When Queen appeared, I had not yet been born, but since an incredibly young age I just love the music of this fabulous band. More than fabulous, Queen are true legends. Every member of the band has such talent, exceptional musicians, and then the voice of Freddie Mercury, that voice that makes us melt, that brings to life every word fantastically brought out of John Deacon's talent, the Queen's hidden diamond. Freddie Mercury's voice that makes us feel every vibration, makes our hearts beat so fast, that makes us feel part of those words, that sings as if it were doing it for us...and he is. Yes, even though I was incredibly young when Freddie died, my love for that voice, that unique music and way of singing is going to last forever... You know, stars do not die, they only and forever shine brighter and brighter... I absolutely love Queen, and I absolutely love Freddie... Cool reaction! This is the only Queen song with a saxophone solo, they got a studio musician to do the saxophone parts. The music from the Highlander is excellent, definitely better then the movie. Yes, the expression in Freddie's voice does stand out here. Freddie really has some of the best expression in his voice. I think people instinctively gravitate towards that expression, even if they don't understand why they might enjoy Freddie's voice so much. You have to listen to quite a few Queen songs, to really understand the colour, nuances and different timbres he could add to his voice in order to express the message of the song. Of course you have basically become an honorary Queen reactor, so you can now pick up that expression. This is what Montserrat Caballe said about Freddie's voice: "He was able to glide effortlessly from one register to another. The difference between Freddie and almost all other rockstars was that he was selling the voice. His phrasing was subtle delicate and sweet, or energetic and slamming. He was able to find the right colouring, or expressive nuance for every word." The first job of a singer is always to convey the message of the song. Music is a form of art, with a message to express, if you are not expressing the message within the music then you are not doing your job successfully as a vocalist. People these days can sometimes get caught up in technique or hitting a lot of high notes, but a good singer and musician will always think about how their choices are serving the song or the music. You can compare it to an instrumentalist as well, they have to play to serve the song they can't just add a bunch of solos to show off their skills. Of course you can show off your skills, but it should fit the music. You have discussed how Brian uses his guitar as voice, but perhaps the opposite is also true on some songs. Freddie uses his voice a bit like a guitar amp at times. In order to create the distortion, vibrato and those screaming pitches on the guitar, that really tucks at your heartstrings, you have to overdrive the guitar amp. Freddie does something similar, he overdrives his voice and vibrato to create that piecing pitch that sings in your soul. Freddie also had great timing and he knew exactly when to add which effect to his voice, therefore you always believe every word Freddie was singing, even when he was singing material from the other band members. Expression and emotion is not something you can teach a singer, this comes from a singer's own artistry. Now that you are more attuned to the expression within Freddie's voice you should listen to songs such as The Millionaire Waltz, Bring Back That Leroy That Leroy Brown and Seaside Rendezvous once again, those songs have great expression.

I still remember the first time I heard this song when the record came out! Freddie's voice gets me every time! I love how close Freddie and John were musically. Freddie really encouraged John. I think John looked up to Freddie (as Freddie was the oldest and John the youngest) as a replacement for his passed father or as an older brother. Another great, great love song John wrote for his wife Veronica is You're My Best Friend. I really love the video. I usually prefer live Queen over any of their videos, but there are a few exceptions, including You're My Best Friend, We Will Rock You, and Spread You're Wings, which you just reacted to. Sweet self effacing John had such a passionate heart and with Freddie singing those lyrics with such a depth of feeling, I get goosebumps.

Freddie Mercury's voice is all-encompassing. It takes you to another world. Your reaction is spot on. This is such a beautiful song. I love that they used Steve Gregory, a studio musician to do a Sax solo. John talked it over with Brian and they agreed to the sax solo instead of guitar but i'm not sure how Brian really felt about that. He probably wasn't too happy. John Deacon also played a synth and had a string quartet. It sounds like John had a very specific plan in mind when he wrote this masterpiece. He really bared his soul with these lyrics, and sometimes Freddie helped John with his lyrics. I'm not sure if Freddie helped or not but Freddie always longed for love and it sounds like he may have had some input. Never the less, His voice just brought those words alive and not only can you feel what the movie character must have felt over his long life, but you could feel every word in your own soul. This could have been released today and be a huge hit. Thanks for doing this song.

You can tell how much love John (Deaky) had for his wife, just by the words, not saying he was a angel when on the road, but his heart was all his wife's, pray that he has found peace, love and happy ness now for the rest of his life

When Queen was 1st approached to score the movie, they said "No" but then they had the opportunity to watch around 20 minutes of the rough cut and it got them all excited. Something about what they saw inspired their creativity. They separated, so each could come up with there own songs based on what stimulated their own personal imagination. Then they came back together, so they could sort out (fight over) which songs to include in the movie. As you know, what Queen released on their album (or as a single) is not a soundtrack of the movie. They reworked all of the songs, sometimes even changing the baseline to make them Queen songs. The album version of this song features John playing the Yamaha DX-7 synth and a string orchestra conducted by Lynton Naiff. The saxophone is played by Steve Gregory, a session musician who had previously performed on Wham!’s 1984 number one hit, “Careless Whisper”.

Freddie was always so smart with his voice - he seemed to instinctively know when to push it (in a good way) and infuse it with emotion and a rock quality. I feel this one all the way down to my toes. Another excellent song written by John Deacon. The Highlander songs gave us a chance to hear Queen with an orchestra. I especially love the alto saxophone played by Steve Gregory in this one -had to look that up on genius lyric site because it sounded so good! I want to give the man credit.

Oh, I'm so glad you reacted to this song! I just told you about it on your last Queen reaction because it's one of my favourites. Freddie's voice is amazing here, it makes you feel the emotion of every word. A couple of things: they didn't read the script, they saw some scenes from the film. And you're right, basically they agreed that each of them would write at least one song for the film. Also, this song was part of the ongoing "musical war" between Brian and John, since the guitar solo is actually a saxophone solo and you can believe Brian wasn't too happy about that. Many of the songs written by John had a lot of help from Freddie, especially when it comes to lyrics. I have my own theories about Freddie and Deaky, but let's just say that Freddie probably helped him to write this one.

I know they were shown rushes of the movie to get an idea of what the film was about and to give them inspiration. The song "One vision" which is also on the album was done for an earlier movie "Iron Eagle" so I guess it just fitted.
