John Deacon's bass lines in this song are just astonishingly melodic and inventive. Freddie's vocal interlude is spine-tingling, and the outro is sublime. It could go on and on, and on, and I'd never tire of it. It's a song that gifts many wonderful experiences to the listener for them to cherish, and I'm grateful for the depth of feeling and gratitude that it encourages.

One of Brian's finest songs in my book. Everything is so heart-felt and beautiful. The chorus is pure joy but the middle part when Freddie takes over - oh my. Absolute perfection. That high note? Goosebumps every time and the solo is not the most complex but one of his most fitting solos. It fits perfectly to the mood of the song. I could listen to that song over and over again.

One of the myriad reasons I have fallen in love with your reactions to the Queen 50 (really looking forward to the second set of Queen 50, coming our way soon, right?) is that while like so many of us you are drawn to the Freddie Mercury aura, but you have also taken the time to get to know the rest of the group a bit, and have realized what special musicians, singers, songwriters and people Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon are (well maybe not so much a singer in John's case). Thank you for all you do, and please continue the Queen journey beyond your first fifty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freddie, Roger and John all had a younger sister but Brian was an only child. Brian has a wide range of song styles from Tie Your Mother Down and Fat Bottomed Girls to '39, All Dead, All Dead, Who Wants To Live Forever, The Show Must Go On, Save Me, It's Late, the Prophet's Song, I could go on and on...There seem to be many sides to him and all of them produce great music!

Brian May, as has been said, has a scientific background, in fact he's qualified to a high level. I think this influences his approach to writing music. Most popular music artists will write from their own experiences, usually in the first person, but Brian May, being a scientist, can look at subjects from different perspectives. The ability to look beyond the obvious is a scientific necessity so it's not that surprising that Brian May can write about a sister he doesn't have. In the Queen song '39', which is written by Brian May, he describes astronauts that leave the Earth to look for a new planet but when they return a whole generation has passed away even though the astronauts were travelling for only a year. This could theoretically happen if the spaceship was travelling at the speed of light (I think) but it's a perfect example of how Brian May's scientific thinking influences how he approaches his songwriting.

This song and Save me Are My favourites from this album. Both written by Brian May. Both very sentimental songs. Brian is often regarded as the rockero in the group. But he has this "soft" side. Brian in my mind has been left out vocally until now. In my perfect world, to encapsulate Brian May completely in his writing, his guitar playing, his orchestration including letting Freddie sing two of the songs (the first three tracks flow together as one) plus one just he sings himself, just play Side White of Queen II and for an encore, you'll get yet another Roger masterpiece to close it out. Procession - highlights through layering, many of the features of the Red Special, built with his father, whom he wrote the second song, Father to Son. It's so emotional that he probably could not have sung it himself, my favorite line from that is, "...but the air you breathe I live to give you...." and White Queen (as it began) is written and preformed so well, you many would think it's a Freddie Masterpiece. Incidentally, Roger's song to close out Side White, Loser in the End, was written for his Mother. Then you flip the album to listen to Side Black which is almost all Freddie.

When in 1977 saw Queen for the first, I was 14 years old and it was on tv, the We Are The Champions video clip. It looked to me that Queen were just Freddie Mercury with three backup musicians. And this because of the special singer's charisma, so different from anything Rock related to that ever listened to or saw. After this, started to buy their previous LPs and noticed how special and good they were, all of them, as a Rock band. The sheer feeling and emotion in their music. I ended up fond of their style. And Brian May still is my favourite guitarist.

As well as do some of his solo works - in particular, "In another World" - written for solo back in the late 80's or early 90's.. not sure of timing.. but "geriatric Brian" (lol) recorded a video for it fairly recently when he was visiting Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain - of course to go the their world-class space observatory... For me this is one of the characteristics of Queen songs... ballads with descending, or ascending, scales of 5 or more notes, that are not separated by more than one tone, or tone and a half (in the laps, don't try so hard, lily of the valley, love of my life, save me, life is real, the hero, it's a hard, friends will be friends, Bohemian and a dozen more)....a Brian May album has structure and Queen sound... an album by Freddie (except for some ballads)... by Roger or or the almost only song by the group Deacon alone......all of them...they don't sound like Queen, Brian does have that sound
@j0hnf_uk
@j0hnf_uk Месяц назад
Brian certainly had his own style when it came to song writing. But then, so did each member of the band. Brian's was pretty standout-ish, though, as it was Queen, but his own little corner, so to speak, where he got to do his own, slightly different way of doing things. And, being Queen, this was well within everyone else's purview. Some other songs that have this Brian trademark on them have already been reacted to, of course, but there's a few others that have been passed or we haven't reached yet. 'Leaving Home Ain't Easy', is one such song, as is, 'Who Wants To Live Forever.' He also did a few solo albums of his own, with the stand-outs being, 'Too Much Love Will Kill You', (which was later covered by Queen), and, 'Driven By You', which was adapted and used to advertise a certain brand of car in the early 90's!

Very happy that Vlad included this one in the 50 you are reacting to. A lovely song and your analysis was very enjoyable. You are now entering into what I'd describe as "Queen's second half" of their career, though you could probably parse it even more than that. During the first half, Freddie's songs - in total - represented the very best from the band and were a large part of the band's creative and commercial success. And this is not to take anything away from Brian, whose songwriting was very strong through this whole period as well. In the band's second half, I would argue that Brian's songs - in total - were the best among the band members, especially when you consider quantity of output. The quality of Brian's songwriting throughout Queen's career never dipped, and possibly got better over the years. The same could be said of Roger's and John's, though neither wrote the quantity of songs that Brian and Freddie wrote. For me, the quality of Freddie's songwriting - and perhaps his songwriting choices - declined considerably during this second half. And to me this has always been the difference between 70's and 80's Queen and why I'm so ambivalent about much of their 80's work. Because of how much you identified with the songs Freddie wrote in the 70's, I've wondered when you're finished and reflect back on all 50 if the "second half" Queen will feel like a bit of a letdown (this song of course, would not be part of that - it's excellent but also not one of Freddie's)

It might be worth it to look back over your list at this point and group the songs you've already done by writer. :) we will rock you, tie your mother down, fat bottomed girls, keep yourself alive... All Brian. So is The Prophet's Song, which you skipped, and is very different (their longest, I think); so is probably their hardest song, Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme), which is on a later album... He is heart-wrenching singing "Too much love will kill you" (about his divorce). It is interesting that you hear the positivity in this so strongly, which is not something I really associate with Brian - I've heard him talk about his depression multiple times. He seems very sensitive an quietly passionate. But you are right, he does have an ability to focus on the beauty as well.

For me this is the album where Queens music steps around the corner into a slightly more dodgy area of town. I think at this point it sounds like Freddie was getting bored of this type of music. The production on The Game is also very different to previous albums: A producer called Reinhold Mack who was hastily drafted in by Freddie, persuaded the band not to play with each other while recording anymore, the parts were "punched in" together, and it sounds like it. A lot of much more B-grade material on this album. Better songs on it are Save Me, The Game, Crazy Little Thing and their pop disco hit. The rest is 'filler', but 'filler' made by an A1 rock band of course .

I don't think he is singing about a real sister. I believe he is singing about a girlfriend (sister) who is leaving him

As a gay man - this song is probably why my sister left on a boat
