it would be at home in the gay bars of the time.
@@Danielik25 from Wikipedia: Disliking the new sound, Brian May and Taylor were critical of the influence that Paul Prenter, Freddie Mercury's personal manager between 1977 and 1984, had on the singer.[12] Recalling the recording process in 2011, Taylor openly criticized the direction in which Prenter was taking Mercury (and thus the rest of the band), stating that "[Prenter] wanted our music to sound like you'd just walked in a gay bar...and I didn't". May also noted that the making of the album in Munich took much longer than usual and that all of the band got into "deep emotional trouble" in the city, blaming a mixture of drink, drugs and partying as the reason for the relatively lengthy recording sessions.[13] According to Mack, Queen's producer, Prenter loathed rock music and was in Mercury’s ear throughout the Hot Space sessions.
To me most of the album is pretty good, Body Language is the one I really dislike. Queen took chances from the beginning, this one didn't go over well . Oh well. 😊
All of 80’s Queen? Some one to Love, Dragon Attack, Under Pressure, One Vision, Save Me, Hammer to Fall are some of the good ones from the 80’s IMHO. You might not like Hot Space, but there so many others. Maybe you are just a fan of early Queens catalogue, which is more rock and excellent.
