Former President Donald Trump has proposed eliminating federal taxes on tips for service workers. Republicans in both the House and Senate introduced bills this week to do just that, but there are concerns about how such a move would play out. Ed O'Keefe reports from the campaign trail in Las Vegas.

I've waitressed for ten years and almost every payment is by credit card. It's very rare that someone pays in cash.

@@enough1494 Whatever your usual IRS tax bracket is. Since I'm low-income, its the 12% tax bracket. Many employers, including mine, also deduct an additional 6% for credit card processing fees. So, on a 15% tip, the employer takes 6% and employee gets 9%, but we still have to pay the 12% IRS tax bracket on the entire 15% tip. IOW, on a $10 tip, the employer takes $4 and the employee gets $6, and we pay $1.20 to tax. So out of $10, the employee keeps $4.80.

I can NOT tell you how well I did as a college girl serving steaks in Austin and Houston…..I won’t, it will be as shocking, as I am shocked of our antiquated tax system and corporate greed! I didn't even know taxes were taken out of tips. In all the places I've worked at, tips were just counted up at the end of each shift, and it was divided among the other workers...we didn't even write it down. If someone would have asked us if we include out tips in our taxes, we woupd have just laughed. However. That was 25 years ago, and I was working in mostly independently owned businesses and local restaurants.

In most states tip splitting is illegal now. The IRS requires you to keep a daily log of your tips. Your employer will report a prescribed percentage of sales if they don’t have a process to report actual. It’s also subject to Medicare and social security tax. It tends to be a higher rate because the employer is not paying half.

You don't get good health insurance even if you pay for it. Still have a premium, co pay, medication, pay for the Dr visit, pay more to see a specialist. And for everything else they say people make too much money so they don't qualify. Don't tax tips that way people keep more of their own money in their pockets. Raise the minimum wage and people pay more in taxes putting that extra money in the governments pockets.

@@mrfish3971 Blue states for the most part have better health insurance and accessiblitly to health care. Red states have high rates of people without health insurance. Not taxing tips is a great thing, but it's peanuts compared to health costs. And what happens when you can't work??? I lived in a blue state and was taken care of with health care and unemployment benefits. When I was living in a red state, i lived many years as a kid with no health insurance. So sorry..you will never see me vote Republican because what exactly have they really done for anybody? NOTHING!

@@readmylisp Right now, their base pay and tips are both taxed. If Trump succeeds, then only base pay will be taxed and not tips. That's less you're paying into the system, and less you get in return. Everyone thinks getting paid cash under the table is great until they find out SSA shows no income--no taxes into the system, the less you receive in SSI ad SSDI.

If tips were no longer subject to tax, they would become more like gifts rather than service charges. What obligation is there to always give a 15% to 20% tip then? If the service charge were not taxed, many customers would likely reduce or eliminate their tips, ultimately resulting in a decrease in income for service workers such as waitresses and waiters.

Taxes on tips is Wrong, a Tip is a gift for a job well done, my mother was a waitress for 32 years, and those tips help us eat when otherwise we wouldn't have... if you're stupid enough to give a $100.00 tip, then you shouldn't retaliate by forcing them to pay taxes on the gift you choose to give... A gift is a gift. NOT AN INCOME!!!

Why? It's better than raising the minimum wage. When they raise the minimum wage, it puts people in a higher tax bracket and the government collects more money.
