Firstly however, Sarah Clarke, the first-even female Black Rod - a senior parliamentary official - knocks on the door of the Commons to summon MPs for the Queen’s Speech.
As per tradition, she has the door slammed in her face, and has to knock three times to gain entry.
Black Rod is the Monarch's representative in the Lords, and this routine is meant to symbolise the independence of Commons from the Crown.

Yes and no, in order for traditions to mean anything, they need to be rooted in something that has happened that binds all the people of that tradition. This black rod ceremony (as you know) is done in not just for the sake of doing it, but in remembrance of a event. Trying to force creating a tradition in the name of being unique does nothing, and will just erode away, and block out what could be something greater, or a more defining moment of a nation.

Thank you for this verbal walk-through. I just learned about the Black Rod's role today and Dennis Skinner's quips. How fascinating. After reading John Adams and 1776 it seems like the founding fathers of America didn't keep any of these ceremonial rituals because they wanted to be as far away from the Crown as possible. I suppose it's also why we don't have titles of nobility.
@neil5307
@neil5307 3 года назад
My understanding is that Anti Monarchy was simply a causus Belli for Colonial landowners to avoid taxation. The majority of humble Colonial farmers were pro British.
@rpk5216
@rpk5216 3 года назад
@@neil5307 taxation was a huge part of the rebellion- dare I say the catalyst, but i'm not so sure about the "Pro British" piece. In what sense? Based on what I read it seemed to be of great importance for the First Continental Congress to form a unique identity for the United States. Some people such as John Adams still wanted titles of nobility but it was more for vanity rather than pro-monarchy or pro- Britishness.
@neil5307
@neil5307 3 года назад
@@rpk5216 The wealthy and powerful made the most noise, and the humble farm workers abd small farmers really had to comply with the views of the landowners. Brirain was protecting the Colonists from various enemies, so taxation was reasonable. I think the main issue is that a lot of Colonists were Arable farmers, and not growing cash crops such as tobacco and sugar, and so were less dependent on international trade, or alternatively wanted to start to dictate local cash crop prices.
@imperialviking2817

As the Queen or the monarchy is the institution that hands out titles of nobility you cannot have them without her/it.
@baileybrownlee949
@baileybrownlee949 3 года назад
@@neil5307 actually many of the colonist living in the south were pro British at the start of the war and thought things could be peaceful negotiated. Many of the representatives from the southern colonies were initially against the Declaration of Independence. The northern states is were fighting broke out and Boston was home to lots of revolutionary activity and the region of New England wasn’t known for large scale farming, it was known for maritime activities and in particular smuggling. During the English civil war the colonies weren’t deemed incredibly important so the were left to there own devices and after the war ended England tried to reinstate restrictions and that pissed a lot of people off not just the wealthy land owners. Under English rule colonist weren’t supposed to trade with countries that England didn’t like. The common economic theory on the colonies at the time was that there only purpose was to provided the mother country with ressources and a captive market to sell goods to. But after colonist got a taste of economic freedom many didn’t want to go back to how things were. So yes taxes were a big part of the revolutionary war many of the taxes were on goods nearly everyone in colonies consumed. Also the some of the loudest supporters of succeeding from England was John Adam’s and benjamins Franklin’s both of whom were not large scale land owners. John Adam’s being a lawyer and Benjamin Franklin made a lot of money running a printing press.

It may seem archaic to still have the black rod but this is tradition that evolved over centuries, no one said back then this was how it should evolve but here we are and it is only a symbol. Symbolism may seem out dated but we need them more than ever as a guiding light from where's we've come from and where we're going. It also reminds us of our past, however far removed we are from then.

I think its like that the coming of the black rod was announced by some guards of the house ( a guard even soughted that the black rod is coming when she was on her midway) and the gates are closed by the gates keeper of the house. Thus I think ,in modern days ,this has been made more into a ceremonial sort of thing. She that slams the door which,i guess , signifies that she is asking for the permission to enter the house , and with the commands of the speaker the , gatekeeper might be opening the gates. But the MPs have there own right and hence some MPs may not want to comply with the order of the Queen which the black rod conveys and hence there is a tradition of hackling. I am not an expert but I think this the most rational explanation of this..
