[Link in description] The term "superhorn" gets thrown around a little too much in my opinion, but this 60th anniversary model Schagerl Raweni in brushed gold plate? Absolutely a superhorn. I'm so excited I was able to add this to my collection, because only two were made.
I had to sell three or four other horns out of my collection to make room for this trumpet. I've always wanted a Raweni, but this isn't just any Raweni!
And it's not for sale, but we're happy to order you one like it: www.austincust...
The Raweni is a rotary valve trumpet, and the valves are structured like an old Fiske rotary cornet design in the top-action style. The top action rotary valves make it similar to the Schagerl Ganschhorn, but the leadpipe is completely different. This has a full length leadpipe, which makes it blow much more like a piston trumpet. It's also a slightly larger bore than the Ganschhorn. I love the seamless connection between the notes with the short throw rotary valves.
Mechanically, the horn is so well engineered and built. It's one of the most gorgeous horns I've ever owned, right next to my custom Coppernicus from Adams. Adams and Schagerl are two focal points of our product offerings at ACB and I'm so thankful for all they do for us. I just had to have some Schagerl bling for the shop.
This horn brings me so much joy to play. I recently lost my father who passed away a little unexpectedly. My father was an incredible engineer and a tinkerer. He helped me design my mouthpieces and helped ACB get off the ground. Losing him was quite sad, and I decided that to honor him I would purchase this Raweni because there's so much engineering amazingness in this instrument. Be it the gold plate, be it the valve action, be it the custom buttons, be it the seamless nature of the sound.
I don't think this will replace Coppernicus as my primary horn, but it has a beautiful color to the sound and if I can get used to the valves I guess that will be to be determined. I hope the shimmer this horn has gets conveyed over the microphones. It's so much fun to play.
Some purists might say that this is a rotary valve cornet due to the wrap, but it's more trumpety than you would think. It definitely has a spark and life to the sound that's different from a classic cornet vibe. But it does sound amazing with a deep cup mouthpiece as well. It's a true hybrid instrument, just like my Coppernicus is. I'll do a comparison video soon so we can explore the similarities and differences between this Raweni and my Coppernicus together. Stay tuned!
