Quick, sturdy, elegant, easy-to-build drawers.
Sometimes drawer-making can be intimidating... especially when using drawer slides. The fit just has to be perfect. There are dozens (maybe hundreds) of ways to make drawers. In this video we look at the drawer lock router bit method and show tips for making perfect drawers quickly and easily.

What a great teacher. People joke about it being long and slow, but when you’re making videos for beginners those details really help. I’m a few years in to the hobby now, but I still reference his videos from time to time.

This is great, there is reality on here. Not like other shows where you know they have done stuff prior to make sure they got it correct, like if they get it the first time, everytime.

Great common sense instructions. One caveat - if you are working from a bench make sure it is dead level. Otherwise your 'leveling' process will not be level to the world.

Nice job teaching how to make a drawer box using a drawer lock bit. Concise, to the point with no rambling ! I like using the prefinished plywood for the sides and melamine bottoms, so there's' no finishing involved !

I got a drawer lock bit in a set I bought some time ago and I had a go at using it for the first time last week. Without any real instructions it took me a while to figure it out and set it up....but I ended up with great results and I can see me using this a lot from now on.

I liked the video because it was educational, but the router bit and the extra fancy joint it makes is a solution to a non-problem. Infact the solution is a step backwards in comparison to the very first flipped rabbet joint you showed. Using the first joint, the entire drawer can be done using a table saw. Although I don't care for the bit, the video was great.
@stevewhitsett7744

the locking rabbet can be done on the table saw too if you prefer.... it just requires a bit more fuss....

1964 till 2015 means that drawer is still working 51 years later. That's pretty impressive for a simple glued and nailed drawer front. Seems to me the front gets more stress than the rear. Thanks for making this simple...

Now, after getting my bit and giving it a try, I had a LOT of trouble getting this thing set up. I still don't have it perfect. When I set that bit like you suggested and router both ends, they are nowhere near fitting together. I am a beginner wood worker so this my not be an issue for most people. Is there any way you could do a video just on this joint? Meaning, explain how to make adjustments based on how the joint is fitting together.

Hi Steve. I'm loving your videos as a new subscriber. Particularly your design of drawers. I want to try the joint for some larger pantry drawers that will be roughly 2 ft square and higher. Would you recommend staying with the same size lumber. Thanks very much.
@downtoearthwoodworks
@downtoearthwoodworks 6 лет назад
Hi Richard, thanks for watching. I don't see any reason you couldn't use the same size material. I've made drawers that were almost 4 feet wide using this method and they were fine.
@richardmorris112
@richardmorris112 6 лет назад
Thanks Steve. My concern was for the 1/4" bottom and whether it would carry the weight of a drawer full of cans or bottles, for example, over a two feet stretch. Can I press you on the question of the drawer bottom being adequate?
@downtoearthwoodworks
@downtoearthwoodworks 6 лет назад
Richard, I'm sorry, I did understand that you were referring to the bottom. If you are going to put heavy bottles and cans in a larger drawer, you will definitely want to up the size of the bottom, perhaps to 1/2" material. You could also put a couple of thin braces side-to-side under the bottom of the drawer. Install those into notches in either side and glue them in... they will help!

Great instructional video. Which router bit did you use to create the locking profile?
@MCP1BEME
@MCP1BEME 7 лет назад
Very Nice and informative. The way I was shown to do a drawer bottom was "not" to glue it. I was told that it needs room to expand and contract. Do you glue all of your drawer bottoms? Have you ever heard of "not" gluing the bottoms in?

Great Video! very well done and specific. I think routers are a great option when on a budget. I was wondering if there's a way to do the grooves for the bottom of the drawer with the router as well. what type of bit should be used? Newbie here!
@downtoearthwoodworks
@downtoearthwoodworks 8 лет назад
+Lila Epperson Absolutely... a straight bit will work... either get one sized properly or get one a little undersize and make two passes. I like to use what is called a "spiral uncut bit."

I'm curious why you use the table saw for cutting the recess for the drawer bottom. Are router bits not a tight enough fit? New guy here... Thanks for the right amt of information at the right pace!
@downtoearthwoodworks
@downtoearthwoodworks 6 лет назад
Hi, thanks for watching. You certainly could cut the groove for the drawer bottom at the router table, and getting the perfect fit would simply be a matter of getting the right bit size or using a slightly smaller bit and making a couple of passes... "sneaking up" on the right fit. However, for a drawer bottom, the table saw is just a faster and easier way to make a groove.

some builders say you shouldn't glue the drawer bottom in the groove due to expansion and contraction. What is your advice on that?
@downtoearthwoodworks
@downtoearthwoodworks 7 лет назад
If you use a solid wood bottom, that is definitely a consideration. With solid wood I never glue in the bottoms, but use the little rubber-like "space balls" to keep the drawer bottom from "rattling." If you use plywood, it will be okay to use glue.

You can consult the supplier's information. Most of these bits allow a slight range but they are usually optimized for 1/2" and if you do some digging, sometimes other sizes.

Coplanar means "in the same plane" thus it has meaning only for elements contained in a plane like lines or dots. Don't use it when you mean parallel (planes or drawer sides). Parallel can be used for planes too. Two planes cannot be coplanar because they are the same plane.

The one thing I've been noticing in woodworking videos lately is the incorrect use of the word "coplaner". Coplaner means in the same plane. 2 drawer sides are not coplaner, they're in parallel planes. Just an observation
