Sun forger belongs in this deck for sure! Sun forger for a deflecting Palm is my favorite play in my Queen Marchesa deck. Other than that you gave me some cool ideas. Thanks!
so i have been asking for her since day one. you most likly didn't do it for me but. THANKYOU FOR ADDING MY QUEEN TO THIS SERIES YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH THIS HELPS
Joey Schultz, you are well above average! Thanks so much for the excellent content! I dont play a marchesa list but i am adding some of the cards you featured here into my Torbran deck. Its a spellslinger build with a low creature count and i feel that several of these wincons will be extremely vital in wrapping up games for my beloved "Scorchy the 8th Dwarf" deck.
I was expecting to hear Delaying Shield, because with that thing out you will never lose the Monarch. btw I play both Backlash and Delirium in my Xantcha deck ;)
One of my favourite effects in decks which use smaller creatures is Harmonous Archon. It might be better suited to an aggressive build, but it's also an incredible answer to stompy decks - putting out two bodies and then turning everything into a 3/3 is both very good at leveling the playing field if someone is playing trampling creatures who can go over your 1/1s, and can even help out a potential ally by turning their utility creatures into things that can trade with the aformentioned stompy beaters! Also if you get the monarchy stolen, making a 3/3 deathtoucher is nothing to sniff at!
I really like Delaying Shield in my list. Even ignoring the poor rate for preventing the life loss at upkeep, it prevents losing the monarchy, commander damage, infect, and any on hit effects. It also combos with mirage mirror, letting you pile the counters on the mirror which you will never have to pay for.
I love the way you articulate a deck she's my next commander something about her just speaks to me and I'm a graveyard guy so I'm way out of my element thanks bunches!
Same! Building her now but not as politically. I wanna build it human tribal and have a flavorful theme for it. Like the courts, knights, anything that has to do with castles and medieval stuff. It's gonna be fun.
@@hewhoisnamed9050 it turned out great! It’s very on point and I keep getting good stuff each release since I made that comment. Deck is really fun when you’re with friends because they can play on to the monarchy stuff.
Loved this video! I've tweaked and played with various builds of Queenie and have found win cons to be tricky but this has certainly given me some ideas. Whiles kinda boring perhaps, Approach of the Second Sun is a win con that got me a win with her one time, quite unexpectedly as my final opponent was mono blue and had counters for days but seemingly forgot about the spell and used up their counters by the time I got to recasting it. Her monarchy trigger helps you get the spell back faster also which is nice. Was sad for me to see a lot of the cards you took out as some of them where the most "flavourful" in terms of lore but I get that those cards typically aren't super competitive.
I would love to see an update to this deck with some of the new court cards from last year. Very powerful for a monarch build. Also, Decent into Avernus would absolutely smack in this deck as well as inkshield for a nice surprise when your opponents try to get combat damage through!
I dislike pillowfort, but i like this more aggressive take. I've been working on a Queen Marchesa deck for quite a while and should actually finish it someday.
I love the suggestions of Backlash and Delirium. I started playing Backlash several years ago when Blightsteel was printed, and have loved it ever since. I also love Mob Rule, that card is a monster in any playgroup where games are usually won by attacking. For suggested additions, I would say anything that can smooth land drops better. 35 lands is low if you ever expect to cast Ruinous Ultimatum, or cast Marchesa a second or third time. Cutting any nonland for a basic land would probably be best, but if that sounds too bland I would say at least add more utility lands like Windbrisk Heights, Kher Keep, Springjack Pasture, Kor Haven, and/or any of the new Spell/Land modal dualfaces. Thaumatic Compass and Treasure Map and other cards that become utility lands are also great. Is Geode Rager really that good? I admit I haven't played with or against it so far, but it looks pretty weak for a 6-drop that also needs you to keep hitting land drops in a 35-land deck.
Really kept us waiting on that "Long may she reign," didn't you? Glad you know us Joey Now gimme my upping the average for Volrath the Shapestealer or Ertai the Corrupted already dang it.
Man, I love this series. I really hope you do an episode on Meren at some point, thats my baby, and her page definitely still suffers from the precon effect sadly.
I think Niv-Mizzet Reborn would be a great commander to up-the-average of. It can be a tough balancing act getting an optimal ratio of two-colored cards to more or less than two-colored cards. It goes deeper when you try to balance your guild-colored cards out to get as many draws off of Niv-Mizzet's ETB as possible. The commander has a lot of diversity in playstyle, so I'd be interested to see what direction you'd take him.
It’s funny that this would come out now since I’m currently theory crafting my own Queen Marchesa deck. I’m not a fan of most tax style builds since they can always be paid, and prefer the punishment route, so I’m going to be playing Lightmine Field alongside goad and must attack effects like Fumiko, The Lowblood. One card that will help against the big single creature strategies is another royal, Sorceress Queen. It’s an old card most people forget even exists anymore since it hasn’t been reprinted since 5th edition. You can use her politically on attack or defense or to discourage people coming at you. “That’s a nice Marit Lage token you’ve got there, too bad it’s a 0/2 now.”
What's awesome about Queen Marchesa is that she is very flexible. I have a ETB Marchesa, and the deck is so aggressive that is not usual for me to lose the Monarchy, of either way i can flip marchesa to gain it again.
love the deck, just started with commander, but since i live in brasil its hard to play budget, 400 dollars is almost 2.5k reais here, so still on the quest to find a good and budget deck thats like 100 dollars on marquesa, but i love your videos and this video is what made me choose her as a commander.
How do you guys feel about vedalken orrery in this deck? I don’t think of it as an auto include an every edh deck but for queen marchesa it seems really powerful to have the mana open to kill creatures and develop your board
Land - Vault of the Archangels Enchantment - Assemble the Legion Also Access Tunnel does the job of Rogue's passage and for 1 less mana. Hall of Heliod's Generosity is good for making sure we always have our enchantments out to keep up the fence, per se, with Sphere of Safety. Thaumatic Compass/Spires of Orazca is a nice way to keep enemies from taking Monarch from us. I'm also a big fan of Palace Siege.
Bladed Pinions + Entangler makes people never want to attack into Marchesa. Personal opinion is Entangler is probably the most underrated card I've ever seen.
i would recomend soul snare its verry good at stopping discouraging attackers and spirit mantle incase someone manages to steel monarch and ink shield can stop combat damage and make alot of blockers
A really interesting choice! But i think shes a very special case, as she can be taken in a lot of different ways, as she is very open ended. I decided to build a traditional Aristocrats around her, because i wanted one and it was one theme with our queen. But seeing this video, i think i will make space for some interesting political possibilites. Is "political" and "aristocrats" a combination you have experience with, Mr. Joey "True Necromancer" Schultz?
I actually like Kaya, since she can also keep my opponents creatures off the battlefield. It's not often I use her to 'blink' the queen, but keeping an enemy commander off the battlefield for a turn cycle? Yes please.
I don't agree with removing the thriving lands but I can see why you did it, I feel it's too good to have options with your Mana pool especially with tri or more colored decks
Unfortunately, I found the pillowfort strategy to be a little too slow in my meta. So my Queen plays the best defense is the best offense. She is hyper aggressive with attacking creatures bringing tokens tapped and attacking, mixed in with some protection, and some of anthems. My deck brewing makes me OCD a little so when I add something in, it must hall the things in that color. For example, my Queen Marchesa has Elesh Norm, Urabrask, and Sheoldred. She has Sun Titan, Grave Titan, and Inferno Titan. Now, she has all the courts. You get it the picture. She has been a fun deck to play.
I don't think the "hyper-defensive" and "aggro to steal back the monarchy" are mutually exclusive. Using cards like the 3 CMC archetypes, Blade Historian, etc makes opponents taking or holding the monarchy very expensive while allowing you to take it back with relative ease
I really don't understand why you would want to play Queen Marchesa with a pillow-fort strategy. You're basically building your entire deck just keep a bad version of phyrexian arena in play. Planning to keep the monarchy for the entire game is a bastardization and misunderstanding of the monarchy mechanic IMO. Not only this but it also just seems so bad. Drawing an extra card each turn is completely negated by having to play so many defensive "do nothing" cards, sure no one will attack you, but you also aren't a threat to anyone and will probably lose to a combo eventually: I just don't believe in playing mardu defensively and with the weak payoff of "drawing an extra card each turn" is comparable to what other decks are doing. Not to hate but I simply don't get it - please someone explain to me why you would build Queen Marchesa in this way.
