Great reaction but hate to make you guys jealous but I was in THAT crowd. I first saw Queen at Live Aid in 1985 when I was 16 years old and was hooked. We didn't know whether they were going to make an appearance as they weren't on the official line up (another beautiful tactic of Freddie's no doubt). Plus he said if they played they went on straight after the 6 oclock (UK news on TV) when they knew everyone would be tuned in so they went on at 6.41pm........ a true craft master. For 20 minutes or so on the 13 July 1985 the UK were ruled by a different Queen. I saw them twice the following year in July 1986 (this performance) and then his last ever LIVE show with Queen in Knebworth in August 1986 when there were about 150,000 of us in the crowd. I have been a Queen fan ever since and dear Freddie is my absolute hero. Tried bidding for one of his trainers worn at these concerts in Sotherbys yesterday but missed out, in the end they all went (3 or 4 pairs I think) for about £80,000.00. His Superman t-shirt worn in Montreal 1981 went for nearly £100,000.00. RIP my dear persian poppinjay you were and always will be a legend. RIP Freddie Mercury darling. 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛

Freddie did do high notes sometimes on tour, but Queen did 4&5 month tours and Freddie needed to protect his voice for the tour, cancellations would be something Freddie did not want to chance. Great reaction

Great reaction! Queen's live performances were generally known to be better than the studio versions, with few exceptions. They improvised and tweaked the songs, so that they were never the same twice, because Freddie said he didn't want the fans to become bored with them. You never knew what to expect. This is 1986, when Freddie was beginning to suspect that there might be something wrong with him, and the main reason for that was the fact that he was losing the highest notes in his range, even when he wasn't tired. Roger (drums) covered for him masterfully. As we now know, Freddie didn't go for the test, and receive his diagnosis, until 1987.

Stunning live performance. I wish I had that jacket. Actually, Roger is singing Freddie's part and Freddie is singing David's part. Roger is singing the high notes but his mic is just not loud enough in this mix. Queen was one of the best shows I ever went to because they really did engage the crowd. A lot, well most bands didn't get that active. Part of the issue was that guitars and mics had cords and it was hard to get around without tripping over them. Mick Jagger was always very active on the stage but he doesn't connect with the audience in the way that Freddie did, nobody else could do it which is why Freddie has been called the greatest Frontman of all time. Thank you for your reactions.

Nobody interacted with the crowd like Freddie Mercury. He started the call and response. Yes Freddie was able to sing high notes again once he quit smoking and for the opera album he co-wrote and sang with Monserrat Cabballe. Check out Exercises In Free Love and you will hear a song he wrote where he sings Monserrat’s soprano and his baritone parts. Incredible!

Absolutely phenomenal performance from in my opinion the greatest band ever and Freddie the greatest frontman of a band, I actually attended this concert at Wembley Stadium in 1986 part of their Magic Tour, I also attended Knebworth Park UK which was Freddie’s very last live performance at a concert, the crowd at Knebworth Park was estimated between 120 -40 thousand people, backup bands were Statius Quo and Big Country, fond memories of them times, great reaction thanks 🙏

Yes, he did sing the high notes live sometimes an example is Under Pressure live in Stuttgart 1984, he did the A5 live a lot during 1984 and 1985, but there is no video of it only bootlegs. Of course practically every Queen songs has a lot of high notes, and Freddie sings different every time, so you have to make choices for 20 plus songs a night. Even at this 1986 concert there is Impromptu section where Freddie sings the extra high notes. He also had the flu during this concert.

If you want to see interaction with the audience you should watch "Love of my life" at Rock in Rio, the audience literally singing to Queen, it was legendary and unforgettable. Hugs from Brazil. Obs: About the high notes, Freddie really avoided them on tour because he refused to cancel shows, but I found some records of his high voice also in Rock in Rio when Freddie improvises a song in homage to Brazil, it sounded incredibly beautiful, the other record was in a performance by Under Pressure in Montreal

Freddie's voice is unmatched, nowadays singers use commonly an auto tune during the concerts. Did you know that even scientific study confirms Freddie Mercury had an unparalleled singing voice. That what makes his voice so special was extremely fast vibrato 7.04 Hz and subharmonics. He was able to create several more layers of harmonics than anyone else. Freddie was using a subharmonics by vibrating his ventricular folds, a technique usually found only in Tuvan throat singers. One of the conclusions from the studies was that "Mercury was vibrating something in his throat that even Pavarotti couldn't move and that kind of creates a very typical vocal fingerprint" check out Queen Fat bottomed girls live at Bowl 82 White queen live at the Odeon 75 Freddie's solo Barcelona and Exercises in free love- his voice will blow your mind

Queen does not do their songs live like they do on the record. Their feeling is that if you want to hear that, you can just listen to the record. They made the songs similar but they switched them up, often making them into a medley. Freddie was really the only one doing these kinds of interactions with the crowd. He is unmatched then and now. As for the high notes, they did 90-120 min plus concerts so Freddie really had to pace himself. Roger helped out with the high notes when Freddie couldn't. It sounds to me like you guys really need to watch more live Queen performances. They are IMHO the best live band ever. Check out their performance of White Queen live at Hammersmith 1975 and You Take My Breath Away at Hyde Park for songs that are not as well known as the hits. FYI---Under Pressure and Radio Gaga are very well known and both were hits. No, he never performed live with Bowie. Great reaction, guys, thanks. I hope you will do more Queen live. There is a lot of live Queen performances and even entire concerts on youtube. The most memorable are Live Aid 1985, Wembley 1986 Saturday, Montreal 1981, The Rainbow 1974, and Hammersmith Odeon 1975 but there are plenty of others as well. When the four get together and play live, something magical happens. The energy from Freddie is unmatched. Even if you don't want to react to entire concerts, they are definitely worth watching on your own. You won't find anything better.

Thanks, guys - Queen were amazing live.. it's not that he "can't do the high notes" -- the original of this song was a duet with David Bowie... Freddie did have difficulty with some of the high notes live... but in this case, Roger is doing Bowie's part...

Just want to add about the high notes. Yes, he did them live, BUT, depends on the song and take on the song. He though that falsetto didnt go as good with live rock sound, so he change them to their equivalent head note. And, depending on the song, and the live take on the song (like how they make Somebody to Love for live performance) he change that head note, for its chest equivalent. And becouse Freddie had GREAT harmonics, that bring A LOT to the song. A very nice song to "compare" those note, from that conert, is In The Lap Of The Gods. The song, as is in the album, is high head notes and falsetto. Live, in that concert, Mercury did a mixture from Falsetto to high chest note, and you can see the incredible diference. In other parts, like the Improntu, you can see how he plays with Falsetto, Head Notes, Chest Notes, Low and High.

Yes, he has performed high notes in this song. Just remember that Freddie usually wrote where they can change it up. He does it on purpose. Also, Bowie and mercury never did perform it together. I learn mostly from his interviews. If Freddie says it I believe it.

Freddie had been under Dr's orders to rest his voice prior to live aid. That continued through into the 1986 tour. The HIV was apparently causing problems with his voice and some of the songs had to be dropped in pitch slightly to help Freddie be able to continue to perform. Brian May and Roger Taylor have both confirmed that in separate interviews. They've also said that towards the end Freddie was finding it harder and harder to get into the studio so some of the stuff on Made In Heaven was actually recorded on tape in his home. That's why Made In Heaven was sometimes a little away from the usual recording standards that Queen worked to and some tracks the vocal almost sounds like a bad MP3. The title track was actually recorded back in 1987 for The Cross album Shove It. The Cross were a group Roger put together during down time from Queen. The UK version has Freddie singing Made In Heaven whilst the US version is sung by Roger.

I don't think Queen and David had a fight. They always talked with appreciation about each other. David sang this song at Freddie's tribute show. The fun story about it is that John Deacon came up with the bass line, they all went for a pizza and he forgot it. But Roger remembered it. They never did it live together but I think it's just because they were too busy. You should listen to some opera stuff Freddie recorded in his last years. It really shows a different colour to his voice. He could do it all.

Actually I've discovered Mr.. Bowie never gave "Under Pressure" public attention until he did so at the 1992 Tribute to Freddie Mercury. There's oodles all over the internet to reference why that may have happened. Thus I give tremendous applause for Freddie Mercury's good and honest perseverance that gave them and us this lovely tract.

The first time I saw a live performance from them on RU-vid it was Somebody to Love and it threw me that he didn't do the high note of the end. It kinda bugged me at first because I was so used to the studio version...but as I watched their live performances I realized that it's really 2 different songs: studio vs live. Somebody to love and Under Pressure have the most noticeable differences imo. Basically you're trading the high notes and crazy vocal layering for a much more authentic and powerful voice filled with emotion along with his genius improvisational skills. And Roger Taylor does a great job filling in some of the higher stuff. Truthfully, after getting used to them, I prefer the live versions of both. You don't hear that power from Freddie in the Studio versions singing those high notes and something about him belting those power notes just gives me goosebumps every time. There's just something more raw and authentic about it.

The interactive part of Queen’s show was developed because the Audience was singing their songs with them. People didn’t do that ever, so Brian wrote We Will Rock You to give the audience a chance to feel part of the band. The rest is history and things changed in concerts everywhere. I don’t know if the reason Brian wrote that or not but it sounds good. Lol. (From the movie). A lot was wrong maybe this is also. The best part of Queens shows must have been joking in.

David and Queen collaborated at a weird time when there were tensions amongst the band and that also translated into a tense studio session, I dont think there was any particular bad blood between all of them and David per say, Freddie actually knew David since '68 or '69 (before they were both famous) as long as he had known Brian and Roger, they met when Freddie helped David put together two tables to make a makeshift stage

Wembley and Budapest are my two favourite concerts, and while I do love Montreal it was a tad spoiled for me by the fact that the audience was so restrained by the video's directors, enough to anger Freddie so much that he did his best to spoil the continuity on the second night.
