I recently took a quick look at the new Bessey GearKlamp. I was impressed with the fit and finish of the clamp. The jaw slides really nicely and the quick release mechanism grips without sliding from where you intended it to grab. The star of the show is the patented gear mechanism to advance the clamping spindle. The handle has a very nice grip that gave me confidence that I could easily apply the advertised 450lbs of clamping force. Would it have been nice to see the jaws made of steel? Yes. But it's a lightweight clamp that lends itself to being used in tricky situations. It's not for panel glue-ups or laminating boards, this is for tricky assemblies and clamping in spaces that would be really difficult otherwise. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

how have these clamps held up over time? have you noticed any wear on the gears or clamping strength?

The Bessey DuoClamp has a squeeze handle and swaps from push to pull at the flip of a switch. Worried about breakage of parts - Bessey don't supply any spare parts, they expect you to buy a new clamp and some of their plastics are not even vaguely UV resistant, the KlikClamp being particularly bad, the lock trigger goes brittle even indoors out of direct sunlight, and no replacements available.

Plastic gears? On a clamp? I dunno about this, but still interested.

Those clamps really look like they would be great to use in my shop. I’m looking forward to your full review. Like others I’m concerned about all those plastic parts.

Since it's about five times the price of my other clamps, does that mean I can charge five times as much for my project? :)

Plastic gears in a high torque application? I don't think so Tim.

Very cool design. However, since those gears and the shafts they ride on are all plastic, they will probably need to be replaced periodically. Maybe they'll come up with a higher end model that's all metal. Is the clamping force comparable to the other "F" style clamp?

up to 450lbs of clamping force.

I want to buy some of these but was put off after watching the video... Plastic gears!!! Whats that about when you are tightening with really strong forces??? Think i'll stick to standard F clamps

I can see those plastic gears stripping out making the clamp useless. Simpler is better in most cases.

I noticed this clamp in Germany, Nürnberg, Holz und Handwerk, They gave me one in my hand and asked for my opinion. I played abt 30 seconds with it and asked: Plastic gear? He said yes and i laught. I said, make it from metal and we see us again.

Why not show an actual application where it would be beneficial to use this clamp.

Sad how everything today is made to only last the warranty period. Everyone i know buys old used tools when possible, and not to save money, but to get quality that dont break.

i bet those gears don't last two seconds in a real work environment. those quick grip clamps made with plastic are notorious failures.

A solution in search of a problem? I’ve always been able to find solutions to tool limitations - it’s part of being a woodworker. Here, they’ve taken a well-established clamp design and needlessly made it more complicated - and as devices get more complex, they are more susceptible to various modes of failure. Interesting concept, but gimmicky, and while there are some very strong plastics, I don’t see them as appropriate in this application.

Thanks For the review I will not be buying these clamps, I agree with the others Plastic is a poor choice of material in a high stress environment.

Might want to ask what kind of plastic is used for the gears and the arms. The same thing, "x is a poor choice of material in a high stress environment", can be said for many metal alloys.

Judging from the price of regular Bessey clamps, I'm afraid to even look up the price. Nice concept though.

Bessey Clamps are all ready overpriced. How much for this clamp? Let me guess. $45 for 6", $69 for 48"
