It’s a pity, too, because other than this, their CEO seems like a really cool, really down to Earth guy. I’d describe him as the anti-Elon. But their response to Zach and Andrea’s review kind of soured me on the brand, which is too bad, because the R2 looks like an amazing vehicle.
I can see why Rivian didn't like your review; because it was honest! I agree with the key points you both made, especially the price... ugh. Rivian should look at the feedback they get objectively and act on it if warranted. Acting like a child by denying you future reviews doesn't help their brand.
i haven't watched your Rivian review yet, but i am going to now. My opinion on what would've been an appropriate response from Rivian is that they provide a statement for you to read on your channel. State that they appreciate and welcome the feedback Zack and Andrea gave, and that the information will be sent up the chain of command to help improve our future products. Even the best restaurants in the world receive critical reviews, and the reason they thrive is because they keep their mouth shut and listen to the customer.
I like your reviews. They are engaging because of the banter, anecdotes, family references, jokes. Other reviews seem very dry and businesslike. Although some might prefer that. Also if you don’t like a car (like the Rivian) you’ll say so. If Mazda can make more comfy seats and successfully implement the Toyota hybrid system, their sales would go through the roof
15:49 glad you guys dont act like other journalist that are just marketing vehicles on behalf of companies just to get a vehicle. This is the exact reason why we love your channel..!! Practical, truth, real feel and genuine opinion. ..! And Zack great job at just saying things directly without beating around the bush..!! Love it
Thank you. Great episode, as always. Your comment about the Rivian truck just exposed how that upstart is missing the mark with PR. Love the channel, keep up the good work.
Not to burst anybody's bubble, but mainstream auto makers do this kind of stuff too. That's why everybody tries to stay "positive" so that they don't get cut from testers and embargo dates.
Agreed! Shame on whoever criticized her, their attitude is cringeworthy and self-centered. I thought it was cool when I learned that we have different pronunciations.
Great questions, answers and good points. As Canadian we are very careful what we spend on. Like the electric vehicles are too expensive compared to hybrid vehicles. Great show Andrea! ☕️☕️
Well that's why you can't trust most of these youtube reviews for all these things because companies like Rivian pressure the reviewers and most of the reviewers are biased because of this. Its good that you are being transparent about these issues and thanks for your honest reviews.
@@vancity2349the original model S would have cost between 85.1 and 140.3K adjusted for inflation…. Which matches what Rivian charges today for as groundbreaking of a product
The latest data on car depreciation is that gas cars lose around 19% of their value in two years and the all electric cars ( EV) are losing around 37% of their value in two years. Ouch!
In the Netherlands we had a great push of EV's last years (mostly subsidized company cars). Now that the subsidies have been reduced a lot, the sales are in free fall. And those EV cars who are going to the used market after 4 years have lost gigantic in value. 3/4 year old EV's for even less than half the price. Going from 60k to 30/25k. People looking for used cars don't want EV's with a questionable range / battery.
On pronunciation of "Mazda" - for this U.S. guy, I'm fine with the more typically Canadian pronunciation, especially by Andrea. Though TBH, as someone who grew up around Chicago, proper English isn't really our first language. Kidding aside - great show, keep up the good work .
Guys stick to your honest unbiased opinion. If Rivian don’t supply you with a car then there is something they are worried about. After all it is just an EV. HYBRID is the way to go. Keep up the good work. You guys are getting noticed. Happy for motormouth. 👍👍👌👌
I think the USA gets more cars from Toyota they make more profit in USA. If you look at CDN on prices and equate in USD the cars are cheaper in Canada so they would rather sell in USA!
The truth hurts. Rivian acting like a spoiled immature child. Aww, you made them pout. Any legitimate company would welcome honest feedback and critiques in order to assess and use the information to make a better product
As a EV owner I totally understand why people don't want to buy them. It works well for me because I have other vehicles and I can charge it at my home so I love my Chevy bolt EUV, but I couldn't imagine it being my only vehicle it would drive me insane due to the charging networks there are none where I live.
Got an Outback Touring XT 24, and it's great! I wish it sat higher , but the seats and drive are great. I am glad i got the turbo. The carcarenut just put out a great video about turbo engines. It boils down to maintenance and how hard you keep pushing the engine. A Subaru with good maintenance lasts hundreds of thousands of miles.
Turbos and hybrids pack way more components into the engine compartment. Turbos might be reliable (I don't think they are) but even so, minor repairs become way more expensive because of the lack of easy access to the part swap.
The reason why Toyota cars are sitting in lots because of greedy dealers charging over msrp for them. It has nothing to do with supply chain in Canada.
Love the show, i’m from Quebec city. As far as turbos reliability it all depends on driver’s habits. Unfortunately nothing in the owner manual. I work in turbo repair/overhaul shop from cars to marine ships. Average life span without problems 6-8 yrs with poor driver habits. Also, car manufacturers don’t the build turbos. They are made by turbo manufacturers and have them sold to car manufacturers.
Greetings from Toronto, love your reviews and news about the car industry, 53 years ago I bought my first new car, a 1972 Datsun 510 two door, cheap, cheerful and a blast to drive, I even towed a camper with it. This is what is missing now an affordable, reliable, fun to drive car. An E 510 is possible if the manufacturers can agree to standard interchangeable battery packs which would help reduce costs. Keep up the good work
Hey Nestuccawood, my elderly Dad has had two non-turbo Outbacks and he pulls a small travel trailer. He’s been all over Canada and the US and the Outback has been great. The Outback handles the trailer tongue load much better than the Forester that he had before that. What I’m saying is the turbo isn’t needed. Also very comfortable on long road trips, as I’ve driven one of his Outbacks 3200 km in three days.
Good to know that if you give an honest review and the manufacturer doesn’t like it they may not give you cars in the future. I just watched that review and felt you were complimentary where you thought it deserved it and criticized it where it deserved it. It’s refreshing to get honest opinions instead of most reviewers who will only highlight positive things because they’re afraid they won’t get cars again. That’s why consumer reports buys a lot of their vehicles so they can be honest. If Rivian can’t take criticism then they probably won’t make it much longer. Thank you for giving your honest opinions! Don’t ever change.
You also have to consider that an automatic transmission is going to be better at towing compared to a CVT. CVTs are really only made for efficiency and probably wont be as reliable long term if you tow with it.
I, too want to comment on the preponderance of black interiors. I am so tired of specing a car only to discover my only option is black interior. Hello, Mazda 3, Honda Accord for example.
Over the 24 years I’ve been driving, I’ve had several turbo 4 cylinders and never had an issue with a turbo charger. I just don’t get all the fear around the technology. Like Zach said, it’s been around for a long time. Embrace the extra power and stop living in fear!
I’ve done a lot of research over the years on Irish Terriers. Thought about getting one multiple times. We ended up with a Standard Schnauzer(Mozart). We had him for 16 1/2 years. He crossed over about three years ago. Miss him tons. Great dog. I believe Golden Retrievers originated in Scotland?
Great episode, thank you, especially the EV segment. Rivian is ticked? Might as well listen to honest reviews and learn to compete. Loved the enthusiasm behind the last bit, “just run it to the ground you idiots”!!! 😂
Gee, if a slim petite person like Andrea thinks Mazda CX-50 seats aren’t comfy even for short drives, it must be bad!? I’ve test driven the CX-50 twice and didn’t really consider the seats…like it didn’t make an impact on me either way. I’ve also test driven the Suburu Outback a few times too and I would say, Yes! Those seats are nice and plush, definitely more robust.
Thinking the insurance on the EV are going to sky rock as they figure out the repair cost on them. Thinking it going to be about another 2 to 3 years before this gets all sorted out.
It's not going to sky rock lol, they are ALREADY sky rock. And not only in Canada but in US as well. Essentially higher insurance kill all fuel savings for EVs lol.
California driver here. Yes we got an eye opening sweet deal on Acura ZDX, but passed on it cuz didn't like the drive. Too big and heavy for my preference
2022-23 Mercedes EQS is going between $50-$60k. We have three EVs (Two 2023 Tesla and one 2023 Bolt EUV) that we bought on cash, and we keep our cars for a long time, so not worried about the declining prices. However, hopefully the decline will continue so that we buy our fourth EV in three years at a lower price when our son will start driving.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. Funny, drove an EV9. Very impressed. Never got down to brass tacks but they were being aggressive but would lease only. Rivian?? Couldn’t even get a test drive. I’d have to drive over 150 miles to the nearest demo center🤨 Almost $80k and a demo drive is like pulling teeth. But their lease deals are attractive right now. Thx again.
There are lots of Toyota vehicles on lots in the South of America because Toyota has loss 14.5% of their marketshare. They gouged their customers over charging. Customers have gone to Buick and Mazda were you can get a discount! Great talk thanks for entertaining me.
I decided to buy a VW Taos after waiting 6 months for a Toyota Corolla hybrid XSE, this is inexcusable from the part of Toyota Canada, btw I’m quite happy with the Taos Highline 2024 based on your reviews 😊
Making turbos for a long time, and making turbos last a long time are two different issues. There's no way the stress on a smaller engine in order to engage the turbo would be as reliable as a larger, naturally aspirated engine. Watch the mechanics on RU-vid ... they know.
I'm speaking from an European perspective where almost any car has a small engine + turbo (since 10+ years) due to emission regulations. And it's not that comman that turbo's will fail, they are pretty reliable. It's mostly all parts or software around it. And more oil consumption is a common issue with small turbo engines.
Rivian did not like your review telling me your channel is honest and almost no false positive reviews as opposed to some youtuber sponsored by manufacturers
Yeah, I saw how much money Rivian is burning through and even with VW’s $6 Billion they at best have another year. Maybe two. I ended up cancelling my Rivian R2 deposit.
I watched your Rivian R1T review and I don’t see anything too negative about it. Plus why say all positive things about it, you guys are reviewers, not influencers. I also dislike the way EV manufacturers try to eliminate buttons like they want you to get distracted more while just trying to turn on your wipers. I’ve heard that the NHTSA will now include buttons to adjust climate, etc. as part of the safety rating to prevent manufacturers from overdeleting buttons.
I actually called a few dealerships and I could get a rav4 hybrid quicker than a gas, I guess they re-allocated a few more hybrids for Canada because dealers were getting so angry at them for shipping off the Rav4 hybrids that are made here, as you say. Might be worth looking into see if that is true and just wasn't a dealer saying whatever.
As for someone living in Houston Texas, Toyota's are sitting on the lots because they want $10,000-$50,000 over sticker. $100,000 for a Toyota Tacoma TrailHunter.
What ever became of the replacement battery problems from earlier this year for Hyundai or Kia, where it costs more to replace a battery than buy a new car?
In Ireland Lexus gives a free, full and complete 7 year extension to the factory 3 year warranty, provided the owner has it serviced once a year or 20,000 miles at a Lexus dealership. Check that out...
I think the EV discounts are only happening in the US due to lower sale volumes/adoption and higher price when comparing to Canada (a good example are EV9s)
Matsuda prolly confued the U.S. watchers lol. Like "Kamala" pronounciation in U.S. is different if I recall...lol Cheers to you both from Fraser Valley, BC
I am NOT seeing any advertised discounts or incentives on any EVs in Canada. Here I am watching all of these offers in the US and we are getting nothing. Kia has leases on the EV6 and EV9 have 8% int rates on them.
@@gs98999 I guess I have to go into the dealerships to ask because I don't see any real discounts on the ID4, Q4, i4... I'm not much of a Mach E fan but I did notice the prices are lower than before. Kia and Hyundai aren't showing any discounts either.
Cars are generally not sent to Canada because it's simply more profit if sold in the US in US dollars. With the conversion it's just more money, even with discounts.
As Zack stated Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) has been manufacturing passenger vehicles in Canada since 1988. There are currently 2 Plants in Cambridge, Ontario and 1 in Woodstock, Ontario producing the Rav4,/Rav4 Hybrid, Lexus RX350/350h, Lexus NX for the North American market. The Canadian Plants are the "Most Awarded Plants for Quality in the Americas" and tied with Japan for the Most Awarded Plant Globally. TMMC has produced more than 10,000,000 vehicles since its inception. Source: Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada's website
12:18 toyota gets more money (USD) per vehicle selling in US vs Canada. Try converting grand highlander hybrid US model cost into cad. Its higher and cheaper if you buy in Canada post current market conversion
I seriously considered a Ford Lightning but the price drops and resale value kept me away. Too risky. If Ford offered a sweet lease deal I would consider.
I have to be honest, Hyundai/Kia’s hybrid just feels heavy and slow to me even the plug-in. The power from the XC90 Recharge (2023 and newer) is really impressive. The Grand Cherokee 4XE has impressive power too.
Just be proud of being Canadian and pronounce Mazda and Z the way you want. We are not Americans (well yeah, technically we ARE in North AMERICA too), and I'm sure most Americans watching realize that other countries have different pronounciations and accept it. For the other ones, well.....
I'm from Montreal and got in my Toyota dealer last week inquiring about the Crown Signia to find out they are sold out both this year and next year. But wait, I also found out they got 1 allocation this year and 3 for next year! Does this sound right to you?
Sorry Zack and Andrea but I disagree with you about Toyota stock issue in Canada. IMO it is their plan here in Canada to keep their cars prices up. In USA Toyota can't play these shady games or they might be punished by customers dearly. The way I see it: Canadians shouldn't telorate this as no car is worth waiting for a year (fancy exotic cars are a different issue for sure). I did this myself when I was looking for a new car, went to Toyota and heard their jokes about the no stock, +1 year waiting and their propsoed solution of offering me CPO cars (1 or 2 years old) with a higher price than a similar brand new model!! I was like what the hell is going on? Left the dealership and checked with another one and clearly it's the same story... Bye bye Toyota. That's the way Canadians should deal with Toyota shitty attitude in Canada! Buy from whoever is offering ready cars in lots, not in waiting list!
I am a long time multiple toyota owner. Very pissed at toyota canada for their price gouging now. Trailhunter Tacoma over 86K so last vehicle I just bought was a Silverado.
YTD numbers for car deliveries is USA sold 9.1m vs Canada 1.1m, 8.2 time bigger market but definitely not more than 10. Toyota distribution policy is a bit confusing. Regarding price of gas it includes carbon tax in Canada, hopefully after next election it would be gone and price of gas in Canada will go down.
The XC90 is one of the best looking SUVs out there and a timeless design. The Sorrento is hideous and looks all sorts of busy. It’s such a shame consumers have to consider the ugly option due to warranty concerns.
Some-- eg leasers -- people just want a new car & figure they are always going to have a car payment. Either they have way more $$ to burn or the are not worried about life 10-30 years down the road.
Furthermore, cars with no rear seat HVAC controls and/or connectivity just seems so cheap and why is it so difficult to have seat back pockets behind both front seats?
