The stadium was sold out which is said to have been 72,000 though I have heard from some of the concert officials that because people on the grass area were standing instead of sitting that there were 80,000. Each band was allowed 20 minutes to do their set. This was not a Queen crowd as all the tickets were sold before Queen was confirmed to be on the bill, however, it is a home town crowd for Queen as they were a British band from London. This is an iconic set for Queen and the concert was a charity event for aid for the famine in Ethiopia. Set list: Bohemian Rhapsody (Mercury), Radio Ga-Ga (Taylor), Aay-Oh (call and response), Hammer To Fall (May), Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Mercury)(Freddie's tribute to Elvis that he wrote after Elvis had passed), We Will Rock You (May), We Are The Champions (Mercury). Brian wrote We Will Rock You and Freddie wrote We are The Champions. They wanted songs that the audience could participate with and this is what they created. Now everyone in the world has probably heard these two songs at some point.

Freddie had 70,000 people at wembly and 1.8 billion people around the world in the palm of his hand that day. I watched this Epic performance with my Dad I was 15 my Dad was 40. I was already a huge Queen fan but that day my Dad became a huge fan as well. Great memories. RIP dear Freddie you are missed and loved til this very day❤

We're thankful that you saw the whole concert and not the version that cuts Freddie off mid song in We Are The Champions. There is a live version of Hammer To Fall which was at Wembley Stadium, where this Live Aid concert is set, which took place on 11th July 1986. it IS BRILLIANT!
Freddie got on stage and took over that concert! There were several bands that performed at Live Aid but Queen stood out head and shoulders above the rest that night!

I have never forgotten the first sight of that crowd moving together as one. Over the days after the concert I played the tv recording of Radio Gaga over and over again! Magic! If you want to see him in a different light, watch a performance of “Barcelona” and, especially, “Days of our lives”! Very emotional. 😢

This is a small crowd compared to their Rock in Rio concert. Look up Love of my Life Rock in Rio and watch that one. That one also shows you how well Freddie controlled the crowds.

I love watching young people realize that they do , in fact, know Queen. Don’t forget “Another One Bites the Dust”.
Others have probably told ya but the 4th track is Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Freddie famously wrote it in about ten minutes while having a soak in the bath between recording sessions in Munich in 1979 😆 He wrote it as a tribute to Elvis Presley who had passed away a couple of years before. In fact this track was Queen’s first NUMBER ONE in America on the Billboard Hot 100 😊
I recently got to see Queen + Adam Lambert. It was CLEAR that Adam knew that he was not Freddie, but he is a fabulous vocalist, GREAT concert that paid homage to Freddie a few times throughout. I told a co-worker I got tickets and was excited: Her: I don't know who Queen is. Me: Yes you do, you just don't know that you know. Her: (look of confusion) Me: (I stomp, stomp clamped a few times.) Hammer to Fall was a song about Russia and the oppression of it's people. The hammer, or sickle, was a symbol of their regime. Hence, it's time for the hammer to fall.

Freddie had laryngitis the week before this concert, his doctor recommended that he cancel his appearance and rest his voice but he ignored the advice and went on to make rock history.

Live Aid was a duel-venue concert held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London (audience of 72,000) and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia (audience of 90,000) that was connected and broadcast over 13 satellites worldwide to an audience of over 1.9 Billion. The purpose of the concert was to raise money to aid Ethiopia which was suffering from 2-year drought. There were 75+ acts, each allotted a 20-minute slot to perform. The UK line-up included Status Quo,, David Bowie, Elton John, Wham!, Sting, U2, The Who, Paul McCartney, and Bob Geldof with his band The Boomtown Rats. The US bill included Madonna, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Petty. Phil Collins played in both London and then caught the Concord Supersonic Jet and flew to perform again in Philly. Live Aid did not have a Queen audience. All of the tickets to Wembley were sold before Queen was announced to be part of the venue. At this time, Queen was considered to be an old band (they had been performing since 1971.) Those in the audience came to see groups like U2 and Wham! Also, remember the Live Aid at Wembley concert began at 12:00 London time (the Philly concert began 5 hours later), so the audience had been there in the sun and heat for nearly 7 hours by the time Queen performed. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Freddie’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star. “Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. This was a charity/benefit concert, it was part of 2 SIMULTANEOUS concerts being held at Wembley Stadium, London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. It all started when a BBC NEWS report out of Ethiopia, Africa reported a CATASTROPHIC FAMINE sweeping the country, late summer/early fall of 1984. It was heartbreaking in the extreme. Among the millions of British viewers watching this was Irish singer-songwriter Bob Geldof who was a shocked and saddened as the rest of us. It prompted him to pick up the phone to his friend the singer-songwriter Midge Ure from the band Ultravox with the idea of recording a record to raise funds to send to Ethiopia. They figured if they could write an original song then there’d be no royalty fees to pay to third parties. So they hurriedly wrote the song Do They Know It’s Christmas bringing in as many of the top mainly British and European recording artists as they could get to record it calling the group Band Aid. They initially thought they might raise as much as £80-100K. They raised £8MILLION!! A few months later (around March ‘85) a slew of mainly American recording artists formed USA For Africa and recorded We Are The World. After the big success of these two records Bob G and Midge wondered how they could match or better what they’d already done and LIVE AID was the result. Two simultaneous concerts 1000’s of miles apart over 8-10 hours with an estimated tv viewing audience of 2 billion or more, it was a MASSIVE undertaking logistically and technically as satellite television was still in its infancy (and there was no internet yet). Each act was restricted to just a 21 minute set and it is universally accepted that Queen gave the best live performance from anyone anywhere anytime that day. In fact David Bowie was slotted to be next on stage after Queen and reportedly stated the obvious by saying “how the fuck do you follow that?!! It was also reported that Elton John told Freddie Mercury “you bastards stole the ducking show!!” 😊

To give people some idea of just how good Queen was that day, the legendary David Bowie who was on next after them was heard by a reporter to exclaim "how the fuck am I supposed to follow that?", also when Freddie Mercury was asked "which instrument do you play?", Freddie replied "the audience darling", there will never be another Freddie.

Freddie Mercury was the Real Deal. He wrote his own songs, he can sing, play the guitar, play the piano, crowd control at 1 million. All four members have attended universities: Mercury had a degree in graphic design and illustration; May has a degree in physics and has done graduate work in astronomy; Taylor has a degree in biology; Deacon earned a degree in electronics with first-class honors. Even dead Freddie STILL has not peaked. Freddie died back in 1991... 32 YEARS after he went to Eternity he is still watched. 78,000 people following Freddie's direction. Freddie was the Original Extrovert. When Freddie went to Eternity he left a hole in the fandom. "Under Pressure" from the Wembley concert is one of my favourites, partly for Freddie's famous call-back at the beginning. In fact, anything from Wembley would be great, including the three for the price of one video of "In The Lap Of The Gods"/"Seven Seas Of Rhye"/"Tear It Up". that will show you just how mad Freddie's piano playing was.
