This is a reupload of LOB Episode 9 - Part 3 of John Entwistle. This video was also screwed up by RU-vid's automated copyright audio removal. The Song "I'm One" is now working as expected.

The greatest compliment I've ever received was from my old drummer's dad, who was a touring guitarist in the 70s and had played with ZZ Top, Skynyrd, even the Stones and The Who. He came to see us one night and told his son I played more like Entwistle than any other bassist he'd ever seen live. Also to stop racing him to the end of the song! LOL. Such a huge inspiration for me over the years.

Love the video. Definitely John and The Who's most ambitious work. I've been covering Quadrophenia song by song for the last couple years (just finished The Rock)- I noticed an interesting thing in the last few songs: Bell Boy, Dr Jimmy and The Rock are in E flat or have parts in E flat. There are places where, if it was in E, the bass would play an open E or an A as part of a run so you would expect that the bass would be tuned down for these E flat songs. But I think he actually doesn't tune down and still plays low E's and A's but it is so fleeting it doesn't even matter. Only John could get away with that and make it sound good. Also The Rock is the only song I played with a pick, it sounded like he was doing that.

I think "The Punk and The Godfather" is one of finest examples of Entwistle aggresive, melodic, lead-like playing. Of course without The Ox, probably there would be no Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, etc etc.

Hi pal. This was just recommended by the tube algorithm. Nice video. Nice vine. Anyone with a good HI-FI setup can play the Live at Leeds disc and separate the channels. It's at OX volume too. The bass is out of the world. But i guess you knew that already. Kind regards from Valencia Spain.

It might have been a grammar school, but it was around some tough areas from what my dad used to tell me and had some completely unhinged teachers?! He used to tell me about some of the practical jokes the kids would play and the OTT hidings they would get for it. He was in the year above Roger and lived in Ruislip at the time. My stepdad was actually the real big fan despite being a rocker.... he saw them loads of times, says it was worth the damage to his hearing

The Hyde Park gig mentioned was the Prince's Trust Masters of Music Festival in 1996. It was the first time Quadrophenia was performed fully live and included Phil Daniels (the star of the movie) narrating the story along with loads of other guest actors and musicians. At the time it was the largest open air concert to have ever been held in the UK with 170000 people in the crowd. The other acts on the bill were Jules Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Alanis Morrisette, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. It was my first ever proper gig (I still have the program). I was 15 years old, I'd been playing bass myself for less than a year at the time and I spent almost the whole of the Who's set staring in awe at John's incredible playing.

Legends of Bass did a great job. A couple of key points - some of the best bass lines in the Who canon came from Townshend - just listen to Pete's unmatched demos. Also, JE himself said he liked a lot of Pete's lines so much he did not change them. Most of course, he did change, but certainly not all. I saw the Who twice in '76 - great stuff. The other point is, as unhappy as Townshend was with the tapes tour '73, there are many b&w videos from that tour that show how successful they did perform parts of Quadrophenia. One huge problem was that 60's Britian celebreated in Quad was TOTALLY foreign to USA fans. They had no idea what the songs were about. Many had never heard the album. There is nothing remotely similar in our culture. Finally, I know it's sacriliege but the vinyl, original mix of Quad was boring and claustrophobic as hell. It was remixed by JE, in fact. Just listen to Townshend's jaw-dropping demo of Punk & Godfather vs. the original Quad version. Anyway, excellent video.

Very interesting video. I love Quadrophenia. Just a comment on your saying “Umm” and “you know.” Unfortunately, it gets distracting. The best way to stop doing that is to practice pauses. People fill empty silence with “umms,” etc. A speaking coach will be helpful. I am sure there are RU-vid videos on it. Talk to people who had gone to TV & radio broadcasting school. Sometimes it is related to anxiety.
