Good one! Pretty much how I do it. My last step is to spray diluted light oil with that thinner. I may only use my gun a couple of times a year and the oil stops that "sticky trigger" after sitting for a while.

Great tutorial Jerry!! I've never seen it done before. Never thought to pull the trigger to keep the needle from rubbing or setting the needle to wide open during re-assembly. I like to clean the cup and get thinner through the gun right after spraying, loosen the aircap, cover with a rag and spray into the rag so it bubbles back into the cup. Then remove the aircap and give the needle and cap a quick wipe before heading out into clean air. Seems to help a lot when it's time to really clean it. Feel free to "school me" if any of this is wrong. Hope you're enjoying the summer weather! Larry
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
You're method sounds good - my dad used to run his finger back and forth over the air cap to sort of back flush the pickup tube - I also did it for years but stopped because I read or heard somewhere that it can force paint/etc. in places that it shouldn't be. I can't find anything on that now and not sure where I heard/read it but it's something to think about. Other than that - if your gun sprays fine after how you clean it, your doing it right. Hope you're having a great summer to my friend :)

Honestly one of the best autobody RU-vid content channels! Before I go I have a question. Any possible chance you can do a video on what to do when your car is peeling or flaking big pieces of paint. My car looks like a spotted cheeta. Im not sure if its a defect in the white paint. But now its exposing the primer or sealer under it. And dont know what to do. Someone told me take a putty knife and go all over the car taking all the paint of thats peeling. Then sand it, primer it, seal it and shoot it with paint. Anyways any input appreciated.Keep up the great work rolling Lakeside.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
Thanks EZ - I appreciate the support. You could use the putty knife or skip that step and go right to the DA sander. Start with 120 and if that doesn't feather edge the different layers fast enough then you can even use 80 first. The idea is to remove the damaged paint or clear coat - what ever is flaking, feather edge or smooth everything out, prime it, block sand it where the different thicknesses where or block the whole car/truck, prime again, finish sand, seal and paint - you can skip the sealer if you want. Hope that helps a bit if not ask more ?s. I'll try to find a video that might help with that. Have a good week end my friend - Jerry

A Shur-Shot sprayer works great too. You pull the trigger on the gun and then the trigger on the Shur-Shot and the spray comes out of the nozzle in a strong stream. Also, the power of the Shur-Shot does great at cleaning both the spray gun and the aircap. Wipe with a microfiber towel from Costco and you're good to go after lubricating the needle with spray gun lube.

Lacquer thinner is the cleaner of choice when it comes to neglected guns - at least it was at the shops I worked at. Maybe acetone works too but I believe lacquer thinner is the strongest of all the thinners and/or reducers :)

@@LakesideAutobody So far so good. I have run into a few problems. The spray gun was "surging" on my second base coat. I figured out that it was the strainer/filter between the cup and the gun, so I removed it, and the third coat sprayed out beautifly... Except for the cap leaking (stupid Campbell Hausfeld). Oh, that and a four inch long hose drag which was totally my fault. Anyway, I sanded out the drips, I had one run to sand out, and I fixed the hose drag. I scuffed with a red pad, tack clothed, and sprayed a tack coat of base. Waited 15 then a medium coat that I just finished. So we'll see how it goes from here. Oh, and yes, I am having a blast! Thanks for your help!

Final report: Two coats of clear later, and I am actually pretty impressed. I think I did about as well as anyone could, painting under a 10x10 canopy in my back yard! In a week or two I'll cut and buff it, and it should look even better! There are a few fisheyes, and a couple of bits of trash in it, but it came out remarkable clean considering the environment I had to work in. And for it being the first car painting I have ever done, lol!

OK, now that I have had a taste of painting, I'm thinking about something a little more ambitious. Overall my truck looks pretty good, but it has been a couple of years since I buffed out scratches, and I've picked up a chip or two that I want to fix. I can fix the chips easily enough, but can I spray a new coat of clear over the existing clear coat? I imagine I would need to scuff the original paint to 800 or so first, right? Is this done by body shops, or is it a waste of time?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
Yes body shops do that and you have the right procedure in mind. You won't be able to see the sand scratches - if worried use 1500 or finer.

He provides a great overall process, however the order of operations is incorrect IMHO. The needle should be pulled first. Leaving it in increases the chances of damaging the tip as you take off the air caps and put them back on. I always do the take off/put on in this order: pull needle, remove air caps, remove cup to soak upper and lower threads more easily, put cups back on, put air caps back on, lastly put needle back in (with oil but about 1-1.5” back from tip. Don’t put at the tip!). I spray a lot and clean gun probably 3-5x a day.
@LakesideAutobody

If you pull the trigger back a bit you'll protect both the needle & nozzle. Like you said though, it's good to make sure those parts stay in good condition. Thanks for the comment my friend and have a good weekend :)

In speaking about spray guns. What is the difference between HTE and HVLP? Do they spray alot different from each other? What do you think about the Black Widow HTE spray gun by spectrum?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
Simply put HTE is the latest technology for getting the most paint on a vehicle with the least amount of waste/overspray/air pressure/etc. HVLP and conventional guns are considered "old fashioned" I have the Spectrum HVLP gun from HF and it sprays really well but I don't have the HTE gun from BW. I don't think you will be disappointed by purchasing either of the HTE or HVLP Black Widows and they will both spray very nicely. The only difference you may notice is how much air one uses as compared to the other. The HVLP gun will use more air volume IOW you will need a bigger compressor for large jobs :)

After the last step where you sprayed the thinner through the gun do you need to wait to use the gun again?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
No. There really is nothing or no paint, primer, clear or sealer that reacts negatively to lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner cuts/cleans everything and doesn't curdle, gum up, etc. If you are concerned just let some air blow through the gun for a few seconds before using again :)
