SEASON 3 TRAILER OF QUEST FOR CRAFT, the series by Questlove in partnership with The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky. A “conversational investigation” of craft and creativity, each episode explores a specific theme, combining free-wheeling dialogue between Questlove and a fellow creative along with other interviews, animations and documentary segments. The main conversations are filmed at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City (commissioned by Jimi Hendrix in 1968).
CHAPTER 9. CRAFT AND JOY WITH MULTI-FACETED MUSICIAN ANDERSON .PAAK
Questlove and Anderson .Paak explore how the motivation to bring people joy affects one’s creative output. The discussion ranges form Paak’s original motivation to make his mother dance - to issues around instinct and collaboration. The episode includes an interview with science journalist and TED speaker Catherine Price about how joy enhances people’s performance and creative output.
CHAPTER 10. CRAFT AND CONNECTION WITH LEGENDARY CELLIST YO-YO MA.
In a discussion that ranges from the humorous to the profound, Questlove and Yo-Yo Ma dive into the importance of human connection as it relates to craft and creativity. The episode features a documentary segment on the Silk Road Ensemble, a group founded by Yo-Yo Ma to embody the possibilities of cross-cultural collaboration.
CHAPTER 11. CRAFT AND COMMITMENT WITH COMEDIAN AND ACTOR FRED ARMISEN. Questlove and Fred Armisen dig into the impact of commitment on one’s creative work, discussing Armisen’s journey from drummer to SNL cast member to comic actor. The episode further explores commitment as it applies to improvisation with a documentary on the Upright Citizen’s Brigade featuring improvisational actor Carl Tart.
CHAPTER 12. CRAFT AND VOICE WITH EMMY-WINNING WRITER LENA WAITHE.
Questlove and Lena Waithe go deep into issues around the importance of voice and creativity. In an animated segment, Questlove explains how he developed his own voice, first as a musician and now as a filmmaker. Note: Interview with Lena Waithe was recorded prior to The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
