If you have tension problems, can you show us how to fix them. I get confused about turning the tension dials up or down to loosen or tighten tension. Can you do a video on this with home sewing machine? BTW, you have the best videos on sewing/tailoring I’ve ever seen. Great production value. Makes me want to go into my sewing room and sew, sew, sew. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

The best rule to live by is just ‘lefty loosey righty tighty’ on the tension dial and I will only adjust a quarter turn at a time and then test before turning again. If you see loops on the upper side of the fabric facing you, you want to loosen the tension, if you see loops on the under side (not facing you while sewing) you want to loosen the tension dial. Yes, it can be more complicated than that but this will get you there 80% of the time!

@@sewshowwithshaeYou said loosen the second time when you meant tighten the top thread

@@sewshowwithshae Don't you mean tighten the tension when you see loops on under side?

You're the best guide on sewing. Your clips are awesome! on this subject it would be good to explain why at all we need to adjust the tension, what is the tension for each fabric type, how does it look when it is too tight, or too lose, does a needle type influence the tension, does a foot influece it (eg zipper foot vs. regular one). Thanks!

I am totally new to this, but I feel like a problem I had was that as the bobbin gets down to maybe a 1/4-1/8 full, I’ve hard a difficult time with sewing because the bobbin doesn’t spin as much. I cant imagine that once you get down to 1/8 of thread, you remove all the thread and re-thread the bobbin… I’ve been using low tension, and I’m thinking upping the tension as I get lower on the bobbin might solve this. I’m not even going to try to bring up the tension knob one needs a flathead screwdriver on directly above the needle/foot on the top of the machine… so, while a noobie, I did already take a 3 piece suit that was way to small for me and make it work adding spandex gussets, tuxedo stripes and the like, so your videos have instructed me to do impress myself so far! 😊

I would like to see a video of your sewing mistakes. When I am teaching my students about the process of sewing. I share my mistakes by saying “ Ask me how I know”? And “We learn from our mistakes “.

Thank you for this! It would help to have you demonstrate on video how you get the right tension for a variety of fabrics. Especially knits and silky light fabrics … the tension on those is intimidating enough not to try them! 😅

Thanks for the explanation on tension. 1. Sometimes get birdnest on underside of fabric . 2. Is it safe to say the the thicker the fabric the looser the tension should be?

I just have a home machine… no serger. What’s the best way to finish an edge if you don’t have a serger?

This is a question for industrial sewing machines. How do you set up a sewing machine to be able to do both heavy denim and light fabrics like dress slacks with having it be too tight for the dress slacks. I've lowered my tension ratio between top and bobbin as low as I can go while keeping it even, yet the fabric will begin to "gather" at the stitches
@RiamiAurum
@RiamiAurum 7 месяцев назад
Thankfully the shop I work at has dedicated machines for denim and dedicated machines for suit/dress alterations. However I would prefer a method to use a machine that is mostly set up for denim to also be able to do other fabrics occasionally

As great as that would be, it just doesn’t really work that way. Industrial machines typically come in light to medium or medium to heavy but light to heavy isn’t really a thing. This has a lot more to do with feed dog depth, overall pressure, and feed differential which is all built into the machine that you purchase. It’s somewhat adjustable but not to the extent that I think you want.

A recurring problem I have is that even though I seem to have the tension just right for my fabric during the majority of the stitch without puckering or looping; the start or end points of my stitch often seem to tie up or pinch in the edge of the fabric. Occasionally the feed dogs pull it under and chew it up. Most often happens on thin lightweight fabric, of course. I suppose these are situations where some kind of stabilizer underneath would be helpful?
@sewshowwithshae
@sewshowwithshae 7 месяцев назад
What I like to do to circumvent this is start the stitching about 1/4 inch in from the edge, then back stitch to the beginning and then continue on from there, then the stitching almost acts like a substitute stabilizer. This is a common problem especially on a heavier powered machine.

I want short digestible explanations like this. I took "one" sewing class and made the mistake of touching the tension dial and got called out on it. no reason, just don't do it.

Got any secrets of what a someone can do to keep their jeans up when a belt as tight as it can go hurts and they still fall down. Due to that disease “No Ass At All” that afflicts a lot of us? Short of suspenders that is. In fact my pain mgmt doctor said a lot of my back problem was coming from my belt being to tight. So it’s back to the Mork and Mindy suspenders unless you can come up with a cure for us. (Solution that works on jeans would be awesome!). Thanks in advance lol.
