Fairy feller's master's stroke was a painting Freddie loved, each character in the song is in that painting. The first album was great too. Great reaction.

Richard Dadd (1817-1886) was the artist. He was a paranoid schizophrenic and composed "The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke" over a ten-year period while institutionalized. It's considered by most to be his masterpiece.

Great review, it is great that you guys know which member is singing each song before the song starts. The first Queen album is amazing as well, and the 3rd Queen album as well. Basically all of Queen's 70's albums are top tier. Queen learned early on, it was very difficult for them to get radio play for their heavier songs, but they basically always made heavier songs well. Even in those days radio sometimes had a formula, that is why the best Queen songs are not necessarily always the hits. The first two Queen albums tends to be very popular with musicians, many metal bands would list this album and early Queen albums as an inspiration. Queen II was done on an 18 track machine. That is part of the difficulties within the production, when you have to record so many overdubs. Some of these songs are even better live, Queen were an amazing live band, they have often been voted as the best live band. Two songs from this album where the live versions are better is Father To Son - Queen live at the Rainbow 1974 and White Queen - Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975. Brian May and Roger Taylor had lead vocals on all of their 70's albums, by the 80's they just decided that Freddie should sing everything. Roger Taylor has an amazing voice, he could easily have been the lead singer in many bands, but he was in a band with Freddie Mercury. Roger was the main back up singer in the band. There is a lot to unpack in this album, this is somewhat of a concept album, the first side was the white side and second side was the black side. Brian May was very close to his father especially as an only child. During this time he and his father was really not getting along, because Brain May had left his Phd studies in Astrophysics behind in order to concentrate on Queen. Of course Brian's father was very unhappy about his son abandoning his Phd in order to play guitar in a rock band. Brian and his father did build his guitar together from scraps they had around the house. They were both supper intelligent, thus they designed a guitar with features that were unavailable at the time. When you look at a song such Father To Son, you can understand how Brian May might have written the song during that time. Brian and his father did eventually work through their problems. White Queen was written by Brian May about a girl that he really liked at university. The song is about being in love from afar. It is a very beautiful song, and the live version is truly amazing. Roger Taylor wrote a lot of more simplistic blues rock numbers in the 70's. Queen is the only band where each member has written a number one song. Queen did not use any synths in the 70's, most of the synth like sounds is actually Brian May with his guitar. He had an amp, build by bass player John Deacon that mimics orchestral sounds. Something interesting to understand about Freddie at this time is that he basically created a whole fantasy world through a few different songs, starting from the first album. Some people claim that he was writing a fantasy novel at the time. Songs such as Ogre Battle, The March Of The Black Queen and The Seven Seas Of Rhye fits into this fantasy world. Freddie's songs in this time often featured direct quotes from the characters within the song. The March Of The Black Queen starts with a battle at sea against a pirate Queen. The battle is lost and she tortures the soldiers from the other ship. Then she seduces the narrator and he falls for her charms and swears fealty to her and leave his old live behind. The Fairy Fellers Master-stroke is about a painting from Richard Dadd, he was in an asylum after he had killed his father, and it took him a few years to finish the painting. Freddie Mercury had a degree in art, so he was always interested in art. The song described the paining exactly. The song even features a polka. Freddie Mercury was a complex person, he wasn't just living with a women for appearances. The women, Mary Austin, was the love of his life, he even left the biggest part of his estate to her. On the first Queen album there is a song called My Fairy King, where a fantasy kingdom is invaded and destroyed, The Seven Seas Of Rhye is from the opposite perspective. The perspective of the invaders. Freddie created the story of Rhye alongside his siter, when they were children. The idea of the song also shows someone who is dreaming of adventures at sea, which is why it ends with "I do like to live beside the seaside". That is an English classic. Freddie was born on the island of Zanzibar. It is a good that you have noticed Freddie's piano playing as well, he is always just known for his singing and his stage presence but he was actually quite a good pianist as well. He actually started singing very late at the age of 23, in his first band he was just the piano player. Basically the only Queen album that many people often don't like is Hot Space, and the dislike comes more from the style of music. All of Queen's albums were generally good.
@simonk7937
@simonk7937 Год назад
Yes it's their best album IMO , White Queen live is definitely worth a watch and reaction too .. Ogre Battle is just Queen playing speed metal which they're entitled too as they pretty much created it , Stone Cold Crazy live knocks the Metallica version out the park and is pretty much regarded as the birth song of speed metal . Great reaction guys 🤘

"The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" is a painting by Richard Dadd. (1817 -1886) The song by Queen is without a verse/chorus structure; the lyrics are actually a description of the content of the painting! The life of Dadd is fascinating, but would take too long to describe here.

Queen II is my favorite Queen Album, it has a very unique mixture of Heavy Metal and Prog-Rock and already a very particular sound. The harmonies are so great and over the top, this was a band reaching for the stars without being famous. Loved your reaction to this very often unknown side of Queen, which I would argue is who they really are. No wonder it is the hardcore fans favorite.

Also, regarding the comment about Roger not having the 'Freddie Mercury range'. Roger has a higher voice than Freddie, so all the high notes you ever hear in Queen song, including Bohemian Rhapsody, is Roger. Freddie always joked about being jealous of Roger's range.

Brian is using the amp John Deacon made called Deacy’s amp on his Red Special guitar-that guitar he and his dad made from a table, fireplace mantle and parts in his garage. He said that guitar along with the amp John made allows him to make unique sounds. It’s called the red special. I love March of the Black Queen. The more you hear it the more you hear the brilliance of their collaborations. ❤😢RIP Freddie.

That outro song is an old song that everyone who grew up in England knows. So, in my opinion, Queen were a prog band at this point. All the songs on side 2 run into each other, and Sheer Heart Attack, the next album, continues from where this left off. While I've always loved Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack takes it up like 10 notches. The first album is also great, though. You might wanna give it a listen. They had been playing and touring and writing for years before they recorded it, so they were way already more experienced and mature than a first album might lead you to believe. That said, I wanna get my vote/suggestion in again for Sheer Heart Attack. You'll love it.

Recently???? Where???? They were classic/bangers in my country (Spain) already when I was born (and most of the people from my parent´s generation didn´t learn English, but French at school, like with Bowie, it didn´t matter). They were already a worldwide phenomenon at the 70s and 80s. During the late 70s and early 80s they did tours in stadiums, beat records of audience in some audience (5 shows in Argentina, 300,000 people went to the one in Buenos Aires), 2 at São Paulo (131,000 people). Usually broadcasted to TV too. They had play/tour at Canada, Mexico, Japan, Montreal (recorded live), etc. Every year Bohemian Rapsody is voted "the UK's favourite hit of all time" since decades. They are one of the most bootlegged bands ever. People travel to Montreux to pay their respects to a statue in Mercury memory. And the Live Aid concert in 1985 (their performance, specifically) has been a myth since I can remember (and I was 5!).

The first rock and roll album I ever bought was Sheer Heart Attack. I was 13 in 1977 and it was a couple of years old. Then I bought A day at the races and Night at the Opera. Those albums had all the big international hits to that point. Then I was at the grocery store with my mom and found Queen and Queen 2 in the record section. I thought I had found antiques. At thirteen in 1977 it seemed that albums from 73 were really old. I had heard WMMS in Cleveland play Keep yourself Alive but that was all the radio play that came off the first two albums. And that was only after Killer Queen put them on the international charts. Their music wasn't known in the USA till their Sheer Heart Attack album in 74/75. They paid their dues.

Mention of the great 'bass line' a couple times . . . love it. John Deacon the lovely, lovely 'Deaky' one of the truly 4 legendary Queen musicians - he said no more Queen without Freddie and retired from music in 1997 after helping perform in a staged production tribute to Freddie Mercury's love of Ballet. So thrilled finding this, your viewing and discussion.♥

Pleases me enormously when someone else discovers an album ive loved forever,Brian's "red special"guitar was built jointly by his father and himself from household items[part of a wooden mantlepiece for the body,a spring from a bicycle shopping bag and knitting needles]his unique tone(ive read) owes a lot to the fact that 1,his pick-ups were wired in series not paralell as was most common which makes them run"hot" and 2, that the switch gear for the pick-ups can switch each one out of phase which can drive them even more,also the "i do like to be beside the seaside"snippet at the end of the album is reprised on the opening track of their next album"sheer heart attack","Brighton rock"where in amongst funfair sounds can be heard a fella whistling "i do like to be beside the seaside",the painting "the fairy fellers master stroke"was painted by Richard Dadd,all the characters mentioned in the song are in the painting,a lot of the names are unfamilliar as they were from the victorian era

It's definitely part of why the production was as poor as it was on _Queen_ and _Queen II_ , but considering the low budget and their grand ideas, they killed it. Just as you guys said, you can hear their immature sounds and their grandiose dreams for the future. So many interviews of the guys over the years have shown how difficult working together was and how they did not see each other on breaks, but they _knew_ how great they were together and refused to break up the magic. Thank goodness for all of us!

My favourite group ever. Thank you for this reaction. They had since the very begining (even in recording performances is evident) an incredible charisma on stage. Amazing composers, lyricists, doing arrangements, vocalists, with the instruments... Queen are, for me, the Kings, as they sang, the champions. Sooo many incredible songs unnoticed (or almost) that would be "the song" for almost any other group. It took UK, and USA even more, a while to urderstand that (in the time of the punk explosion) that weird group was truly amazing (while they were not earning almost a penny for a while due to bad contract deals, despite selling tons and tons of records). But they reached success quite early in the rest of Europe, Japan, South America... They are such an unique group with soooo many good songs... (Not my favourite album, though. Still, amazing). And yes, they had a lot of production problems (like overdubbing) and also had to delay the launch (due to restrictions due to the oil crisis of 1973 that impacted records/things with plastic). First producer was fired, recording studio/date issues (some of them were on College/University exams at the same time, like John Deacon , Brian was really ill (gangrene) and couldn´t go to the studio at the finishing stages, etc. Quite messy.

(Also: they weren´t earning almost a decent amount to live, rent or buy a house at that stage, despite of selling, due to the bad deal signed with Trident. It´s one of the reasons they left them)

"Funny How Love Is" has the Phil Spector Wall-of-Sound" effect. If you want to hear more of Freddie with that sound, check out Larry Lurex. That was a one off, with Freddie as the the lead vocals, with Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. Trident Studios (Queen's management group at the time, as well as a recording studio), in 1972, was experimenting with the "wall-of-sound", so they recruited Freddie to record the vocals, with Brian and Roger as paid studio musicians, to record a 7" single. The "A" side was "I Can Hear Music" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KxyjGL8xJAU.html) and the B side was "Goin' Back" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3epki8NAbWg.html)

The cover art was taken by mik rock for the Bo Rhap video. I remember seeing it when it was released and was blown away. The Idea for the Photo was taken from a photo of marlena deitrich.

My first concert was Queen at Hyde Park, London 18th September 1976, which was a free concert. Ogre Battle was on the set-list. Probably their heaviest song along with White Man from A Day at the Races.

Mach of the Black Queen ... often referred to as Bohemian Rhapsody's older big sister! I was lucky enough to have seen them live 6 times with the great front man.

As you probably know, Brian May had a very close relationship with his father, thus the song "Father to Son" makes sense when put in that perspective,

My second favourite Queen album (after Sheer Heart Attack). I've always wondered if the album would hold better without "Loser in the End". In a way it doesn't fit in with the other tracks or is it like the middle section of the Beatles "A Day in the Life" where its a slice of real life in amongst the fantasy.

if you look at the Queen coat of arms, there is a crab (cancer sign for Roger/John) Brian and Freddie (dragon and the fairies) Fred drew and designed it.

2:31 -- On the _early_ Queen albums, it was a rule that Roger had to sing his own songs _(normally one per album)_ and that Brian had to sing at least one of his songs.

And "Seven Seas of Rhye" was featured in the Biopic _Bohemian Rhapsody_ . Many people know it now from that movie. (It showed them making it in the studio.)

...of his LADY friend ... It's about a painting 😉 Roy Thomas Baker is the producer of the first five Queen albums , he is partly responsible for the Queen sound . I would suggest "Sheer Heart Attack" next

I see they've gotten rid of that original word in the song, they've replaced it with 'sugar.' Shouldn't be allowed to tamper with original art, no matter what the word is.

old school Queen fans look on march of the black Queen as bo rhaps big sister, it seems to be a little taster of what was to come, so many tempo and key changes, their transitions were seamless and at this point they were all young men on their SECOND album, how many bands have the talent to create work of this quality? and people say Queen are over-rated 👑✊🇬🇧

Where "Black Queen" is the older sister to "Bohemian Rhapsody," "The Prophet's Song" is the third in the trilogy. All three are exquisite.

the fairy fellers masterstroke was about a painting that freddie owned by the same name from a british artist called richard dad, if you google the painting then the lyrics of the song will make sense to you instead of sneering at it! 👑✊🇬🇧
