Buckingham Palace announced yesterday that Camilla, the Queen Consort will be crowned in May with Queen Mary’s crown, the crown made for and used by Queen Mary at the 1911 coronation. That is a very sensible decision - a good political and aesthetic choice. In this short video I thought I would talk through the history and significance of the crown for you and why I think it is such a good decision.

Hello everybody, thanks for all the comments about the reduction in the number of crown arches. I produced the video before that detail was made public. It will be most interesting to see how that looks.

Hello, I'm a bit disappointed about this! Queen Mary's Crown looks really superb as it is! I think the reduction to 4 half arches will make the Crown look a bit 'empty'. The arches themselves are very thin and beautifully shaped. I hope it will look ok on the day!

@@reggiebosanquet1525 I *TOTALLY* agree with you ! Why remove 4 out of 8 arches ? It seems to me that this was not necessary... It looks good as it is. The Crown will look quite small compared to King Charles'. Too bad !!! I would have preferred Queen Camilla to wear the crown of Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI at their Coronations. An excellent choice, especially as this crown was created with the intention of being reused by subsequent consorts. Avoids the unnecessary excess of commissioning a new crown, also the controversy of the late Queen Mother's crown.

mary's 1911 crown feels decidedly more art nouveau than art deco to me.. . i get strong deco elements from elizabeth's 1937 crown, but i guess maybe that's just me.
@timhazeltine3256
@timhazeltine3256 Год назад
Yes, 1910 is a bit early for the Art Deco style, but within the bounds of the Art Nouveau style. Its Art Nouveau motifs include an emphasis on curvilinear forms and delicate attenuated profiles. Very unlike the Queen Mother's Art Deco crown with its chunky geometric, almost angular forms and profiles.

This is an excellent choice. Queen Mary commissioned and paid for her crown at her own expense and wanted it to be used for future Queens Consort so it is nice that it will finally be used again after 112 years. It also sidesteps the tricky problem of the Koh-i-Noor which is claimed by multiple countries. Cullinan III, IV and V were all the personal property of Queen Mary which she left to her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II and they have been set in her crown before so only minor adjustments will have to be made. As the diamonds were interchangeable they can easily be removed so that Queen Camilla can wear them as brooches again. I look forward to seeing it at the Coronation.

I agree, the choice of using Queen Mary's crown is a very sensible idea. When Queen Mary attended her sons coronation in 1937 the détachable arches were removed and so the crown was worn as a circlet. The Koh-i-Nor diamond had been removed to be put into the new queen consorts crown. Queen Mary filled the hole in her crown/circlet by using the Cullinan V diamond brooch, perhaps it could be done again for Queen Camilla.

I had to laugh at Queen Elizabeth referring to the 94 ct and 63 ct Cullinan III and IV as "granny's chips". I can only assume this was delivered tongue-in-cheek. At least I hope so. @Shalott63
@Shalott63 Год назад
I think the chips thing refers to the other gems being so to speak 'leftovers' when Cullinans I and II were created from the raw Cullinan diamond. Cullinans III-IX, although all impressive, are all small in comparison with I and II, which are monsters.
@gwendixon74

@Shalott63
@Shalott63 Год назад
@@gwendixon74 I didn't mean to deny that the term was meant humorously, just to say that it depended on the relative sizes of the stones - big compared with regular diamonds would still be small compared with the two largest. As for what most people would call the chips, I gather that as well as the nine biggest numbered gems I-IX there were also 96 'small brilliants', as well as a lot of small leftover material that they didn't bother to cut into gemstones (perhaps they got used for industrial purposes). I would agree that the small brilliants were probably distributed around, and very probably the smaller diamonds in e.g. Queen Mary's crown, and for that matter other pieces of her jewellery such as the Cullinan V brooch, include a lot from that source.

It evolves with different Monarchs and Consorts preferences and prevailing tastes and being mindful for what is going on in the country at the time. A crown is always an extravgent item, by definition, but its telling there has been no push to make a new crown.. there being plenty to choose from in the Crown Jewels.

For gem and jewelry nerds like me, it's a dream come true to have the opportunity to view Cullinan I through V at one single event. Hopefully the Camilla Crown, which has a nice ring to it, won't be dismantled following the coronation and thus provide the opportunity for the public to view Cullinan III, IV, and V at the Tower of London. Indeed, most people do not realize that the Cullinan III through IX diamonds were the personal property of the late Queen Elizabeth II and therefore it must be assumed they now belong to her son and heir. Finally, many folks are unaware that the Cullinan Brooch, comprised of Cullinan III and IV, was the most valuable singular object personally owned by Queen Elizabeth II. I hope that mounting these diamonds (along with Cullinan V) into Queen Mary's crown will be seen as an historical precedent, thereby causing these important diamonds to be considered Crown property, just like Cullinan I and II.

As glorious as it was, I was never a great fan of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's crown. It seemed jarring next to both St Edward's Crown and the Imperial State Crown. I always felt Queen Mary's crown was a more aesthetically pleasing design, and the decision to re-use it (which seems very likely to have had considerable input from Queen Camilla) is a good one for all the reasons you've sited. I'm trying to imagine how different it will look with four of the half-arches removed but I think it will look even more delicate and somewhat etherial.

My preference as well. I would love to see the jewels mounted to the crown in exactly this way. And bummer that they allegedly will get rid of half of the arches. I think this move is made to make the crown look more modest, no longer "imperial", not too over the top and ostentatious these days.

Might be worth noting that the eight half arches refer to the European ancestry of Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary where the 8 were and to an extent are common in contrast to here. In addition 8 half arches are 'imperial' so the reduction to 4 reflects the current political situation.

The Cullinan V brooch has actually been set in Queen Mary's crown before! When the Koh-i-Noor was removed and given to Queen Elizabeth, the entire brooch was set in its place so Queen Mary could wear the circlet version of her crown. It is hard to see, since none of the pictures of her wearing it are of very good quality, but if you look hard enough you can see that is the case!

It is indeed a pity that there don't seem to be any good pictures of Queen Mary's crown as worn in 1937, but I agree that if you know what you're looking for you can just tell from some of them that it contains the Cullinan V brooch in the place of the Koh-i-Noor. This is actually very clever: the Cullinan V stone by itself (18.8 carats) is nothing like large enough to fill the space intended for the Koh-i-Noor (105.6 carats) without substantial remodelling of the frame of the crown, but the brooch as a whole is of the right size to fill the space as it is. Another advantage of doing it this way is that the brooch does not need to be broken up, which would be a pity, as although I think not to modern taste it is by now of considerable interest, both for the history (it was made for Queen Mary to wear at the Delhi durbar) and as an example of jewellery design at the time.

However you are incorrect about Queen Camilla being tall. I have met her and she was the same height as me, which is only five feet three tall. It was Diana who was about five feet eight tall, and through her the two princes are over six feet tall, whereas The King is said to be only five feet nine.

@@allanbarton Her late Majesty was indeed said to be 5'3" to 5'4" tall in her youthful prime but lost a great deal of height in later years. The King, who I have also met, is no more than 5 foot 9" tall and if you see photos of him standing with Queen Camilla she is no taller than his eyebrows. Until Diana joined the royal family all the royal ladies were shorter than average, and I believe Queen Mary, who always looks so imperious, was in reality quite tiny. It has been interesting to see how well her various tiaras and jewellery suit Queen Camilla, and that may have influenced her choice of crown. The crown is also having 4 of the arches removed too to give it a different aesthetic. I agree with you on the placement of the cullinan diamonds. Loving the series!

I hadn't spotted that in my reading - most interesting. Queen Mary had the arches designed to be easily removable and they can be put back again afterwards when the crown returns to the jewel house. The joy of doing these videos is that I learn something too, thank you!

I like the idea that historic crowns are used instead of having new ones made for coronations. The existing crowns convey a sense of history and continuity in the coronation. Queen Mary's crown is definitely a beauty.

An excellent, succinct history of this crown Allan. I really enjoy your clear explanations of all the regalia associated with coronations past and present. This is an elegant crown and a good choice as it fulfils a wish that Queen Mary had when she commissioned and paid for this crown so long ago. Even if it is modified, its simplicity is its strength. Thanks again.

Thank you Alan....its genius, its presses all the right buttons. But.....if the Palace is reading this, leave the 8 half arches and do not reduce down to 4. The shape is beautiful and with the simple open setting it needs the 8 arches. As for what should replace the rock crystal replica, why not a subtle coloured stone such as an aquamarine. The crown doesn't have to be all diamonds. Let us look at our late Queens George IV diadem seen as she travelled to open Parliment. The front stone in the main cross is wonderful pale yellow diamond. Also a coloured stone makes it much easier to tell which is the front, saving the embarrassment of putting it on back to front during the service. I shall be fascinated to hear both Alan's and everyone else's thoughts on my idea. Even more intriguing would be a comment from The Palace.

Part of me likes this and part of my still doesn't get it... If they don't alter it, it would still show that controversial diamond's setting... That being said this crown has the same design/ arches as the imperial crown of India and really is from a time of empire, that in itself seems controversial. I know the arches are removable but if they are it will change the look and be a little too small looking imo. I hope they add the small diamond in the monde cross and somehow have the large pear set en Tremblant or dangling in the cross.

And she had no other choice but to get a crown of her own! According to this info on this video! And it's wonderful that the new Queen Camilla, will wear it at the upcoming coronation 👑! "Queen Consort" is NOT a title, it's a rank. No one ever referred to the Queen Mother; Queen Mary; Queen Alexandra; Queen Adelaide; the Charlottes or even Mary of Modena as "Queen Consort". The very instant Queen Elizabeth died, Camilla became Queen. I'm sick and tired of people trying to devalue Queen Camilla, she is a nice lady and the perfect partner for our new King. As to the Koh-in-Noor diamond, tell Modi to concentrate on his own people and trying to bring India into the modern world without cruelty and racism.

I believe Alexandra’s crown had 8 half arches as this was the continental style. For Alexandra being a Danish Princess this was suitable , Mary was also a European princess so 8 half arches were appropriate. Queen Elizabeth had 4 arches as she was British, so I assume the change is being made as camilla is British.

@allanbarton
@allanbarton Год назад
The fleur-de-lys is not a French symbol per se, but a symbol of the purity Virgin Mary - it was part of our medieval and Tudor crowns for that reason and has simply continued. The French adopted it too because of its association with Mary.

Also worth noting that the English and later British Monarchs technically claimed the French Throne from 1340-1800 (originating from a territorial claim by Edward III, ending with the Acts of Union between Great Britain and Ireland, by which point France was a Republic anyway).

Thinking about the possible future - I wonder it Camilla will outlive Charles. What will be done during Will´s and Kate´s coronation? Will Camilla then attend that coronation wearing this crown or what. If Charles outlives Camilla, I expect Kate to choose between those 3 crowns. Well that is a decision that will be made when the time comes, influenced by what happens between now and then.
