Enjoy the charm of riding a genuine antique wooden horse on this classic and timeless ride. Kings Island’s magnificent carousel was manufactured by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, Philadelphia, Pa., in 1926 and is the oldest ride in the park. It is one of approximately 90 carousels built by the company from 1904 to 1934. It was officially labelled #79, and is among the 11 rides that remain that opened with Kings Island in 1972. During the 1937 flood in Cincinnati, some of the horses were swept away, but rewards were offered for them, and parts were returned from as far away as Memphis, TN. The 48 hand-carved horses have been restored several times since then. The carousel’s band organ was built by Wurlitzer in 1918. It was purchased by Kings Island in 1972 for the park’s new and valuable old carousel.

I like this carousel over Cedar Points. The sound system really slaps more

Because the music is played by a real mechanical band organ. No speakers or anything electric or circuit board stuff in it at all. The only thing electric is the motor which drives the main pulleywheel which drives every single part in the organ. The rolls and the pressure system and all as it is pneumatic and plays from paper player piano-like rolls. Cedar Point's Daniel Muller carousel does have a working Wurlitzer 153 band organ left unused for many years, repaired for the 150th anniversary there. It is a very good sounding organ in my opinion as is the Kings Island organ, a much, much more rare Wurlitzer 157. At least 100 153's exist but only 7 Wurlitzer 157's do. The 153 is the largest of the small band organs. All large sized band organs from Wurlitzer are rare, and only 30 or so exist.

Actually the Wurlitzer 157 band organ was originally sold around 1927 I think. It is the former Paul Eakins organ. Serial number is said to be 3833 by several people.

It is the Eakins 157, also known as The Queen Of Kings Island. But they did a bogus job, since the organ sounds way out of tune on Midi!
@CBF1
@CBF1 2 года назад
@@DavidBurgessMechanicalMusic I'm not actually sure if it has Midi in it. Hershey Park's 153 and Glen Echo Park's 165 do not have Midi. It wouldn't make a difference how it sounded whether it played via Midi or Rolls. Midi solenoids just open the valves that the rolls are connected to so you'd get the same sound. What are out of tune on this organ are the tubas, but everything else sounds excellent as is the facade restoration. It was in terrible shape before with rather dry rotten-looking paint.

The Queen of Kings Island is featured on the CD, Come to the Fair.

@@CBF1 i am a former ride op at kings island on the carousel and i can confirm that the organ does infact have a midi reader as of the 2022 upgrades , the only way the new system would sound any different is if they replaced some of the pipes during the refurbishments, but other than that its the same original pipes just with a new way to play the music! think an electric guitar.
@CBF1
@CBF1 Год назад
@@MrVekoma1979 True. MIDI is really harmless, doesn't change anything other than the way an organ operates. No idea if I'd Midify a band organ if I have one.

Is the 157 meant to sound like this?

@khmam I don't think so! It sounds like a Gavioli now!

They're having a pretty tame ride on that galloper. Less than 3 r.p.m at full speed (24 seconds per revolution) would have people complaining loudly on this side of the Pond. Most European antique rides do 5 or 6 r.p.m. (10 to 12 seconds per revolution) and some modern ones are even faster.

Nonetheless, thanks for the video! The organ restoration has brought out the best in the instrument. 🙂👍

You forgot to mention that Wurlitzer 157 was owned by Paul Eakins originally.

@DavidBurgessMechanicalMusic
@DavidBurgessMechanicalMusic 2 года назад
@@andrewlardieri4110 Yeah! And that's not restoration, that's called refurbishment, since it's no longer playing Wurlitzer 165 Rolls like a 157 usually should!
@andrewlardieri4110
@andrewlardieri4110 2 года назад
@@DavidBurgessMechanicalMusic Actually, if you come to think of it, the style 157 is in a way a transposing instrument tune 5 half steps higher than its larger successor the Wurlitzer 165 which is tune to play in concert pitch.

Does King Island still play this organ every day and all day when the park is open? Are they just playing the organ for this video to look good, and actually play sound recordings of band organ instead when they are actually open? I ASK THIS BECAUSE I WENT TO CEDAR POINT PARK IN 2008 ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THEY DON'T PLAY THE BAND ORGANS ON THE CAROUSELS ANY LONGER; THEY JUST PLAY CAROUSEL MUSIC OVER A SOUND SYSTEM. THIS WAS A BITTER DISSAPOINTMENT AND A SLAP IN THE FACE AS A CAROUSEL ENTHUSIAST. CEDAR FAIR PARKS MUST HAVE A PROCEDURE OR POLICY TO PLAY ONLY PRE RECORDED MUSIC ON THEIR CAROUSELS. IF KINGS ISLAND HONESTLY PLAYS THIS WurliTzer 157 band organ daily when the carousel operates, I will consider visiting this park. By the way, is this organ still using paper rolls or a MIDI SYSTEM?

Cedar Point and Kings Island are both using live band organs, not recordings.
