Nicole, I live in the country and the Deer use to eat everything I planted until I put an ELECTRIC fence around my garden. It's less expensive than paying for all those flowers and time you have put into it. The Deer don't even come close to the fence, I think they can hear the electric going through the fence. Good lucky with the flowers that are left. Faye

Hey Nicole, it's Brenda with Native Roots Salsa Company and Four Dogs Flower Farm. I watch you all the time and love your videos. You inspired me to start my flower farm journey back in December. I am not the originator of this idea and can't remember where I saw it, but I put a chicken wire ball in my harvest bucket for snaps and it allowed me to harvest them and keep them straight. I don't harvest nearly as much as you do, but it might be a solution.

I have an odd suggestion for the deer. I’ve found that the deer feed in my garden at dawn. The only thing that seems to work is going out to pick at dawn. They avoid me like the plague. I’m hoping that they will just forget about my flowers after awhile.🤷‍♀️. Good luck!🌸

I wanted to say thanks for sharing a video - I needed to see one today for extra motivation. My flowers are starting to pop and I don’t know exactly what to do with them. Watching your videos inspired me to start my flower farm- I’m in southern Maine. Thanks for all the knowledge you share! I look forward to more videos!!!

Between the deer, groundhog, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and insects, it’s a tough season. I’m thankful we’re at least getting more rain than we did the past couple of summers. But those pests are no joke! Everyone is offering their deer advice and I can say that sprays help, but need to be applied regularly. I make my own to save money. I’ve also heard that a double fence, with a gap in between (look up the specs) works well because the deer realize they can’t land between them and they aren’t sure they can clear them both. That’s all I got!
@amyporter6554

Regarding the deer, if you don’t want to go the electric route, what about planting a border of the plants that they go for on the outside of the fence? They may just go for those and not even try to get in the fence. Actually you could even plant a inner border of strong smelling herbs that they don’t like (examples which are also perennials: wild bergamot bee balm, agastache, mint, chives, salvia, rosemary, lavender) so that that’s all they smell if they do make it to the fence. Thanks for the update, the flowers look beautiful!
@majoyap3403

Nicole, as other suggest why not put an electric fence, but put a patch of plants as food for the deer outside the fence. That way, the deer are not too oogling on your crops, but also they have something to eat 😊

My nemesis are the rabbits this year. It's so disheartening to see beautiful seedlings that we planted out in the Spring (all started from seed) reduced to nubs in the ground when we should be harvesting the flowers right now. My zinnias took the hardest hit. Really sorry about your deer problem. Hopefully our plants will bounce back...for now I'm calling it "extreme" pinching. Good Luck!

I am sure I mentioned before that I accidentally found the deer freak when they step on small 1 foot x 1 foot pieces of chicken wire. Not saying this makes mowing easy because the chicken wire (or cattle panel) needs to be picked up at mowing time. The good news is when the chicken wire is strewn again it ends up in different spots, which fools the deer again if they reappear. Cheap fix- works great God bless

Nicole, Nicole, Nicole…Electric fence yes. 2 fence system. Interior fence has 3 electric lines, one at 18”, one at 36”, and one at 54 inches above the ground. The exterior fence needs to be 36” from the interior fence. The exterior fence is just one electric line that is 18” from the ground. I have run this system for 3 years now and no deer in my garden. I have an opening on one side where I can enter and exit the garden. In that space I put in a homemade tomato cage that is about 50” tall..blocks the entry and so far they have not found it as an entry point. Must keep grass trimmed around the fence of course. Inexpensive fix. Has worked fantastic for me! Much love to you and your family. Jenny

We put out some solar motion lights to spook the deer and stop them from eating our garden in the fields. They don’t come right around the house but our fields are vulnerable but the motion lights have worked amazingly. Being solar you can just stick in the ground then pick them up and move them around.

@flowerhillfarm … I have been dealing with deer this summer … and I forgot my old trick of putting a radio out in the garden. I used to tuned it to an AM talk station, but this year the AM station that its tuned in on has music too … the radio has been out there for 3 or more weeks and the deer damage has completely stopped and the plants are recovering. Instant cure, but then there’s a cord to unplug and plug back in when we’re mowing, but totally worth it for me!

True and tested deer protection for my garden. Deer will not jump a fence that they can not clear. 2 ways to do that. 1) You can place a double fence 4' apart. or 2) what I do. I place my straw bales and elevated raised beds 2' away from the cattle panel fence that's only 4' tall. I have video of the deer walking by the garden to the back yard to munch on the crab apple because they can't clear my 4' fence to much on my garden.
@tannenbaumgirl3100
@tannenbaumgirl3100 Год назад
You need to bait the electric wire with peanut butter, then make it live...once they get zapped, they will never come back to the fence, touch it, or jump over it. Another option is to make another fence, 3 ft. away from the big fence, like a moat. The won't jump both fences out of fear of getting stuck inbetween the two. My fence is only 3 ft. tall, and the deer, ground hog and rabbits raided my vegetable and flower garden every year to the ground, I installed a Solar Gallagher S20 with two strands of wire....one 6 inches above ground for ground hogs, rabbits and raccoons, the 2nd strand at a little above 30 inches. I built a high framed gate with the strands that go up and around so I can walk thru, and then installed 2x hand clamps to connect the wires across the gate when I'm not in the garden. You would think a 30 inch or so fence would not work, but no deer, raccoons, rabbits or ground hogs have been inside for 4 years! Remember, bait the live fence with peanut butter on alu-foil wrapped around the wire(s)....it worked for me, and we have a lot of deer every evening and during the night....they will not touch it anymore, jump or even get close once they got zapped. The setup is portable with 1/2" fiberglass spikes, so when I need to come inside with the tractor, I just need to pull two spikes out, I can come with the mower thru the 2x hand gates.

I've found planting basil keeps deer away. I specifically planted cinnamon basil this year. I'm thinking any basil would work. I'm pretty sure this is called companion planting to deter pest! It's worked so far. I've also heard they get scared easily of movement and noise, so motion sensor lights or water sprinklers, or even those things that twirl in the wind could help keep them off.

Believe it or not, a 3 foot wire will deter deer. Maybe our Delaware deer are not as tough as their New York neighbors, but it is a relatively inexpensive trial. Are you able to get some tall t posts and string a row of electric wire above your deer fence ? I believe that they have solar powered ones now? 🌸💚🙃
