How to Make a Kitchen Boa Scarf with Trim. When you wear this handy cloth scarf around your neck, there's no more looking all over the kitchen for something to wipe your hands on, clean the counter or use as a pot holder.
They're really easy and quick to sew and they make a wonderful gift or product to sell that will definitely be used.
You can also make them with directional fabric and also add some trim.
Use 100% cotton kitchen towels or dish cloths instead of hand towels or microfibre.
It's easier to handle without all the bulk and there is less fraying and shedding of fibres when sewing.
Make them longer for more convenience and make them shorter for kids.
If you have ten minutes, to spare, you can whip one of these up!

These do make great gifts. Pairing w a bowl cozy - why didn’t I think of that? I’ve been doing the more labor intensive double oven mitts - it’s the bias binding that slows me down so much! Your technique for the towel is SO MUCH better than what I have been doing! Thank you. I will definitely hit the like and subscribe buttons!

I just finished a “trial” boa using stash fabric and one of my towels. This is what I learned. I love your video and will definitely be making these as Christmas gifts. The finished boas looks amazing. I topstitched along the long edges of the fabric and I won’t be doing that on the gifts. It sort of bunched up my scarf along the edges. ( my bad) also, want to use flatter towels than the thicker waffle weave that I had on hand. I machine sewed the opening closed, and put in the pleat. Now to order towels and fabric! Thank you so much for these fabulous videos!

You’re very welcomed Mary. Waffle weave towels are fine if they are the lightweight kind. I do not recommend these microfibre towels. They don’t sew well and are too thick. Please have a look at my newest designs for hanging towel and a different way to sew bowl cozies. cheers!

Hi Diane, the first scarf I am using the full width of the fabric- approx 41" and the second scarf is 6" longer. You can make them any length you like. It is convenient to just use the full width of quilting cotton if you don't have directional fabric. Cheers!

The hit of Christmas! I did indeed make 11 of them--two of which I had to make towels for because I couldn't find towels in the pink I wanted. I bound the terry with the print fabric I used for the scarf part. One of these was sized down for a 3-yr old so she could match her 11yr old sister and their aprons from last Christmas. Even the guys were tickled! We had brunch, opened packages then had dinner. Nephew's wife actually used hers while fixing dinner! Dear friends of theirs joined us all for dinner and I was told what a creative genius I was. And I thank you greatly, my dear! Blessings to you.

Could you make the scarf in French terry as cotton needs ironing after washing and I don’t think my kids own an iron

Depending on your fabric, the French terry might be a bit thick. You may just have to adjust your pleats a bit to fit into the ends.
@zillypaul4343
@zillypaul4343 Год назад
Hi Angela, why do you trim the salvedge if it matches the main fabric?
@NotchesSewing
@NotchesSewing Год назад
Hi ! A selvage is the tightly woven edge of a fabric. It prevents the side edges of the fabric from unravelling or fraying. Don't use the selvage in your project because it is more densely woven and does not have the same stretch or weight as the rest of the fabric. Thanks for watching.😊 ( Of course you can use if you want to )

Thanks Janet! Fabric cut across width was 11” x 44” and longer ones along length of fabric was 11”x 27”. You can also cut things down for kids. Remember your folder towel will determine width. You should be able to just squeeze one out depending on the size of the fat quarter as they can vary slightly. Also will depend on width of the towel you use. ❤❤❤❤❤Giving you five hearts for a five-star video. Well-produced with efficient use of time and clear step-by-step directions, addition of little steps that make it look so much more professional like the decorative tape and extra top stitching. I agree with another person who said your voice is so soothing. I watched five other videos on this project before I “discovered” yours. You are my go-to gal from now on. Can’t wait to try some of your other projects. By the way I’m making some of these for our local senior care facility. These will cover them at meal time with the addition of a hook and eye on the center edges. I think they will look nothing like an adult bib, which is my goal. Also making some for myself afterwards and hopefully some Christmas presents. Thank you so much for one of the best videos I’ve watched!! I look forward to more ‼️ ❤❤❤❤❤

Out of curiosity, what brand sewing machine are you using? I have three: a Singer with a serger attachment, a Brother embroidery machine, and a 41-year-old Kenmore that just does plain sewing. I hate to admit it, but I almost always use the Kenmore. Your machine appears to have metal parts like my Kenmore. I'm considering buying another machine because my Kenmore is old, but I want one with metal parts, if possible. And by the way, the Kenmore is in tip-top condition even after making a rag bedspread for my granddaughter's twin size bed. Your advice is appreciated.

Hi have a look at this video of mine ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2T6bsn9r9xE.html. I am using the Brother S7200A. I only use the Singer domestic at the moment for buttonholes. I rarely use a domestic machine for anything else. Simple older machines are great as they are no extras that can go wrong and they were built to last! You may look into a semi- industrial? Will depend on your budget and the room you have. Best if you can go to a dealer to test out. Having a knee lift and auto thread cut is a great bonus too. Cheers!

I apologize for asking 'newbie' questions. I'm just learning to sew in my senior years. On previous projects, I have learned to prewash the material (s) and 'squaring the fabric'. Do you prewash the tea towels? Is it necessary? I've watched the hanging tea towel and am looking forward to making a set. Thank you for your input and quick response!
@NotchesSewing
@NotchesSewing 2 года назад
Hi Vickie, no need to apologize. Yes always a good idea to wash fabric and dry first. In fact I insist my clients do so before I alter any of their clothing if it is made of cotton, rayon, viscose. and linen. You can never tell how much the fabric will shrink. Because these towels are mainly for gifts, I don't like the look of that "washed" look when giving them. I do advise not to throw in dryer so it doesn't shrink like crazy.

This is the third video I have watched to see how kitchen boas are made. How long is the fabric that will hang around your neck before attaching the towel ends? If any of the videos have this information, I missed it! If anyone knows the answer please tell me!
@NotchesSewing
@NotchesSewing 2 года назад
at 3:25 I mention that the width of your fabric will be the length before attaching the towel ends, and at 8:05 give the total length including the towel. Fabrics come in different widths and you also have the option to cut out along the length of fabric to make longer . Place a measuring tape around your neck to figure how you would like the boa to fit you before deciding how to cut out your fabric. ( may need to shorten if making kids boa) Thanks for watching!😊
