I remember a quote from Matt, the drummer from the arctic monkeys from a while ago when he said "I thought I was alright on the drums... Then I saw qotsa and realized I had to hit the drum 100 times harder. Pretty funny
"You can't be in the Queens and try to be somebody else." That shit is true, everybody who's been in QOTSA has brought their own piece to it. Grohl is a legend and possibly my favorite drummer, but he had too much shit on his own plate to be in two bands. So they brought in someone different yet equally badass. Joey's the shit.
@@KaiserBecks i still love the band. I just really miss the unpredictability of the Song For The Deaf lineup. You never knew who would be singing and Dave Grohl’s drumming brings a lot of energy to any band
Joey was the best drummer for Queens, although Dave is amazing. With Joey, the songs really held together and the band as a whole sounded so powerful. Dave isn't quite as much of an engine room!
Respect to Joey, but he speeds up too often. I think Dave is better. I also think Jon Theodore was a steal for the band, he fits in so well. Just imagine Nick Oliveri still in the band.
@@inalavalamp 100% I think Theodore will prove to be the pick of the bunch. At first i thought he was a bit sedate by comparison to Grohl or Joey. But he's picked up a harder edge in his time so far with the band, and he's definitely the most technical and textured player out of all of them.
You know.. Both drummers are bad ass. I mean, Dave's a legend... But Joey is a beast! Watch live performances on both drummers and you can tell that they both are very different and very talented. I guess what I have to say is is that there isn't a rivalry.. Just a lot of people who wanna distinguish which drummer is better.. And really, in truth.. Both drummers are awesome.
"He's Dave, I'm me." Yep, that hits it. I will say that Joey has a very similar drum style (Bonham-ish) to Dave's. A couple of people pointed out that Joey doesn't play note-for-note like Dave, which would be silly to request. I will say that on technique, Dave is probably better (e.g. playing a steady hi-hat beat while playing Song for the Dead - Joey doesn't seem to do that). Also, Dave's more creative than Joey with rhythms. Joey is similar (if not more) in terms of the "energy" you hear in the music (i.e., tempo, fills, his expressions, the tightness of the group with his playing, etc). But I would say that a record would be better with Grohl's playing. Now, Jon Theodore is technically better than both these guys (hands down, in my opinion). But, the vibe is different with Jon's playing (perhaps his beats/feel/technique is too complicated?). Jon is a really, really good example of how different the feel goes from similar dudes like Joey and Dave and add in a technically gifted, super intelligent drummer (who is less inclined to use poppy drum beats for the more interesting beats and time signatures).
@offdutyjie dave grohl seems way more crisp in the way he plays. joey seems way more raw and the way he plays is like straight agro energy. I like joeys style better but everyone to their own.
Listen to the album Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta. It features Jon Theodore on drums, who is now the drummer that 'beat like a baby' for QOTSA. Listen to that album and tell me you think he is a soft hitter, or is in anyway not competent enough fto play in Queens. Anyway, Joey is a beast of a drummer, and sounds like a cool dude.
@@dariohenriquez7773 he’s only ‘toned down’ because he writes and plays what the music dictates. He wouldn’t play a straight down the line 4/4 on Day Of The Baphomets, cause that’s not what the song needs. He also wouldn’t hit 16th ghost notes and clave rhythm hats on Song For The Dead because that would be ridiculous. He plays to serve the tune.
Matt played "Born to Hula" according to the Kyuss/QOTSA split ep, which were all tracks recorded during the Gamma Ray sessions. Vic did play on the other two tracks, "If Only Everything", and "Spiders and Vinegaroons"(which wasn't on the G.A. ep). I just consider Matt thier first drummer since Vic never played any live shows, and their first live show had Matt, Josh, John McBain on second guitar, and Mike Johnson from Dinosaur Jr. on bass. I was wrong about Van, he only played on If Only withVic
Fun Fact: When Danzig's original drummer Chuck Biscuits left the band, Danzig wanted Dave Grohl. That didn't happen but Danzig found Joey Castillo. Years later, Joey went on to play for QOTSA after Grohl left.
When I'm asked who my favorite Queens drummer is, I get some pretty puzzled looks when I answer "Matt Cameron". Little do they no, he was actually their first drummer, with Van Conner on bass. Look it up, kids.
I think they each fit a different style of Queens songs. Dave seems to fit in better for songs like Avon, or No One Knows, while Joey is the kind of guy I'd want behind the set for songs like Better Living or Song For the Dead. But it honestly doesn't matter, they both work perfectly with the band.
SHIT! I just went through that whole explanation and then I saw you said "also on". You probably knew that the whole time... gotta read the fine print...
Yea. Even if the Dave Grohl question is B.S even to him, I believe you gotta have the balls to ask him what people are saying in the "community" or other wise. Thats part of the job. You cant be afraid to TALK.
Recommendation for your next video....please do it somewhere a little quieter. All I hear is the roar of diesel trucks and city clatter. Takes away from the interview. Cheers mate.
He's gotten much better since the Vulgaris tour I think. He's more precise on that drum intro now instead rush fucking it out the horizon like he used to.
