I appreciate the time and effort you take to share your work and testing. I’m building your air cleaner over the holiday break along with some other shop projects. The plus side of the internet/RU-vid is that it has created new opportunities to learn. The negative side is that it emboldens a-holes that would never say the things they write in comment sections.

I have two of the duct taped filters on a fan and they work great. I plan on building a box like yours to make it easier to get the filters off to blow them out. Trolls are people who just want to feel like they know everything. Thanks for all your videos.

Rob, your rant hit the nail on the head. I completely agree that, with very few exceptions, the woodworking community are a great bunch of men and women. Most enjoy seeing what others create and have better things to do than nit-pick and....well, you said it best. I throughly enjoy your videos. BTW, I am about to steal your great air cleaner design. I think it is great.

Love the air cleaner. It’s going to get built for my shop. Every wood worker I’ve met through RU-vid or Instagram has been very cool. I’m an intermediate woodworker. I help all as I have been helped. The community is awesome. Cheers

Ya man. You may not have a million subs but I always look forward to your videos because I know it will be good content. Keep it up. A thought I had while watching your video was, “man, why give the haters the time of day?” but your closing remarks made it worth it. Hopefully a few were listening, and maybe you made them think.

Buddy you rock. I understand what your air cleaner does. After all Jet makes a table top (or you can suspend it in your work shop) that is just a little bigger than the unit you made and all it has is two filters. It's not a Hepa machine or a air purifier. It just traps the dust. Keep up the good work.

I used your video and Izzy's to create a similar shop air filter. My shop is a 2 car garage and I have a front and back filter on it. It is awesome to run about 30 mins prior to painting or applying a finish....no more dust landing on the project. Should have done this years ago. I even took time to paint the outside of it.....because that is what I wanted to do. You keep on cranking out your content the way you want and ignore the trolls. I appreciate learning from you!

If you put yourself out there you got to keep a thick skin. Ultimately it's your shop and if it makes you happy, enjoy. Stick to it with pride. Personally I can relate, because I have been setting up my own shop doing things like I want and family and friends will tell me " that's overkill ", "just slap that crap together ". I just smile and tell them it's my shop and it makes me happy , and that's how it is. I'm usually don't post anything, but this video just hit a nerve. I pray God gives us patience to deal with people who get off on trying to hurt others for kicks.

I tried this same thing for a while, I don't think the fan I used was quite strong enough though. I also did furnace filters that were a little too restrictive on the air flow. Didn't have as many filters either. But the thing I was frustrated with was not having a good way to mount it to the ceiling, and also the way that dust would blow out when first turning it on. Made in pretty clear to me that it wasn't very efficient. I do think it's the ideal setup for paint/varnish station ventilation. Having one setup to pull fumes and floating particles away from spraying on projects works really good as long as there is an exit vent out of the shop, preferably. I did eventually break down and purchase the cheapest wood shop air filtration I could find and I've been very satisfied with it. The initial filter is washable (saving $) and the triple bag inner filter catches a lot of dust, I never see any dust come through the exit side when turning it on. I've been very pleased with it and happy I made the change. I hope this works well for you, but I do hope in the future you can make the change to something more efficient. If you watch Jay Bate's channel you know not too long ago he developed some pretty bad health problems his doctor attributed to the dust and it sidelined him for a while and threatened his business. It would be tragic to be made ill from something you love to do. Great video.

I made a similar. Yours is real nice. Mine is nothing more than the same box fan, a 20x20 furnace filter & a bungee cord & hang it from my garage door track. It works, that’s all that matters to me. Ignore the trolls. They have nothing better to do.

Thanks for this video. It is unfortunate that jerks are allowed to trash talk those who actually contribute something to the community they are focusing on -in this case woodworkers- and making a difference to those of us who are trying to learn new ways to create. I have never found one of your projects to be ill-conceived or sloppy in design. Would I have done it differently? Of course, but that is the beauty of this craft. (and I use CRAFT deliberately) You are a craftsman, thanks for what you contribute.

Please please Mr Franklin, take absolutely no f . . king notice at all of those people who, for whatever reason, don’t have anything to say, other than vitriol. I was brought up with the understanding that; .......... ............. if one had nothing good to say then, one should say nothing at all ...........! And at 70 yrs of age, that has stood me in good stead. I really can’t understand why, if one didn’t agree or, one didn’t find it at all to one’s liking, then one wouldn’t say anything at all. All the very best for 2020 John Bell London England

I like your filter system. It’s not overkill. I’ve been toying with upgrading the “filters duct taped to a box fan” to yours because it seems a little more logical to me. BTW I also appreciate “cheap” because I’m not made of money, just usual human anatomy stuff.

Wandel and Heisz also have cleaners like this, seems like a great solution for reducing dust in the air. Sadly I don't think filters like that are sold here in Norway. As far as dumb YT comments the fact is that no matter how good content there's always some naysayer or troll in the comments. Your content is GREAT, just keep doing your thing and ignore the BS ;)

Very well done video. I agree - if you have nothing nice or productive to say - don't say it. I loved your video and your thought process. If it works for you - it works! As far as fancy tools - I've many pieces of furniture made 100 years ago with handtools that can easly outlast anything made today, tools don't make the craftsman - experiance and knowledge do, imho. Keep up the great work. You are providing this free - so, what's there to complain about?

I saw the title of this vid and thought, "yeah, I'll bet his isn't as great as mine!" Well, yours is very similar to mine in design, but better made. Mine is over-thought, more complicated and heavier, but the basic idea is the same. I have 3 slots for filters on each side of the fan. I'm using a MERV-2 filter in the intake, and a MERVE-13 on the outflow side. Mine is hung from the ceiling near my table saw, just cause that was the best place I could find for it. I haven't decided about adding more filters, but the slots are there if I want to use them in the future. WOOD Magazine did as shop test feature about air filtration units in their July, 2019 issue. The tested 9 commercially-made filtration units. They threw in a box-fa and furnace filter just for fun. They didn't say how they attached the filter to the fan, duct tape, bungee cords or what. The commercial units had price tags from $225 to $700. They tested the units for both air flow and for time to reduce particle counts from a standard high level to a low level equivalent to average room air.in a set volume of air. The box fan beat 2 commercial units on the air-flow test and three on the efficiency test! I figure that if my unit is slower than 7 of the commercial units, I'll just leave it running longer! I also am not about to spend hundreds of dollars on a particle tester, but I'm convince that my filter unit works well. And it is a great value, if the WOOD Magazine test are to be believed. Thanks for a great video, and for a great channel. Your woodworking skills are well ahead of mine, but I feel like this is a "growing together" channel more than a guru telling us what to do, and I like that.

I haven't had that many issues yet with these so called "trolls", perhaps one day when I get more subscribers. But agree with everything you said here, if you wouldn't say it to my 6' 5", 300lbs self, why say it on the internet! I honestly watch most RU-vid videos for entertainment and ideas, well except for how to fix your car videos (I watch those to learn to fix my car), I can't imagine many people are planning on building everything they watch on RU-vid, so let's just all play nice. As far as trolls go, I like the idea of collecting the little *#*turds comments for comparison with other RU-vidrs to laugh at. Perhaps, create a collective database to ban them and make them vanish like sawdust through a filter.

Aren't there reusable filters on the market for this kind of application? I like the setup though. It's quite obvious that it works, as you can see the dust coming off of them as you remove them.

Hello there. I am a hobbyist woodworker, & public health professional. Currently, I am still enrolled in the Masters of Public Health program the the University of New Hampshire Graduate School. I don’t claim to be a professional on air quality, specifically the GRAS ppm (parts per million) levels of sawdust / wood particulate matter. Your state’s public health lab or in some cases even you community’s local health department will be able to instruct you how to gather an air quality sample & have the lab analyze the sample for you. WAYYYY cheaper than outfitting you workshop with air quality measuring equipment purchased at the Home Cheap-ot store down the street. If these trolls are really getting to you in the comments, get a sample analyzed at the health lab. Common sense says if there’s anything at all caught in the filters, it’s better than no filtration at all. A box fan like that wouldn’t be able to push air through a filter with a MERV rating intended for sterilized surgical areas anyways! It’s a wood shop; NOT A HOSPITAL! To the guy who claims he farts more air than the fan, did you use a filter rated too high on the MERV index? Does the fan just need to be replaced with something not purchased from Wally World? If those two questions don’t raise any thoughts about the efficacy of the build, you should seriously consider calling your doctor 😂 😂
