Mary wasn’t said to be plain or ugly. When she became queen, she was almost 40 (old for the era), and had been suffering with severe ill-health for decades, yet her appearance was still complimented, and in her youth Mary was described as “one of the most beautiful and virtuous ladies of the world”. Her looks garnered countless praises e.g. “for beauty of face she hath few fellows that I know”, and “her beauty and grace is incredible”, even from her political enemies. There are few surviving contemporary portraits of Mary so it is hard to judge her appearance on the basis of those alone. The way Mary has been portrayed is so sexist. The nickname “Bloody Mary” is disgustingly unjust when you consider that she was actually the most merciful ruler of her era, and much-beloved in her own time. Part of the propaganda campaign against her has involved reducing this highly intelligent, astute and very capable queen down to a base rendering of her as an ugly old hag, which is not only untrue, but tiresomely superficial. The same thing happened to Richard III with gross exaggerations of his supposedly “grotesque deformities” used to defame his character.

Thank you! I imagine being branded a bastard by her father to the country didn't give Mary very fond feelings towards him when she decided to restore Catholicism. It's extraordinary though how one family's dramas, because they were royal, could turn a country on its head several times!

You're wrong. Elizabeth, his younger sister, was a bastard because she was the daughter of Anne Boleyn, a marriage not recognized by Rome. Mary was the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, the legitimate wife of Henry VIII.

I thoroughly enjoy all your videos and talents. The music is perfect 👌 I can't begin to imagine how hopeless and sad Mary must have felt being rejected by her father and replaced with Elizabeth.

Always love these videos!!! People look so much prettier (or handsome depending on male/female) when shown this was rather than the portraits. Thank you for all your hard work. So very interesting to see how people looked when lifelike rather than the paintings (although the paintings are fabulous too). ❤

De hecho de adulta ella no era fea, era extremadamente blanca con unos ojos azules hermosos y un cabello rojizo dorado, y en su adolescencia fue considerada extremadamente hermosa

Nicely done!!! Mary's mother was Catherine of Aragon by her first marriage with Henry VIII, she was the sister of Joanna the Mad who became the mother of two Habsburg Holy Roman Emperors Charles V and Ferdinand I,right?!. In 1554 Mary I married to Philip II, Habsburg King of Spain, they were cousins, likely I guess.. 🆗️. By the way, I am happy to be interested in what I am watching this video clip. I am definitely proud of your great job on those events of Mary's lifespan 👏👏.. With my honest heart, loyalty and big respect. 😉👍

It's nicely done, however all the late portraits of her don't show accurate hair colour-they are darkened to more brownish red. She had golden strawberry blond hair(rather dark shade of that), a very golden colour in real life. Just like her mother and grandmother Isabella. Nowadays you can only see that in few undarkened copies of her portraits or -and only under certain lighting- in Fitzwilliam portrait or in portrait (imo mis)labelled as lady Mary Sidney-which is identified as lady Sidney only due to non-contemporary label but it is spitting image of Mary. However Fitzwilliam portrait as many others from this time has bit of pigment instability in skintones and as result her nose looks flat.

Mary had the misfortune to be born in a royal dynasty that didn’t want her because of being female. She was pretty (paintings in those days made everyone look frumpy). She would have made someone a wife and mother of children but she was unable to do a ‘good’ marriage because of her being declared illegitimate. She could have had such a different happy life. Instead she became bitter and vengeful.

The version with the short hair really resembles the Tudor men , in my humble opinion. Like the young versions of her father and uncle, even with her grandfather. I also don't think she was ugly. But the portraits at the time have had a certain style, which were not always flattering.

Lady Jane Grey didn't 'seize the throne'. She was named successor by Edward and renounced it in an attempt to save her life. She was only 17 when Mary had her killed

That you say that "Bloody Mary" scares you shows, the manipulation of the Protestants against the English Catholic queen. You forget, that his father beheaded two wives and murdered hundreds of thousands of Englishmen, to force Anglicism. That should scare you

Was Phillip a cousin to Queen Mary?
@ionutmihailbarta6677

Yeah. Mary's mother was Katherine of Aragon, who was maternal aunt of Philip's father, Charles Quint. Charles's mother was Queen Juana, Katherine's elder sister.

Thank you. Mary was said to be plain but her mother was noted for being pretty in her youth ( others rather than the usual sycophants saying so) and Henry was known to cut a fine figure as a youth. Happens sometimes, attractive parents snd the offspring is plain. Poor girl, she did not have an easy life. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

Trauma can alter hormones which could alter your looks. So it could be that she was traumatized and never quite grew into her woman looks. Bc you can almost see that her features were pretty but not nice all together.

She gets a bad rap. We don't say bloody Henry, which he was. Parliament approved of the executions. She was the first real woman ruler of England and there would be no Elizabeth without Mary. There was very little choice to marry except to marry the Spanish prince. France was the traditional enemy of England. She wasn't going to marry a German protestant. Henry tried that and it ended in disaster. She put down at least 2 rebellions.
