No way! All you need is four of those babies as power plants for a quad rotor helicopter. The air flow be default of flight would naturally dissipate the heat issue. Thank for posting!

Nice, I've never heard of any quad rotors running around. My first car was a RX3, my second was a RX4, But I got out of the scene about the time 20Bs came around. Rotary exhausts always run hot, 2 cumbustions per revolution. I've seen a normal 2 rotor sit on the spot and do a burnout for 2 min, but then the exhaust was bright red and drooping down about 2" to the ground it was so hot. Nice motor here, an absolute beast.

Yeah, his Dad did build it & I've known him for years. He's a tuning guru that a lot of people turn to in Oz (including me). And it does run the quarter mile without burning down. It does last longer than a 6 second pass, etc. And it is now twin turbo. Go and do a search on Queens Street Racing on here & you will see all forms of vids of the car on the chassis, dyno, shake downs at the track, etc.

TARBABY71 thanks for the reply I've seen it a few times now in a couple of different colours but I must say the current chrome colours looks fantastic!!!!! it does have a mad sound. this car could put down some great times once they get their chassis & package worked out. its amazine how sometimes less power gets better times & lanches. it just goes to show there's is a lot more to drag racing than people realise. I take my hat off to queen street for thinking outside of the box!!!

That is simply amazing, rotaries don't need as much horsepower to compete with bigger engines, a 350hp 3 rotor can keep up with a 800hp V8. I don't want to be near that thing when fire comes out, let alone sitting in the car that it powers.

Hence the reason for the Intercooler in most turbo and supercharged vehicles. It cools the air before it gets to the intake manifold, so you have better combustion. Probably not as hot as you think.

danmcgraw41 yes this will work in a car !!! this motor sits in a bmw 3 series drag car owned by queen street smash in brisbane australia it does 7 sec quater miles(not bad) they have been running this car for a few years now !! they were one of the first 4 rotor drag cars in the world . the engine is 2 13b engines joined together (laimens terms) not a r26b from the lemans mazda. the turbo manifold does get pretty hot but turbo set ups more so on dyno's can see upwards of 1000c with no probs
@zlaya84
@zlaya84 11 лет назад
Well, sometimes they are, when the thermal expansion warps the flange enough to make gaps between the head and the manifold. You could try and force the flange straight by having thick studs and potentially destroying the stud or thread in the head or you can just let it warp and have heavy duty springs or a fairly long pipe as a washer. The flames aren't as destructive as the very hot gases that escapes tough, since those travel much further in the engine bay before cooling down.
@highvoltagefeathers
@highvoltagefeathers 11 лет назад
If you watched the video, and are not blind, you saw puffs of flame outside the exhaust manifold (which is, as name implies, a manifold to contain exhaust gasses). The failure of this particular exhaust manifold to contain the flaming exhaust gasses is unusual, and noteworthy. Hence the exagerated remark: "Was that engine on fire for a moment?" Do you not understand how exhaust manifolds work? I'm fairly certain they are not designed to leak flames everywhere.
@buymeaskyline
@buymeaskyline 15 лет назад
It probably is as hot as I think. Sure, it's cooled by the intercooler but the reading for pressure is taken from the lines between the intake manifold and the ECU. Which in turn, still means there's 30PSI+ of pressure in the intake manifold. And as you should know, pressure = heat.

This is true in a sense if the engine was made to an equivelent amount of cylinders it would benefit even more so as it does have a far better efficency over a standard engine. My point is still valid regardless of the chambers.

@MetAlParA
@MetAlParA 15 лет назад
I would say it's a combination of heat and pressure from trying to get the gasses out so fast that the exhaust manifold gasket cant take it.. Or that's what it looks like to me at least. Also this thing sounds awesome!
@jcadlols
@jcadlols 13 лет назад
@ThePwnSho Simply the strength of the rotors and eccentric shaft. The inertia of the rotors is what causes problems. I have heard of 13b's missing shifts with the throttle flat (or sticking) and going to 16500rpm, Some of them being fine. Apparently the 10a rotary will take a lot of revs. Probably due to smaller rotor size and mass.
@bcboy787
@bcboy787 13 лет назад
@TheMadkent It's not an exhaust manifold; a manifold collects all exhaust gases into one tube. It would be an exhaust header, even though it sounds funny in singular form.
@camelotdream
@camelotdream 14 лет назад
It probably sounds like it's high RPM as it is not a piston engine for one. The second most important reason is that there is three power "strokes" per rotor per one RPM of the crank. A piston engine would have one power stroke per piston....they rev very quick as there is no valve train to spin and a low mass on the rotation assembly.

@JohnJaggerJack
@JohnJaggerJack 14 лет назад
think like this: in each rotor you have 3 face for combustion, its like having 3 pistons in the same cilinder, if you multiply by 4 (the # of rotors) you''l get the equivilant of a v12 in the same space as inline 4 cilinder engine! i call that OWNAGE! add the same turbo harge used in v12 and you'll get PWNAGE!! all that in could fit in 2hp citroen or on a big bike!! very dangerous technology if you ask me!

@Grid100 I have both engines in my garage. I don't have a scale but the turbo 13b REW does not weigh 70kg with all the accesories turbo, manifolds and plumbing. I would not say the LS1 is twice a turbo 13b more like 20 - 25 kg heavier if that
@rotor13
@rotor13 16 лет назад
what matters is the CFM the engine is getting at a particular PSI level. on turbo'd street cars, any sharp bends in the i/c plumbing will create a pressure drop, which is due to the fact "street" turbos flow much less air than a turbo as big as say... a GT42R. on this setup however, the kink is there due to space constraints for the car, which went into an M3 drag car called "Barbie" in austrailia. and in no way affects the engines ability to make power. efficiency doesnt matter in a drag setup
@li7in6
@li7in6 15 лет назад
you want high exhaust gas temperatures. the heat causes rapid exhaust gas expansion. the more volume of gas flowing through the turbine the faster the turbo spools. its commonplace for high performance turbocharged engines to glow their manifolds on a high power pull.

Check out the dyno sheet. RPM is the far left column, then HP then torque. Based on that assumption peak torque was at 7100rpm and peak power was at 7800rpm. I'm pretty sure I'm right about the sheet ;)

@131madman Rotaries make much more power per liter than pistons engines. In a 4 cycle, a piston only fires once for every 2 trips up and down. In a rotary, each side fires every time it comes back around. So in a 4 cycles, you get 1 combustion per cylinder cycle while in a rotary you get 3. FD tuners regularly get 300+ hp out of a 1.3 liter rotary with ease. What makes them problematic is that the seals go thru more thermal expansions per cycle than piston engines and so they wear out faster.

Rotary engines literally spit fire into the exhaust pipe. Unlike their piston counterparts, there is no valve to buffer the out flow, so the flame, at high RPMS (they're probably pushing 8500-10k here) will spit out of every possible spot. As you can see, the pipes glow, if you were to hit the pipes at max RPM, they'd deform severely.

Had a 92 GTR stock RB26DETT and at the same time a 93 RX7 stock, both equally a blast to drive and of course the RX7 was a faster accellerating machine, quicker steering but the GTR...I love cars that are fun to drive...piston engines are cheap to make... and more complicated....Wankels r not shit...they r different. If we wer all the same we would all have a boaring, mundane 350 chev like every knuckle head had in school...I kicked their asses with a 1100 CC mini cooper!!! Different Rocks!

True, but to think that there are so many hot rods and tuners with well over 1000bhp from V8s and (in this case) rotaries, and the Veyron has a W16 with only 1000 bhp. Why not something much larger? The technology has gotta out there.

Horsepower doesnt literally mean it would take that many horses to do the same work as that engine. It used to but that was to measure steam engines and draft horses. One horsepower is the amount of power it takes to perform 33,000 (ft-lb) of work in one minute. Not to be confused with (lb-ft).
