1. Battle Royale (his favourite and number one!!!)
(Dir. Kinji Fukasaku 2000).
Ps. The other movies are in alphabetic order
2. Anything Else (Dir. Wood Allen 2003).
3. Audition (Dir. Takashi Miike 1999).
4. The Blade (Dir. Hark Tsui 1995).
5. Boogie Nights (Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson 1997).
6. Dazed & Confused (Dir. Richard Linklater 1993).
7. Dogville (Dir. Lars von Trier 2003).
8. Fight Club (Dir. David Fincher 1999).
9. Friday (Dir. F. Gary Gray 1995).
10. The Host (Dir. Joon-ho Bong 2006).
11. The Insider (Dir. Michael Mann 1999).
12. Joint Security Area (Dir. Chan-wook Park 2000).
13. Lost In Translation (Dir. Sofia Coppola 2003).
14. The Matrix (Dir. Andy Wachowski & Larry Wachowski 1999).
15. Memories of Murder (Dir. Joon-ho Bong 2003).
16. Police Story 3: Super Cop (Dir. Stanley Tong).
17. Shaun of the Dead (Dir. Edgar Wright 2004).
18. Speed (Dir. Jan de Bont 1994).
19. Team America (Dir. Trey Parker 2004).
20. Unbreakable (Dir. M. Night Shyamalan 2000).
In 2009, Quentin Tarantino did a brief interview with Sky Movies ahead of the release of Inglorious Bastards. Long regarded as a walking movie encyclopedia, Tarantino rattled off a list of his 20 favorite films since 1992 - the year he made his directorial debut with "Reservoir Dogs". Kinji Fukasaku's "Battle Royale" is the only film the director cited as his runaway pick for number one, but he declined to rank the others, opting instead to name them in alphabetical order (listed above). Astonishing!!!

Couldn’t agree more with his talk on The Matrix, I love how the first one is a self contained film that wraps up nicely and makes you think a lot. But then came the sequels, which thoroughly explains everything and leaves nothing to the imagination, and adds to the lore making it come off more bloated than creative.

Me too, kind of, but I would argue that if Tarantino gets started on cinema, especially about movies he loves, he knows himself that he's gonna go on and on for literally hours. He must have made a huge effort to limitate himself because he's aware of that I think, and he didn't even want to get started on that. And I would also argue that he has, and will make interviews in which he talks about it during hours. Still this list was really interesting so yeah on this one I really wished he had talk more.

Just because most of you Marvel-loving generation of kids who are clueless about foreign-language & Golden-age cinema typically showed no interest in Bong Joon-ho's work until he won a Best Picture Oscar doesn't make him some hidden talent, he made numerous incredibly well received films & was an extremely revered filmmaker long before then, he's even made films that were even better than Parasite. Quite sad how many people who claim to be film lovers only acknowledge all the great directors that are outside of the US & the mainstream only if they win an Oscar or something. SMDH

His gems include the all famous Old Boy, JSA (As mentioned in the list), and the Handmaiden. JSA in particular had such a powerful impact on me when i watched it for the first time when i was 15. Anyway, lots of good movies to see in Asian cinema.

The plot makes no sense whatsoever. While the hunger games movie sucked at least the plot was believable. You have an evil government punishing the little states by killing off their kids with weapons that they could never use to turn against the government with, makes sense. BR just has “the adults want kids to stay in school and not do drugs” so they send them off to kill each other to...make them attend, when all but one of them is dead, and the one that survived is fucked up? Like it’s more fun to watch, especially when a bunch of stupid high school drama suddenly becomes real and bloody, but I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece.

@@HDsharp I love the film's ending. I think the end is poetically beautiful. During the film, you know, you have these characters trying to catch this killer who just keeps slipping away. It's frustrating and tiring to the detectives. Eventually, they are drove to their limits. Spoilers. But, when the movie ends, it takes place when the main detective is far away from that life. When he goes to where the first body was found and he meets the girl who told him about the killer being there, it's the closest he's ever been to him. To knowing who it was. Long after the chase. And when he looks at the audience during the final shot, he is looking to the killer who could be watching the film, being the closest to the real killer as well. That was the director's hope at least, that the killer the story is based on would see it. And he did, said it was a great film. I hope this paragraph made some sense.

It is true that the Matrix sequels aren´t as good movie wise, but both were necessary to continue explaining the meaning of the first one, which is neo's first awakening until reaching enlightenment at the end of Revolutions. Many people just didn´t understand them that's why ''they hated them''. That trilogy imo has the deepest meaning of life and existence of any movie I have seen. However, it is not a surprise that an unenlightened civilization as we are, thought that the movie was about action/adventure..
@AirCanada1J5
@AirCanada1J5 10 лет назад
I agree, but the first movie as a standalone is actually a lot better than the other two. I'm POSITIVE Tarantino understood and had deep thought on the second two, it's just the way it was filmed was poor compared to the first. The first was raw and grungy that helped bring out different emotions and mood of the movie, while the second two were CGI made, too much computer animation to make you feel connected like the first one. Also the flying and new wardrobes weren't as 'worn' feeling as the first. Yeah the stories are still great in the sequels, but it was just executed poorly and for that Tarantino has a right to dislike them.
@AirCanada1J5
@AirCanada1J5 10 лет назад
Tarantino says 'the mythology was all ruined' which probably has to do with the fact there was no mystery involved anymore and the fact everyone was meaningless after the architect speech. Morpheus, the agents, trinity, they all were just cycled characters in the one's turn to restore the Matrix. Yeah, this time he changed it, but it was still all predetermined stuff which rubs a guy like Tarantino the wrong way as well as me. Adding that the whole philosophy was a waste of time/lie, basically EVERYTHING was pointless except for him making a deal with the head machine. The movie was MUCH better when the Agents were the main villains, Morpheus mattered, no CGI, and Neo didn't fly around like superman.
@AirCanada1J5
@AirCanada1J5 10 лет назад
and I've read all the prequel and sequel story to the trilogy, I still will agree the first is by far the best one and the movie sequels were executed poorly compared to the perfect masterpiece Matrix.

***** If you read commentary by those fan boys on forums you can see them talk about how there are flaws in the original trilogy that one would break down in a literary analysis as being basic story telling conceits. One person claimed that without the prequel trilogy the opening of Episode 4 made no sense. Apparently they didn't understand the concept of in medias res. I think we're living in a culture that was raised on exhaustive exploration of every nook and cranny in a franchise for the sake of marketing more product and people don't know any better so they just keep looking for the answers. Its pretty sad really.

Baloney it's a "masterpiece". If Bill Murray weren't in it, and she weren't Coppola's daughter (and all the money and influence that provides) the film would have to settle for good effort. It is not underrated, it's overrated. And that's the point, his list is ridiculous. He is (in interviews at least) an unreliable persona mostly interested in being a self-styled provocateur.

+squ34ky2 My only hope is that others read this as sarcasm--very nice. A dying art form these days.

I wish I had only watched The Matrix (1) and someone had told me to never watch 2 or 3...

I've only watched Star Wars episodes 4, 5, 6... back in its original form before the re-edits. And I've never seen 1-3, or any of the movies that came after 6. My experience with Star Wars begins with IV: A New Hope and ends with Return of the Jedi and the famous holograms. I've been told by people to never ruin that experience, and so I've decided I never will. In fact, I have the old VHS's of the originals before Lucas went all digital and CGI on them.

I've always been able to look at movies in the context of their release. I watch The Matrix and it ends at that for me. Star Wars is the same way. It's three movies and that's it. The rest of the films are basically fan fiction or just cash grabs. I don't just look at the franchise's canon and have to hold to it like gospel. In the original Star Wars, I know Darth Vader's turn to the dark side wasn't suppose to happen like it did in Revenge Of The Sith, so when I watch the original trilogy I don't look at that way.

I remember when Unbreakable was just panned by critics. But I fucking loved every second, I got it. And all my ignorant friends somehow got it and liked it just as much. Only the Hollywood far left can't seem to see greatness when they see it, their heads are so far up their butts of 'filmmaking theory' that they can't see a good story anymore.

Quentin has such questionable taste sometimes. 'Supercop' is average Chan fare, both story-wise, and action-wise. It can't even begin to compare to, say, 'Drunken Master II.' Now *that* contains some of the best fight scenes ever filmed.

There is a difference between fight scenes and stunts. Super cop had some crazy set pieces including having Jackie Chan actually hang from a helicopter 1000 ft in the air. There are plenty of Jackie Chan movies with better fights, but damn did they go all out with the stunts in supercop
