quick guide to agility train a mouse

This is the way I agility train my male Multimammate Mice ( = "African Soft-Furred Rats").
When they heard another mouse being clicker trained, they would get aggressive and attack him. That's why for them I prefer luring, it doesn't upset the others so much.
But of course this simple method also works for other species.

Hi! Are you getting just one multi? They cannot live alone and need large groups of at least 5 individuals. So please consider getting more than just one! It's much more fun to watch them cuddle and groom each other instead of a sad and lonely one. :-)

A good way to teach a mouse to go through the tube is to get a spoon or stick and put a treat on it, and then lure them through the tube to the otherside

Hi! First you should find out if your mouse is stressed (refusing treats is often a sign of it). E.g., being cut off from his home cage (and from his companions, in case he has some) can be very stressful for a mouse. And being easily distracted is totally normal for them. When they are new to training, some of mine can only focus for a few seconds! So you should be patient and keep the training sessions very short. But it's usually easier to train them inside their cage, have you tried this?
@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 лет назад
In this case I give them wafer paper (unsugared/-flavored) and you can get it at stores with baking supplies.
@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 лет назад
Yes, this species has extremely powerful jaws and sharp teeth, their bites can be quite harmful. But in this case it was just a nip. Most of my mice are self-bred and some are from the animal sanctuary.

@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 лет назад
It totally depends on what you expect from your pets. Rats bond with you and enjoy being petted, mice are pets to observe rather than handle and are much harder to tame. Both species can't really be potty-trained and both have a smell. And both species must live in groups. A difference is that male rats can live together and male mice must be neutered, otherwise they would kill each other. And keeping them alone is no option.

Hi! Thanks for your video! :-) Good to see that your mouse already trusts you enough to take treats. But your cage is already too small for one mouse and she should get some companions, so you need a much bigger one. I already sent you a site some time ago where you can see how a mouse cage should look like and how to build one. Please take a look at it again.

I have a wild house mouse that I found when he was possibly 3-4 weeks old. He was very curious and I taught him to eat from my hand and also to lick peanut butter from my fingers. He's getting really comfortable about hands now. It took a while for him to trust but now he comes when I call him and loves to visit me.
@dancepiglover
@dancepiglover 8 месяцев назад
I know this is a 10 year old post, but for future reference, peanut butter can pose a choking hazard for small animals because it is so sticky. They love it, but it’s risky. Some will water down peanut butter to make it a thinner consistency.

Don't worry they are not being forced to do anything. It's the same as teaching your dog to sit and stay they want to do it because its fun and they get treats :). Trust me they wouldn't do it if they didn't want to :).

When it came to the nipping of your finger, that likely was mistaken identity. The white bandage looked similar to the white treat. Also, my rats always bite my band aids.

Absolutely nothing can replace companions for such highly social animals. Just google for isolation stress in mice, it has lots of negative effects. For fancy mice, the minimum group size for females and neutered males is 4 individuals, 5 for multimammate mice (the ones in this video) and gerbils should only be kept in pairs because larger groups tend to be unstable. So if you want to get just one rodent, a solitary one like a hamster would be the better choice.

i had a pet mouse, a white red eye one usually feed to snakes,never thought about training it. one time a let a bunch of little kids play with, they harassed the poor thing so bad i put it back in its cage but one of them convinced me to take out real quick and, while trying to grab it, I cornered him and he bit me. my finger swelled up to the size of my thumb and throbbed for days

@MouseAgility

You can't potty train mice. But this can also be a sign of stress. And four mice are the minimum group size to start with, they live in groups, not in pairs.
@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 лет назад
Hi! :-)

Although not the smartest, I find that fancy mice are the easiest. Multimammates are very intelligent, but have difficult personalities and are very stubborn. The most intelligent are spiny mice, and they are crazy about learning. But their speed and agility makes the timing quite difficult, and some of mine bite.

@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 лет назад
They are much friendlier towards each other inside their cage, but outside clickertraining often leads to aggression. I prefer aggressive lines, so most of my new ones have enough self-esteem to take treats right away. But non-aggressive lines may take a little longer.
@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 лет назад
Are you sure he is already tame enough? And have you tried a spoon? Many mice who refuse treats from the hand will take them from a long spoon. The treats themselves are less important than most people think, mine would even work for food they can have for free.
@TadaGanIarracht
@TadaGanIarracht 11 лет назад
This is a great tutorial video. Is clicker training even more effective? I imagine you could probably teach/manipulate more complicated behaviours with a clicker.

Male multimammates can be quite difficult and unpredictable, even to me as a very experienced keeper. It's important to find a strong alpha male that keeps the group together, and it's essential that they learn social behavior from adult males (they are often weaned much too early). And the group size shouldn't be too large for males, 4 are enough. The more the easier it can get unstable. Currently I keep a group of 6 males and one hermaphrodite(!), but they have a great social behavior.
