I agree he was the secret sauce of Queen. I love the way he collaborated with Freddie. Of course he was really tight with Roger's drumming, but there is just something sublime in the songs with the piano, and of course Freddie's amazing singing he brought to John's songs. I remember Brian saying that he kept going till his throat bled for Another One Bites the Dust. He was so determined that John's vision was truly realised. And of course, he and Freddie went on that funk adventure together with Hot Space. Love you John and miss you. Hope you're doing well. Deacury forever!

Deaky was known to be a fan of Motown records and must have definitely taken a page or two off the book of tricks of that label’s favorite bassist, the late great James Jamerson, who was famous for going all sorts of places outside the conventional “root-fifth plod plod” school of bass playing.

Queen #1 always!! Thought John was a cutie pie back then, the quite type, & so not highlighted enough; even though her penned so many of their hit songs. Freddie adored John! So sad that we lost Freddie & John took it the hardest, as you probably know. Can totally understand why he retired. Love you John!!

I loved this video! John is so amazing and of course his brilliant passion for music is stamped all over the Queen legacy. And aren't we blessed for that?! I have to say, I'm very surprised that you skipped over Liar from Queen 1. It has one of the most epic bass solos ever. (IMHO as I'm pretty sure I am biased and that solo always gives me chills like none other 🤣) I would have loved to hear you play that. Regardless, great video! 😆👍

John seemed to play more melodic on piano driven songs. Freddie was a much better piano player than he thought he was and John’s bass and Freddie’s piano always worked so well together. When Brian wasn’t playing it never felt empty or like it needed guitar ie Don’t Stop Me Now. On guitar driven songs he seemed to play more traditionally. John knew when to play out and when not too. He could have been a session bass player easily.

In a way, Queen benefited from not having a rhythm guitarist as I think John Deacon had the freedom to fill some of that space, and he provided some of the strong melodic elements in many of the songs. This video is a good illustration of how important his bass playing was to fitting the songs together. Going off to find Part 2....I'm hoping that you included the later albums and included "Breakthrough", which although it's not one of the best known Queen songs, I think has a very strong bass line that really drives the whole song.
