Can’t find Gelatos near you!? I found some great alternatives!!! Check out my video here to learn more! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BNr5WqyxuWM.html
I wish my faces looked anything NEAR your "split second" faces 😅... I would be SO HAPPYYYYYYYYY! 😂 Your sketching, drawing, painting art style is truly impressive. Watching you sketch out those four faces was fascinating, and I can literally say that today - In All My Many Years Of My Long Life - is the FIRST TIME I "GET" facial proportion (and poses). It's almost like you set off a switch in me or something!! 😮 ... it's like, "OH! I GET IT NOW!" 😅😂 Thanks soooo much for that! It doesn't matter that I've read books on portraits and sketching or watched countless vids on "how to draw". Today, I finally Got A Clue! 😂 Thank you for handing me that vowel that filled in the blanks in my head. Awesome! ❤😊
I hit an art-block illustrating my children's books, but now that I have watched several of your videos, I am SOOO inspired & have the confidence to jump in there & get my projects done. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent!
Thanks for showing me what I’m suppose to me doing with them. We (husband) were on vacation stop in small town. Had one store for everything great art supplies and these gelatos were in a clearance basket. Had no idea what or how to use them but loved the colors came home but them in a basket 🙂. Thanks for a great video my first time watching yours will be watching more.
I love using gelatos for faces / skin tones. I started using them when I first starting doing art and have never stopped using them. Gelatos and gesso work together for such smooth blendable outcomes.
Wow. I LOVE your choice of color style! Vibrant, lively colors on beautiful, playful pictures. SO gorgeous!! I'm new to your channel, and not an artist. Just stumbled on your channel trying to figure out what to do with my gold & silver colored Gelatos that I bought for my acrylic stamps (Gelatos don't seem to work too well for stamping). Anyway, I digress. Love your art style & great instruction videos too.
I started using my Gelatos more lately and have a new appreciation for them. They are so versatile and beautiful, and very enjoyable to use. I did an abstract layered gradation in greens with a bit of tan, and I’m here to tell you, I couldn’t have done much better with any other medium than what I did with Gelatos. And because they’re a solid, I was able to push down a little harder with some short circular strokes and create some gorgeous texture. (I plan to use this in digital reproduction.) If Faber-Castell would ever decide to make a professional version of Gelatos (still keeping this arts/crafts version) with lightfast rated pigments, (of course the price would shoot up a bunch) Gelatos would become a force to be reckoned with in the color medium art world.
Thank you!! I always walk away with new wrinkles on my brain after watching you! I have lots of Gelatos and have only ever used them on florals. I will def give them a try on some faces! The effects are so soft but pack a big punch. Just lovely! Thank you, Karen 💗 Love, love your channel (and your books!! 😁) Bless xo
I just stumbled across your videos, what a happy trip! Are your cheat sheets still available? Would like the HAMBURGER sheet and the one to draw faces. I used to draw all the time so long ago, I can hardly remember what I used to know. Age has made my mind a little less reliable and my fingers stiff. But you are so buoyant and upbeat and encouraging, I would like to revisit. Your artwork is beautiful and inspiring and I am eager to try my hand again, but not do foolish to think I don't need some help. If your cheat sheets are still available, I would appreciate the help! Your beautiful spirit comes thru every piece I've seen and your encouragement is inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing!
This was super helpful! I’ve been wanting to get these, but I’m thankful you stayed that about the metallics, because I was originally only going to get those. Now to do your process, I’m thankful you informed us that the Metallics of these won’t work with this process. So now, I will get the mattes plus metallics, as I want to use the metallics for my backgrounds in my coloring books. Thank you for always doing wonderful demos and all your explanations. 🙏🏻
@@KarenCampbellArtist you’re most welcome! I just did my very first sketch of my life using one of ur tutorial vids (well two, one is a face drawing one, the other a shading part 2 step for it). I’ll post it to my Instagram. I’m not understanding quite how to “tag” in it. Is there a way to tag u on Insta, that you can instruct me how, so u are given proper credit? I hope this is okay to ask, if not, my apologies. 🙏🏻😊
Hello from South Africa. Loved this technique. Something different and I can apply to my art work. I use wet wipes to soften my botanicals. Detol wipes.🇿🇦💅🖌
Can you put this in writing and email to magicalsuggestionbox@gmail.com. That’s how I stay organized with all the wonderful ideas people send in. Then when I have a gap that I need to fill in I have a whole list curated for me!!
I'm wanting to start an art journal. I'm new to multi media but fascinated by it and have been binge-watching your channel to stuff all the info into my brain. I'm going to start with a version of your cereal box journal and try to do it with what I have on hand. Question: Could you use water-soluble pastels in the same way as you use gelatos? Thanks.
Oh I just realized in signed in my from other Channel. Sorry! It’s still me tho ❤️ It depends on what you mean my water soluble pastel! If you mean anything oil based then no. There are a lot of similar products that i mention in this vid (marabu and distress) that are fine to substitute and lots of similar products that I haven’t tested personally so I actually can’t say for sure but you if you already have these in hand then I say try it!!!
Howdy, just subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your vids. This was fun to watch. I have a few 'original' gelatos and this is a great tip. Thanks for sharing. P.S. Ran across the most adorable ostrich - I see now it was your work. Hello ! Just saw more paintings - gorgeous work. I would hang on my wall for sure. Woman smoking, Day of the Dead, that Horse -- love love love
What a great idea Karen, thank you! I often use Neocolors for shading but Gelatos are so much softer, so why did'nt I think of that! I use my Gelatos also as sprays. I mix a little grated Gelatos with some water, and keep all my colors in mini misters. Great video, thanks!
Being a long time Awesome Art School student I can say that this lady is great in all aspects. Wonderful teacher that shares her talent. She has many books on Amazon and the one that I will pitch here is "How to draw and Find your style". Check it out. It's really great hearing her thoughts on Gelatos!!!! Thank you KAREN!!
AWESOME Karen! TY. By the way, what black pen did you use to draw the faces on top of the paint? Can you ruin pens/markers when drawing staight on paint? I'd love to know what brand of pen you used! Thanks so much for all you do!!
That’s this! Pentel Pocket Brush Pen amzn.to/2JuVpmU You can draw on acrylics but just be careful! The paint has to be 1000% Dry. I do love to seal my acrylics first (like with Mod Podge) and then draw on top with Pitt pens and Posca Pens. You can learn more in Episode 7 of this series! Http://bit.ly/hamburgerseries
@@KarenCampbellArtist thank you so much!!!! So happy you responded!!! I'm ordering the pen now and I've been a member of both classes for some time now. So I understand the "hamburger". I guess the video confused me just a smidge and I was very curious about the pen so thank you very much!!!!!!
I’d love to know what craft paint colors you’re using for the skin bases? Thanks so much for showing us this technique. I’ve been feeling a little lost/block lately and it’s given me a little boost to try something new. How did I go this long not finding your channel? Subscribed faster than lightening lol. Have a good weekend
Aw thank you!!! I literally just grab ones that look like skin colors when I’m in the store! Lol! Americana has TONS! Good ones are Santa’s Flesh, Sand, Honey Brown, Fleshtone, Latte and Ivory! Have fun!! ❤️❤️❤️
From a Campbell to a Campbell.. 😬❤️ I’ve had gelatos for years never known what to do with them either… wondering what kind of black pen you used that’s stood up through the water and gelatos.. Can you use gelatos over acrylics? Over canvas prints for embellishments? If so what do you use for sealer? Just simple acrylic sealer spray? Can they stay over magazine paper? I am a mixed media person just trying to finally sell for the first time(soon)I had a lot of mid grade canvas prints done of some old work two years ago and they’ve just been sitting in a closet I want to embellish them add either acrylic or medium on top.. I’ve been stuck for two years and very nervous to ruin them.. but it’s time to jump… art therapy my life head on.. 👍❤️🎨 I would love to use gelatos and texture mediums and know what to use over canvas prints and what sealant to put on top finally.. I have no art friends but my heart is fully there. 🎨❤️
Hi there! If you watch the end of the video it shows you exactly how I use them in my mixed media projects and how and what I use to seal them with too. The pen is my pocket pentel brush pen but I don’t use water at all with my gelatos as you can see with the vid, just my dry fingers! Watch the last few minutes for deets and you can also check out this series for my whole process: bit.ly/hamburgerseries
What are you using for the sharpie all the ones I saw today said they were oil based. Would you use that? Someone sold me those gelato glad to know how to use it but it never dries.
This has gotta be one of my top of the list tutorials 😊! My Gelatos have turned hard & crumbly 😟.... Any ideas to revive them so that they’re creamy & easy to rub with my fingers please??? I just think they’re such a waste of money if I can’t use them... Thanks for any help!!!
Oh geez, that’s not good! How long have you had them? I’ve had mine for years! Ummmmm....I think I would take the cap off and take my hair dryer and heat the nib up a bit and see if that would maybe slightly melt the ingredients together, then rub them with my fingers so see if you can get the pigment to bind better together. Let me know if that at all works! No clue but that’s what I’d try!
@@KarenCampbellArtist does humidity affect how fast the gelatos dry up? I live in southern Alberta which is very dry. When I blend gelatos, I have to dip my fingers in a little of water to blend them better. And a little goes a long way!
@@mayloo2137 I wouldn’t be surprised! That’s sounds very likely! I’m in the south (U.S.) where it’s always humid which is probably why I don’t have that problem, interesting!! And thanks for the tip, I’m sure that will help others!
I haven't been able to find my creative bug lately and it's depressing. Guess what? My bug is at your house! I found her! Thanks for your videos. Love your channel. BTW, saw a thing about a hamburger cheat sheet, can I have one? Again, thanks for your channel and for holding my creative bug for me.
Yay, I'm so glad you found your bug! I was keeping it company! Thanks for watching, Jennifer, I hope you get back to creating super soon! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/
I like permanent materials so I shade with acrylic paint or Faber castell pitt artist brush pens. But I have a favorite crayon and that is Primas water soluble oil pastels. Permanent when dry. Unfortunately they do not come in many shades.
Hi! Thanks so much for watching, Michelle! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/ Here's the drawing bundle, enjoy: awesomeartschool.lpages.co/drawing-face-cheatsheet-bundle/ Please note 2 things with the bundle link, 1) There can be an up to 5 minute delay for the email to come through that delivers your cheatsheets. If you want to search your inbox folders for it, look for an email from karen@awesomeartschool.com 2) After you DO find your email and you click on the links, the cheatsheets DO NOT OPEN, rather, they download immediately to your devices download folder. I hope that helps with any confusion! Good luck and HAVE FUN!
Are you doing your project on canvas? Paper? I tried the technique on watercolor paper and it didn’t work, it looks bumpy because of the paper texture 😕
@@diannewalker170 oh sorry! I thought that’s what you meant! Skin tone paints are shades of beige and brown. And the name varies by brand (which isn’t very helpful). But literally any earth tone can work as a skin tone! Beige, Ivory, umbers, etc
@@KarenCampbellArtist Thank you...thank you...I will definitely be doing some research on colors. I love your videos. About to be late for work while Im watching, bur I am mesmorized...😂 thank you for responding!
Thank you for this! I got the set u had a link for in the speak easy video and was wanting to know diff ways to use them . Do u use them over your watercolor portraits the same way ? Is Mod Podge Matte Sealer, Glue & Finish: All-in-One this the sealer you use to fix the mod podge in place to keep from smearing ? Could u just use a gloss medium or does it have to be a varnish and once u add that layer can u add more layers on top ? Sorry I know that’s a lot of questions but I really like to know I’m using them properly so they last . Thank you thank you .
It may be easier for me to explain by providing you with the Hamburger Cheatsheet! It will provide all the answers you are looking for and may come up with layering with different supplies! Please let me know if you have any other questions! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger
Which type mod podgr do you use for sealing; matte or gloss? Also, do you have any trouble with the Pitt pens after writing on top of the sealer? Do they dry up or are still wet for your next project? I found my sharpie markers dry up after writing on acrylic surfaces. The acrylic seals the marker making them useless after that. 😢
Hey Christina! I use both but usually Matte. I have absolutely no problem writing on the surface with the Pitt Pens, that’s my go to technique and gives me awesome results every time - but I definitely need to make sure the sealed layer is 100% dry before writing on it. You can check out video #7 in this series that shows you my exact process for using the pens over Mod Podge. I hope this helps! Http://bit.ly/hamburgerseries
Hi, Karen! I have a question: do you recommend using oil pastel pens on your hamburger system? I was thinking if the pens would work good with mod podge. etc. Muito obrigada!
Great question! Oil based products are not a mix in the burger because they aren’t compatible with watersoluble or water based products unless they are the very LAST layer on top. But once you use an oil based product you can’t put anything over it. Great question!!!!
Great question! They are different in quite a few ways. First, I’d consider Neo Color IIs to be a very fine art product, lightfast and SUPER water reactive. That being said, due to their compact crayon consistency you can’t scribble them down and blend them with your finger the way that you can with Gelatos. They are more like pure watercolors in stick form. Whereas Gelatos I’d consider a craft product, cheaper and not as lightfast and also not as water reactive. They come off easily onto your paper and easily blend with your finger (where as Neo Color IIs need water to blend and dissolve). I hope that helps!
Yep, the Pastel set has the most common Caucasian ones in it I think! You can check out the packs here (see under mixed media essentials) www.Amazon.com/shop/karencampbellartist
Ooh but these are oil based so you can’t use them under sealers, etc. just be careful with oil based products, they must go on the last last layer only and not layered under or among a lot of other water based mixed media supplies, mediums and sealers (as in demoing here). And they’re also not watersoluble so they’re quite a different product! A fun one yes! But I just want to make the distinction that they would not be used the same way ❤️
Oh, FYI - I loved you in your video too! Maggie was just the star is all. lLOL Truly, I've been dying to learn about these mystery gelatos, so thanks for explaining why they rock ! um Maybe you should make your own line girl!
They are supposed to be the same kind of product. I have a bunch of Gelatos, before King Art made those products. Those King art sticks come in such a variety of colors, and with a great price. I have never used them, but I am oh so curious!
